Compensation[edit]

He demanded several hundred dollars for the sequel after learning the value of money.

How to pronounce?[edit]

How do you pronounce the name?

Click your tongue, followed by the "ow" sound. Impi 14:00, 20 Oct 2004 (UTC)
But *how* to click the tongue? There are many ways to do it.

Pronunciation[edit]

I'm not sure of the specific orthography used for this language, but my guess is that the consonant represented by <N!x> is a postdental nasal click with uvular affricate accompaniment, IPA /ǃ̃qχʼ/. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

What language did he speak?[edit]

Would be helpful in figuring out the real pronunciation of his name (if indeed we can figure out which is his real name).

Anyone else? --Ptcamn 29 June 2005 16:20 (UTC)

Looks like Ju/’hoan language which is also written Ju/'Hoansi. Secretlondon 11:32, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Transcription[edit]

The article says:

The exclamation mark in his name substitutes for the clicking sound in his native tongue, Ungwatsi, that cannot be rendered in the Latin Alphabet.

This is misleading. Anything can "be rendered in the Latin alphabet" (and most languages have been indeed). The mapping from letters to sounds is arbitrary. The exclamation mark is used as a letter (or diacritic, I don't know), but an unused sequence of more traditional letters would have done as well. I'd suggest another wording:

The exclamation mark in his name denotes the clicking sound in his native tongue, Ungwatsi.

(Btw, is there only one click in Ungwatsi?)

Edit: The pronounciation of his name is difficult to put in writing. It is only common with languages in Southern Africa (Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland).

Date of Death[edit]

On imdb the DoD of N!xau is 5th July, 2003. Whereas here it's stated 1st of July. Changed it. migo 21:00, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Plural of rand[edit]

Although in Afrikaans the plural of rand is the same - rand, the official plural in English is rands, even though many Enlish speaking South Africans don't make any distinction. Mike hayes 19:02, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

COPYVIO: Almost the entire Independent article[edit]

Ever looked at the bottom with the link to The Independent article? The whole structure is roughly based on the Independent article. Although many words may have been changed, some things clearly pop into the eye as copied off. Could I be that wrong? -andy 92.229.179.194 (talk) 21:47, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give some examples of the things that "clearly pop into the eye"? rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 22:02, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

looks like it's plagiarised to me too - the portion about only have met three white people, for example. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.180.218.83 (talk) 23:00, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Age Question[edit]

My former high school teacher used to tell me there is no such thing as stupid question, it is stupid to never ask any question on your mind... so here goes: How could [N!???] have died at age 58 if his birth-date is unknown? In other words, why is his age definitively age 58 in the info-box, when it also says that his birth-date is circa 1943. In other, other, words, we do not know whether his date of death precedes or follows his date of birth. We also do not know for certain that he was born in 1943. Unless someone has some verification proving the date of 1943 as definitive for [N!????]'s birth-date, shouldn't this, therefore be changed to "estimated age of death 58." or something similar?

Good question. I checked the source and it says the number is his age that was recorded in official records and even that was only an estimate. Furthermore, the number in the source is 59, not 58. I updated hte article to reflect this. rʨanaɢ (talk) 04:51, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Birthdate & year[edit]

Coat-tailing on the previous section, the birth date of N!xau is ambiguous, yet IMDb reflects an exact (16 December 1944) (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0618452/). Is there a source that can be derived from IMDb, or will this remain questionable?
