Benefits[edit]

Can someone please add a benefits section, along with diseases that can (possibly) be prevented by braces?

Missing teeth[edit]

Please answer the querry

can you guy tell me that if there is one tooth missing, then, can it be adjusted within the teeth, or shall we have to put a tooth cap on missing tooth. Which one is suitable and practical?

On the cheap .. pulling teeth[edit]

There should be a mention of the short cut most dentists take when on the cheap - pulling teeth and pulling back the front teeth and forcing the lower jaw to the rear. It give the person a forever teenage chin and damages the jaw. It creates a tendon complication called ??. You have to look for dentists that will not do this.

Removing teeth and then pulling front teeth back doesn't sound cheap or easy. --Hanina

Just curious - shouldn't this be labelled under 'orthodontic brace'? Once one moves into having braces, it's under the heading of orthodontia, and no longer dentistry.

It's about teeth,so it is "dental braces".Ahem...can you sign with four tildes?203.124.2.14 12:39, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image[edit]

I changed the main picture on the page to one that is more informative and a lot less disgusting. It illustrates the application and form of braces much better than the original and isn't quite as disturbing. Waqcku 19:35, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ceramic Braces[edit]

Is it really necessary to include the picture of a man with ceramic braces? I don't find it helpful. A picture with someone with metal braces might be. thanks so much-it looks a lot better!-Qua Qua

Emma Watson?[edit]

She's not an adult... 130.253.5.159 00:12, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

those pictures of that person's teeth are pretty intense:-4.36.45.2 13:07, 6 April 2006 (UTC)Emily[reply]

reorganize this topic[edit]

Brackets are just a tool in orthodontic therapy. In this article there is a lot of confusion, it seems that braces and orthodontic therapy are the same thing. For example: "Typical cost of braces in the United States is about 5,000 USD".I think the whole topic should be reorganized and many parts discussed in other topics.

This is ambiguous, what is the differnence between dental arch and dental palate?[edit]

In the main article it says: "An expander can still be used on an adult without surgery, but to expand the dental arch, and not the palate." The drawings in dental arch and palate show the almost the same thing.

fetishes[edit]

There used to be a reference in the braces in popular culture section to braces being a fetish for some people. However, this reference, as well as the separate article on fetishes (as well as it being listed in types of fetishes) has been removed. Why?

Find a different picture[edit]

Can we please use a different picture? I'm sure there are plenty of other pictures that properly illustrate braces without being so, erm, confronting. We don't want to be scaring away young, potential braces candidates here. --Candy-Panda 06:36, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

azeri...[edit]

The Azeri Orthodontic Society? Is that relevant? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.68.70.25 (talk) 02:56, August 20, 2007 (UTC)

Temperature-sensitive materials[edit]

Hi. I'm no expert, but wile reviewing revent edits, I came across this change made on 18 April. Part of the change removed some interesting material regarding temperature-sensitive materials. The following is an excerpt of the removed/reworked content.

Modern orthodontics makes frequent use of nickel-titanium archwires and temperature-sensitive materials. When cold, the archwire is limp and flexible, easily threaded between brackets of any configuration. Once heated to body temperature, the archwire will stiffen and seek to retain its shape, creating constant light force on the teeth.

If this is accurate, could someone with more expertise than I integrate it back into the article? Thanks. -- 02:11, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Ref style[edit]

I've done a purely mechanical conversion of some external links into footnotes. I was unable to proceed with [1] and [2] due to an error and a langauge barrier, respectivly. - brenneman 06:55, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganize and reconsider this page[edit]

I am an orthodontist and following the development of this page is difficult to understand if it can be of any use for anyone. For sure is not useful for any orthodontist. Should we leave this page to laypeople and start something else? By the way, the term braces is not used in scientific literature, where you can rather read "orthodontic appliance". Orthodontic appliance is such a broad term that includes 50% of orthodontic knowledge...We can't put so many informations in this article. I would ask the opinion of an expert wikipedian (not necessarily orthodontist). If there is any orthodontist around please contact me. --Giorgio Fiorelli (talk) 10:34, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is a somewhat more technical article called Orthodontics. —Hanina (talk) 04:16, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This article refers to the device as "braces" because of the guideline Use common names. In general, the intended audience for an article is dependent on the scope of interest of the topic. In this case, a general audience would be interested in braces, so it's worthwhile to give a "low-tech" overview to begin with. If there is content of a more technical nature, it may be appropriate to provide such content in subsections positioned towards the end of the article, or possibly to create more specific sub-articles covering specific topics in greater detail, as per WP:SPINOUT. Personally, as a curious lay-person, I agree, I would like to see quite a bit more technical content in this, or other orthodontic articles. This article has quite a bit of room to expand and improve. Unfortunately, short of a university medical library, I've found it fairly difficult to find content that can be added to this article where I can provide a verifiable source. If anyone can provide me with facts and associated sources that they feel belong in this article, I'd be happy to help integrate them into Wikipedia. -Verdatum (talk) 16:13, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Pricing[edit]

Under the section "Treatment time and cost" it lists various costs in several different countries. Are these prices all in USD, or what? Please elaborate on what currency it's in. Thanks 124.169.120.199 (talk) 09:25, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The pricing should be converted to an English currency such as pounds or dollars, as this is an English wikipedia. Crzyclarks (talk) 17:57, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pain[edit]

You will not experience much pain on the day that you get your braces, but you will experience pain the day after and for a few days —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.168.122.86 (talk) 18:51, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yucky picture[edit]

Can someone change the 2nd picture? Stop putting disgusting pictures up!! 173.87.21.138 (talk) 21:00, 16 January 2010 (UTC) you're a wimp! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.5.162.68 (talk) 14:38, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the second image that you referred to used to be the lead photo. I found the current lead photo on Flickr and swapped it in because it looked more conventional than what appears to be a highly specific technique in the latter photo. However, the photo is not "yucky" or "disgusting" at all, unless teeth creep you out. SchuminWeb (Talk) 01:37, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Procedure[edit]

The last line in the procedure article says: To do the gradual work required, braces apply no more than ______ (buccal) ______ (distal) newton meters of force to a tooth by whichever leverage in use.

Newton meters is not a measure of force, but torque!

I bet this is not the the right place the discuss this...I'm a noob :-)

Flossing[edit]

The article recommends that wearers of braces exercise good dental hygiene by, among other things, flossing. How can you possibly floss with those things in place ? Anyone care to elaborate ? Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.113.104.58 (talk) 03:46, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One must carefully thread the floss between the wire and the tooth, much like threading a sewing needle, just at a much larger scale. There are other methods too, such as buying specialized floss for braces. They often are just like normal floss, except come in packages and are not very long, but at the end of each strip of floss is a fairly long plastic covering, making it easy to get through between the wire, and thus quickly allowing you to floss. Why do people need them?[edit]

Why do so many people need braces? Why don't teeth just grow right naturally? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.139.86.185 (talk) 04:03, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Imperfection is a hallmark of the human condition, attributable to evolution by natural selection and lack of any coherent design. Useless features such as vestigiality would be most absent from the work of any competent engineer. Perfect beings would have no need of antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensive drugs, analgesics, defibrillators, angioplasty, and the thousands of other substances, procedures, and devices common in modern medicine. Nor would physicians be required, since the body would be self-healing for any repairable injury. Perhaps a majority of the world's citizens would consider this view sacrilegious and in conflict with the Torah/Talmud/Bible/Koran/... Science cares not a whit one way or the other, and does not encroach upon the sphere of religion by attempting to reconcile its theories with the world's faiths, or make arguments for the non-existence of spiritual entities and effects. Claims which cannot be established or refuted by recourse to evidence comprehensible to the physiological senses are non-scientific. So it would be a great mistake to view evolution as some sort of sugercoated atheism, impinging upon Biblical accounts of creation, since the theory of evolution makes no attempts to construe language in the Bible, counterpose the theory to any of the multitudinous Biblical interpretations, or assert the absence of supernatural phenomena. Care must be taken not to equate "not proven and not provable within any scientific framework" with "shown to be false". 75.94.128.56 (talk) 05:19, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

– Braces should be moved because they are closer to orthodontics than dentistry. Orthodontic archwires and elastics should be moved because Wikipedia titles are always in singular unless it is always used in the plural. Orthodontic spacer should be moved to either Spacer (orthodontics) or Seperator (orthodontics). All titles are consistent with titles such as Retainer (orthodontics) 2601:183:101:58D0:1C3A:BD3D:FF6F:62 (talk) 21:27, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support moves from plural to singular per WP:PLURAL. Agnostic on the dental/orthodontics issue, but prefer natural disambiguators per WP:NATURAL. —  AjaxSmack  02:43, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose proposed move. Dental braces are not dental because of an association with dentistry, but because of an association with teeth. bd2412 T 10:22, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
