Amsterdam, The Netherlands – Exactly 25 years ago tomorrow, on August 17, 1982, Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG, AEX:PHI) manufactured the world’s first Compact Disc at a Philips factory in Langenhagen, just outside of Hanover, Germany.


The Philips factory in Germany, where the world’s first CD was pressed, belonged to Polygram – the recording company, which Philips owned at the time. The first CD to be manufactured at the plant was “The Visitors” by ABBA. By the time CDs were introduced on the market in November 1982, a catalogue of around 150 titles – mainly classical music – had been produced. The first CDs and CD players – including Philips’ CD100 – were introduced in Japan in November, followed by a US and European market introduction in March of 1983.

In August 1982 the real pressing was ready to begin in the new factory, not far from the place where Emil Berliner had produced his first gramophone record 93 years earlier. By now, Deutsche Grammophon, Berliner's company and the publisher of the Strauss recording, had become a part of PolyGram. The first CD to be manufactured at the new factory was The Visitors (1981) by ABBA On Auguest 17, 1982 in West Germany.[10] The first album to be released on CD was Billy Joel's 52nd Street, that reached the market alongside Sony's CD player CDP-101 on October 1, 1982 in Japan. This is a myth. 52nd Street was not the first commercially available CD; it was one of a batch of 50 titles simultaneously released on October 1, 1982 in Japan. It just happened to have the lowest catalog number -- 35DP 1 -- among the pop releases. —Torc. (Talk.) 04:57, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The "first CD" myth strikes again. 52nd Street was one of the first 50 CDs commercially released, not theeee first, regardless of how often that fact is falsely reported. Here's a list of the first 50 commercial titles, all of which were released on October 1, 1982. I would love to see this get killed forever, but it's probably going to get re-added every few months.
