A Request[edit]

Over at Culture of the United Kingdom one of the main things that is stopping us from putting it forward as a featured article candidate is the fact that the art section is so small (one small paragraph). Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. At the same time, I'm working on Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so that I get some variety (not much variety, but enough to keep me going). I happened to do the Southam article because I wrote about Stratford-upon-Avon, then did the district that town is in, and then found some other places in the district. Actually, just before I translated the Southam article I wrote an article on no:Napton-on-the-Hill, pop. 976. I'll write an article on a village with three rather mangy cows, a dachshund named Colin and a small hen in its late forties if I come across it and it fills in a red link. Likewise, thank you for translating the article about my home town Aylsham, which I originated a couple of years ago. It's good to know that the people of Norway will have the opportunity of reading about this lovely town in the middle of North Norfolk. Glad to see it's appreciated. Writing about towns and villages in the UK is one of the more interesting things I do on Wikipedia. While much of it is just translation work, I do occasionally put a little extra effort into it, and a few articles are longer and, I dare say, better than the English ones. My brother lives in England, so when I visit him I try to see as many of the places that I've written about as possible. He lives in Milton Keynes, so Norfolk is just within range for a day trip, and I'm actually hoping to go there next summer. Cnyborg 22:37, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You might have flown over Son, as one of the routes into Oslo Lufthavn is right over here. It's about 50 km south of Oslo, by the Oslo Fjord. Republics[edit]

Need your help and/or advice. The British Wikipedian Republican Party sought fit to delete Wikinfo:Classical definition of republic from Wikipedia. There is a terrible brouhaha at Talk:Republic. They won't even allow an external link! SimonP really doesn't know what he is doing. They deleted the Classical definition of republic and created mixed government and politeia instead. The official title of mixed government is a Republic and the Romans translated "politiea" as Republic. And then to top it off the new article Classical republicanism doesn't refer to the Classical republics of Crete, Sparta, Solonic Athens, or Rome but to Machiavelli's ideology. How can that be when Venice in the 13th century instituted a mixed government and called herself a "Republic".

With Jwrosenwieg and Kim Bruning there was a tacit agreement a year ago to have republic be the modern meaning and a [Classical definition of republic] to describe the ancient republics of Hellas and Rome and their influence. To say the least the "Republic section" is all messed up. We need some clarification. I have new information but User:Snowspinner won't let me bring this back up for undelete. (I do grant that a little bit of the Classical definition is original but the rest is not.) I will not let Sparta be called anything but a republic! I will not let the British wikipedian modern republicans strip Sparta, (my heritage and roots) of her rightful name. She is a Classical republic and needs to be called such! At the least, where is the damage in having an external link?WHEELER 15:31, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I'd like to join those above in thanking you for all the great translation work you're doing. I often find myself looking at an article on a small British town with a little Norsk link at the side, and sure enough the Norwegian article is yours. I also know Southam and Napton and it is good to know they are of interest beyond these shores. I spent ages creating stubs on about 400 villages in County Durham so I share your view that "every little place matters". I look forward to the day when there's an article on every town and village in the world, all with a whole string of interwiki links! I find working on villages and towns in Britain and Ireland very rewarding, it's I can keep working on a single subject, and at the same time find great variety, from prehistorical Britain to modern features such as the Londo Underground - whenever I get bored with one thing I can just follow another link and add another article on the geography or history of the islands. Henrietta Wozniak[edit]

At 1625, it states that Henrietta Wozniak married Charles I of England on 13 June that year. Since he married Henrietta Maria of France that day, and a search turned up a few other instances of that name being used for her, I made a redirect. Cnyborg 11:19, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to be a hoax. The "Wozniak" was inserted on 12:59, 13 June 2006 by Yv5erp, who has edited Wikipedia three times, each of them vandalism. Henrietta Maria of France was not known as Henrietta Wozniak; and my Google search finds such "gems" as her being "ancestor of the great Steve Wozniak" and Wikipedia mirror sites. I'm going to correct the mistaken article at 1625 and delete the misleading redirect. If you find some actually reliable source in which she bears that name, it can be reinstated (but there are no such sources). - Nunh-huh 18:58, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I fell for it. I've searched again, and the serious sources that I can find all seem to have copied the information from enwiki (it's been there so long that quite a lot of sites have copied it) Thanks for cleaning up the mess; the bright side it that at least an old piece of vandalism was discovered.
