This is probably the weirdest software bug I've seen on Wikipedia, and that's saying something. :)

I was going over this article preparing to delete it because it was listed on VfD over a week. I see in the history that it purports to have been created by IP# 209.98.3.203, which is impossible. That is my IP address, it is static and I have had it continuously for over a year (longer than I've been on Wikipedia). And I did not create the article.

However, about the same time as the articles creation, I was working on fixing up another article, Hippeastrum, which originally contained (I think) the exact same text as this one. (Except for the title, and I didn't create the title either, I'd previously never even heard the term "belladonna lily.")

Is this related to the "edit conflict" problems I've seen mentioned in passing?

Might it not be related to the way "Moving" is implemented (it's sort of misnamed if I understand it): When someone "moves" Hippeastrum -> Belladonna lily, what actually happens is the old page (which you created) is renamed Belladonna lily, and a new page called "Hippeastrum" is created with a redirect on it. So you wind up "credited" with creating a page whose name you've never heard of... -- Someone else 17:42, 31 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Aha. So if someone moved "Hippeastrum" to "Belladonna lily" while I was editing "Hippeastrum," that would do it? Makes a little more sense now I guess. - Hephaestos 17:47, 31 Jul 2003 (UTC)
That's my guess. I'm often amazed at the (new) titles on articles, discovering I've edited them only by checking the history<G>. -- Someone else 17:49, 31 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Although that really doesn't explain the fourth edit to belladonna lily, which is also credited to my IP, and which I didn't make either. Hmm. - Hephaestos 18:02, 31 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Might it not have been moved after your last edit? Then you would only have seen the original name, and yet the page you edited would now be named "Belladonna lily"? -- Someone else 18:05, 31 Jul 2003 (UTC)
