These templates are to be used in station listings when showing what services operate on a specific line or stop at specific stations. They are also used in the station tables that describe each line and each service. That way, if a service moves, only these templates need to be updated to fix all intersecting lines.
Skip-stop operation on parts of the J/Z complicates matters; there the templates refer to the service labels.
NYCS service templates[edit]
Basic usage[edit]
Each NYCS service template implements the template {{NYCS time 2}}. You may call a service template in the following ways, depending on if and how the parameter time is called.

The exclude parameter[edit]
Many of the templates accept an "exclude" parameter. For instance, {{NYCS Eighth center}} would normally display as A, B, C, and D. But in the article about the A service, one does not want to portray the A service as "transferring to itself." Therefore, in the "Subway transfers" column, {{NYCS Eighth center|exclude=A}} is invoked. This displays as B, C, and D.
The "exclude" parameter has not been added to every template, but only where it is necessary to permit the contents of the "Subway transfers" column to display correctly in the service articles.
Day/night variants[edit]
Some of the templates have day/night variants. For instance: {{NYCS Broadway night}} displays as N and Q. The regular version, {{NYCS Broadway}} displays as N, Q, R, and W. This is because the R service does not operate on Broadway during late nights.
The day/night variants are used only in the service articles, in the following situations:
- If a service stops at a station only during the day, then the "Subway Transfers" column needs to exclude transfers that are available only at night
- If a service stops at a station only during late nights, then the "Subway Transfers" column needs to exclude services that operate only during the day
The day/night templates exist, in other words, for line segments where a late-night-only service has an intersection with a line that has a daytime-only service.
These templates have been created only in the specific cases where at least one article requires them, not in all cases where a day/night exception could theoretically exist. New templates would need to be created if the MTA creates new daytime/nighttime service exceptions.

The {{NYCS trains}} template is designed for calling one of service templates listed here and adding the word train or trains in the correct number. See the template's documentation for details.
