Hello. Brieftly, I answer your cuestions (english is not my maternal language). I don't separate ethnicity and culture. Ethnicity is based on the race and other elements, of course, but on culture, too.
On the other side, I don't say Filipinos are Hispanics. I say that a filipino can be considered asiatic, austronesian or hispanic, etc. It's his election if he has arguments to support it.

So now I know that you are not Laloy which is good because he kept on vandalizing the articles which I was furious. Gimferr, the thing is, Culturally, Filipino is Filipino which is a unique blend of Negrito, Malay, Spanish, American, Chinese, Japanese and Islam. Filipino is not Hispanic but Filipino. There is a difference. Filipino is defenitely influenced strongly by Spain but not 100%. We may say it could be Hispanic, but I personally do not agree. It is just simply, Filipino. Ethnically, Filipinos are not Spanish. That is an unfortunate myth among some Filipinos. We were not slaughtered by the Spanish and intermarriage was rare. Actually, more Chinese intermarried with the Native Malays. It just angers me how some people are so delusional. Just look at your face and you can tell what race you are. That's all.

Hispanic is a very ample label (even ambiguous). The Hispanic term is applied to populations in the Americas that are mainly Native Americans (Peru or Bolivia), Spanish-Italian (Argentina) or Afro-American (Dominican Republic). I think it is possible to be Hispanic and simultaneously negrito, malay and Chinese. It is not a racial question exclusively. It is an historical or cultural question, too. It's only opinion, perhaps :)

Anyways, my opinion is that in order to be Hispanic, the people should be using Spanish in daily life as well. All of Latin American countries use Spanish as official language. Philippines, they do not. They officially abolished the language. Chavacano is going extinct (a creole language of Spanish and Malay language) which is unfortunate. Philippines is definitely leaning towards being Asian. Just think, many Filipinos have Chinese, Japanese and Native Malay last names as well. Virtually no one speaks Spanish in the Philippines.
It's like a same concept of Indonesian having Arabic name but they are not Arabs. They are Indonesian. Culturally, Indonesians are strongly influenced by Arabs but Indonesians are Indonesian. They also have significant Dutch, Chinese, Japanese and Papuan minorities. They have Islam, Christians, Buddhist and Hindu religion. I'm pretty sure you will agree that Indonesians are not Arabic right?

Philippines was colonized for 300 years by the Spanish, 50 years by the Americans. Philippines is in between China, Formosa (Taiwan) and Japan in north Vietnam in the west, Palau/Micornesia in East and Indonesia/Malaysia/Papua New Guinea in South.
Philippines is the unique blend of these culture. Filipino is not Spanish. It is just "Filipino".

I am agree with you: Indonesians are not Arabs, Filipinos are Filipinos and Filipinos are not Spanish. However, I am talking about Hispanics, not Spaniards. Guatemalans or the Cubans are Hispanics, not Spaniards. I believe that you could be right when you say the people should be using Spanish in daily life in order to be Hispanic, but this always does not happen in the U.S.A.
The question is the identification with a greater unit, out the Philippines. You recognize that greater unit, when you affirm that Philippines is definitely leaning towards being Asian. We can say that Philippine and Indonesia are asians, but this label is only geographic. In addition, it is necessary to specify more, since Asia include countries like Israel, Irak, great part of Russia, China, India, ...
Indonesia (at least, most of its population) could be included in a greater unit, not only geographic: Islam. We would speak about civilization, not only race or nation. Other organizations do not make reference to the religion or civilization, but to the colonial past, as the Comonwealth.

Sorry Gimferr, I just can't say that Filipinos are Hispanic. That is like a big slap to the other Filipinos as well. Muslim Filipinos, Chinese Filipinos, Japanese Filipinos, Negritos and the Malay tribal people.
I know many Pinoys without the Spanish surnames. They are not hispanic. If the Philippines is going to beconsidered as Hispanic, then might as well say that the Filipinos are Americans as well.
The term Asian is vague (I do agree with you). But I'm pretty sure you understood that I was not saying Filipinos are same as Iranians etc. I guess we can say that Filipinos are South Eastern Asian.
I sure don't consider myself as Hispanic. I have no Spanish culture period. Filipino is Filipino.
