Hello Misternuvistor,
First of all, welcome. It's nice to see an addition to the few Wikipedia editors interested in professional video. I'm here because I noticed you added a link to M-II to Panasonic MII - but the two articles are duplicates and should be merged, not cross-linked. Your article (M-II) is more comprehensive, and there are few things that are in Panasonic MII and not in M-II. However, I am pretty (though not perfectly) sure the format's official name is MII - the logo, for one, has no hyphen. Articles should nearly always always be under the official names of things, disambiguated if necessary, with common variants redirecting there, so it would be best to merge both into MII (video tape). I thought I'd ask your opinion before I do a merge&redirect. What do you think? -- grm_wnr Esc 12:11, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
Oh, I think I have a few things to add - of course, the most GFDL-compatible way of doing this would be to move M-II to MII (video tape), and merge in Panasonic MII afterwards. Also, I noticed that the images you added (Image:Logo_mii.gif and Image:Mii_cassette.jpg) are noted with "courtesy of...", and have no copyright tag. This is dangerous, since they might be tagged as Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images and deleted. The logo is probably okay under fair use and should be tagged with {{logo}}, but I'm not so sure about the photograph. If by "courtesy" you mean you took it off their web page without asking for permission, that is most probably a copyright violation (since that webpage does not have a copyright disclaimer I was able to find, we must assume everything on there is copyrighted). If you mean that you asked for permission, you have to state what they told you - images with certain restrictions on usage, i.e. Wikipedia use only, non-commercial use only, etc., were recently declared deprecated, and are also eligible for speedy deletion. I don't want to heap a lot of legalese on you, but let's just say that the copyright situation on Wikipedia is a very important one and the bulk of the community does not take such issues lightly. If you add images which are not clearly tagged (repeatedly, at least), you are headed for many, many heated discussions. -- grm_wnr Esc 12:33, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
- Got your message. About the merge: Sure, go ahead. About the images: Copyright templates go on the image's decription page, not the articles themselves. The description page is linked inline images in articles, which makes it easier to reuse images on multiple articles. You can edit image pages like any other page. I've already done this in the case of Image:Logo_mii.gif, you can click on that to see how it's done. Cheers and happy editing! - As to the 2" Quad links - i created them all, might as well have them point to the correct page and not the redirect. Seems cleaner to me. I lived on what used to be the edge of Bismark - Kennedy Ave near Divide and 23rd - in one of the dome houses. I drove through a few years ago, lots of new houses in what used to be fields. XDR logo[edit]
Hi, I redrew the XDR logo you uploaded and saved it as PNG (Image:Xdr_logo.jpg ⇒ Image:XDR logo.png) – it is now much smaller in filesize, cleaner and has a higher resolution. Therefore I also listed the original for deletion. Hope this is OK. Mysid (talk) 13:01, 21 September 2005 (UTC)
Re: EBS Slide[edit]
Thanks for your message; sorry it took me so long to get back to you. The image of the slide came from an old videotape I made of a blizzard warning announcement back in 1993; the station was WPMT in York, PA. They (and other local stations) had been using it since I was a kid back in the '70s (as a small child, I used to find it a bit frightening). I have been trying to find out more information about the logo, to no avail. I contacted the FCC through their EAS page, and they seemed to have no knowledge of this logo. I was trying to find out what the original colors were (as you can see, the slide was seriously faded; I wanted to clean up the scratches and dirt in Photoshop and restore it to its original appearance). I also contacted WPMT, but they have given me no response at all. Here is a larger version of the slide...

"DBS"[edit]
Why are you using this term on Big ugly dish? In this context, its not accurate - there are C and even Ka-band DBS services, but only the Ku-band ones have smaller dishes. DBS as a term for high-powered digitally modulated satellite systems is inaccurate, as the only official meaning of DBS is the 1977 ITU frequency allocation plan, everything else is a misnomer. --Kiand 08:43, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- FSS is only used as a term in the US, though. And all "DBS" services in Europe use linear polarisation - I've been getting Sky since 1989 on linear-polarised Ku-band (and X band, 10.7+Ghz) satellites, and before that Eutelsat 2F1 at 13E, linear-polarised Ku-band. Indeed, the only time I've used a circular polarised LNB since the dead of British Satellite Broadcasting was a slightly insane stunt involving a 3.1M satellite dish and getting a DirecTV testcard in Ireland...
- The problem with the FSS/DBS terminology is that they refer solely to the situation in the United States. There is the rest of the world to consider, namely Europe (where satellite TV is often the main multi-channel reception format, e.g. Germany), and Australia/Asia where the European situation is often repeated - e.g. high power, linear polarised, X/Ku-band satellite transmissions in DVB.
- Outside of the US, DBS is used to refer to pay-tv systems (which are in some countries, again Germany, rare to the point of being extreme minority systems - 3 versus 25 million viewers). The terms FSS and TVRO are never used. Indeed, outside of the Wikipedia, the only place I see "TVRO", "BUD" and "FSS" being used are the North American letters page of Tele-Satellite!
- As goes TWTA of the satellites, the US is the only market I've ever seen a distinction being made in terminology, other than possibly refering to low power ones as "feed satellites". And the feed birds I regularly take a look at are high power (albeit usually end-of-life and hence inclined orbit and needing a stepper motor) linear Ku-band satellites.

- It was EchoStar 1 at 61.5W - I can't see 72.5W even from the furthest west in the country, unfortunately. I've probably been using european-centric terms a lot, so no problems there :).
- The linear polarisation is probably a legacy hang over, yes - Europe has had heavy use of DTH ever since the east broke up - people didn't want to see the one, state-run propaganda machine channel any more, and the cheapest way to get stuff up quick was onto Eutelsat 2F1, Astra 1A or Kopernikus 2 - all high power, linear polarised satellites. As capacity demand kept growing, craft kept getting added - all those three positions are still in use, and they wouldn't break legacy support for old installations, some going back to 1988-1990 timescale. --Kiand 13:39, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Backup to VHS[edit]
Hi,
I noticed your comment on the MiniDV talk page about the systems that backed up a PC drive to VHS tape. I remembered the ads and wanted to ask you to write the articles on those systems if you know anything about them. That sort of esoteric niche product ought to be documented on Wikipedia. (And I would far rather write my backups to a tape medium that's at least a digital tape medium. :0)

Nuvistors and the Dairy Equipment Company[edit]
Hah! I thought I was the only one old enough to remember what a nuvistor was.
Do you have a source for Digital's acronym being abandoned because it was the same as that of the Dairy Equipment Company of Madison, Wisconsin, now DEC International?
I had heard this too, and put it into the article some time ago. It was removed 08:48, 10 September 2005 by 68.109.114.240 with the comment (Removed nonsense about Dairy Equipment Corp trademark issue. As a long time employee I know that never happened.) Since then, I've tried to find a source, but have been unable to. Obviously my memory is not perfectly reliable, since I also thought it was Alan Kotok who told that to me, and I emailed him--we haven't been in touch since the 1960s when we were only the vaguest of acquaintences--and he couldn't remember anything about it.
I'd love to have this pinned down.
Long-time DEC employees' memories aren't necessarilly perfect, either, as I've had them insist, vehemently, that DEC was never used officially by DEC itself. Fortunately I have the old manuals to prove it that DEC did. Dpbsmith (talk) 13:29, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- I've been looking into this issue, too. Finding this note helped a bit -- I hadn't found anything before to indicate that the Dairy Equipment Co. had changed its name to DEC International. Unfortunately, there are too many companies out there called DEC International -- so far I've found a prospecting firm in Georgia, a flexible HVAC ducting company in the Netherlands, and a company in New Zealand that does God-only-knows-what, but no dairy equipment.
I did find a better-formatted (and more up-to-date) version of the Bou-Matic history found in the careerbuilder.com link above. But since Bou-Matic is no longer part of DEC International, they didn't include a link to it, darn them... -- CWesling 01:00, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
- "DEC" was certainly used the official logo at the beginning. One of these days I'll get around to posting pictures of my "Laboratory Modules" (the first products DEC ever built/sold); these plainly show the logo. And the shrubs in front of the entrance to MK[O][1], the Merrimack, New Hampshire facility were trimmed into the letters "D", "E", "C", well into the 80's.

I just self-nominated myself for administrator's status on Wikipedia. As an active member of WikiProject North Dakota, I feel that having admin status would allow me the ability to be more useful to the project and to curtail vandalism and other problems. An admin is able to protect pages that are being bombarded with vandalism and to more quickly revert pages that have been vandalized. I've always hoped that we could get an admin to join the WikiProject so we would have someone to turn to in times of need. Since we still don't have an active admin within the project's membership, I decided to nominate myself. I really hope you will visit my request for adminship and support me. Kodak picture[edit]
It has been undeleted. Sorry about that, sometimes it can get really messy when an image copyright tag has to go. The tag says that "images uploaded before May 19, 2005 will be considered for deletion." Is there any place where this has been discussed? News The Grand Forks article is a great example to follow when working on other city articles, particularly those about North Dakota cities. We would be very well off if our other major city articles were similar to the Grand Forks article. Keep the Grand Forks article bookmarked and refer to its structure and style when you work on similar articles. ---New assessment parameter--- The importance of each article is gauged as either Top, High, Mid, or Low. Since "importance" is a rather subjective term, some WPND members are trying to come up with a general set of guidelines. There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.
