Plural

The plurals in "adopting their patronyms as family names" were dropped. Does it mean all Tamils share one patronym or some sort of collective system? --Menchi 19:10, Aug 10, 2003 (UTC)

Cast surnames

Could we have some example caste-derived surnames, and some subcaste-derived ones? It'd be helpful to also point out the differences between caste- and subcaste-derived surnames, if there's any. --Menchi 19:30, Aug 10, 2003 (UTC)

Hindu only?

I don't mean to offend, but this article covers only Hindu names, or caste-based family names--there are enough Muslims with Gandhi and Raja in their name to make this issue be not only about Hindus as a religious community. Or am I confused?—iFaqeer (Talk to me!) 00:17, Mar 19, 2005 (UTC)

Merge with Indian name

All the names by category culture category articles have the format {region name[s]} and none specifically mention 'family' in them specifically. To retain that consistency, it might be worth considering merging this into Indian name rather than vice versa. Shyamal 11:58, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

Fair point. I had a look around and didn't see a concensus - but I didn't check the categories. I suggested merging Indian name into this one because it has less information so that's an easier merge. But we can always move the merged article to Indian name if that makes more sense. Creating Indian names

I plan to create a new page with the title Indian names and merge the contents from Indian name and Indian family name into the new page, and when the page is eveolved, we can keep redirects at the Indian family name and Indian name pages. Doctor Bruno 07:52, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
