What worries?[edit]

Just saw your new face. ANything you want to share?? Filiocht 08:37, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the concern. Too much reading WikiEN mailing list again, and paying attention to some of the nonsense that goes on between other people at Wikipedia. I'll try just ignore the wider Wikipedia picture again. I really do enjoy editing the Irish topics, and I enjoy facts and Wikipedia content generally. zoney talk 16:57, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Glad to here it. It never ceases to amaze me how much time people are willing to put into the trivial aspects of the project while ignoring the 'facts' aspect. Filiocht 10:33, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)

Lough Derg photo[edit]

I was lucky the day presented itself for photography - we had a rare bit of sunshine. It was taken from a lookout point between Nenagh and Killaloe. Not really near anywhere in particular. One of the islands is Holy Island and I suppose it is looking towards Clare, in the general direction of Scariff. I wouldn't really know what to caption it

You're not by any chance a photoshopping photo editing type? Because I took four in a row horizontally (with the camera in my hands), that being one of them. I thought mebbe they could be stitched together. I have nothing but appleworks which doesn't lend itself to photo editing, but the four could make a nice wide photo of the lake. If you could (and wanted to) do it feel free to get the others off me.

Cathaoireacha is not a formal Irish signoff, just what happened when an Irish guy heard some posh English saying "Chairs, old fellow!" and translated it as he saw fit. Will I email you the photos (they are mebbe 1.5 megs each)? JOHN COLLISON (An Liúdramán) 16:48, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC
Emailing is fine by me, I have broadband or T1 connection to the net. If it's easier for you to upload them to Commons or some other location online, that's fine too. The large images are all the better for photoshopping. zoney talk 17:01, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Irish National Flag Vs. Irish Coat of Arms[edit]

Hey Zoney, Fergananim here. Can you by any chance tell me exactly what is the difference between our national flag and coat of arms? If not, just direct me to someone who can. Cheers.

I'm not sure I understand your query. At the top of the infobox on Republic of Ireland are shown both the Flag of Ireland and the coat of arms (the latter being a blue shield with harp). If you mean in what circumstances is the coat of arms used (as opposed to just the tricolour), I suggest the page Coat of arms.

Declan etc.[edit]

Thanks for the note. I plan to do a more extensive Saint Declan page some other day. I'll check out the Irish Wikepedia's site soon. Eoghanacht 19:36, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

There should be a warning about the warning...[edit]

Zoney, I want to thank you an intentional, but overshot, moment of entertainment. Start with your signature line (below your name) found on the email discussion list. It represents an amusing transposition of a cliche movie concept to a text format. Next add my lack of adequate time to read the email discussion list and subsequent decision to grok the contents of the email folder without having to read all the emails.

The result is me at my desk working on a design document while listening to an audible translation (TextAloud) of the entire email discussion list. (Using the UK female voice that I prefer)

Many emails pass to a post by Zoney followed by split second where I wonder "should I throw off my headphones and duck under the desk?" as I hear an English female voice ("M"? Moneypenny?) warning me, in an earily familiar voice, "this message will self-destruct in 5 seconds..."

That's hilarious! I can imagine that being rather unexpected on the first occasion! zoney talk 21:56, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Question on "Passport free zone"[edit]

Hi Zoney, I wonder if you could help me answer a question on the "Passport free zone" that is supposed to exist between the UK and Ireland. I've been trying to find out when it officially began, under what treaty, and what it 'officially' is. This is both for the Schengen treaty article, and for personal curiousity, and for a possible article in itself (perhaps comparing it to Schengen and the Nordic Passport Union?). If you look at Talk:Schengen treaty, I've found a few quotes which suggest there was some act or treaty in the 1950 which officially brought it into force. I suspect this might simply be a reestablisment of the pre-war rules, many of which were suspended during the emergency. (My Granny tells me that during the war official permission was needed to exit Eire, permission could be given by a lawyer, politician... or a priest!) I also found this interesting thing [1]

Don't Irish citizens have a right of abode in the UK?
No. Only British citizens (and some British subjects and Commonwealth citizens who had the right of abode before 1983) have an unqualified right to live in the UK.
In practice, the entry of Irish citizens to the UK is not restricted, but the UK government still has the power to deport an Irish citizen on exceptional grounds. Or it could introduce immigration controls on Irish citizens, although these days such controls could not go beyond the limited controls applied to other EEA (the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) citizens.

I'd love to get your help on this if your interested.

Cheers mate[edit]

Thanks for the kind words. I probably will be gone permanently, though I might make an occasional edit or comment on various things. All the best mate, and continue with your great work in making Wikipedia an amazing place! - Ta bu shi da yu 02:07, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Beannachtai na Feile Padraig[edit]

Hi Zoney,
A bit early, but I thought you might be otherwise occupied tomorrow!
I myself will as usual be coming to the office in my full regalia - Murphy family tartan and Kilkenny jacket for the occasion. --JohnArmagh 07:49, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Cantos[edit]

Hi and thanks for the message. My finest hour because of the responses I got on the FAC, but also because I actually know, without any feedback, that the article is the best on the subject on the Internet (in the sense of the best general intro to the work for the interested non-expert). I like the new big article edit screen wording very much; well done. I'm currently working on List of cultural references in The Cantos, which is a place for all the research that didn't make it into the main article. After that, I'm thinking about Ezra Pound, which is a mess, and a couple of other Irish writers (Sean O'Casey needs work, as does Padraic Colum). I'm definitely taking it easier, though. I'm away for a long weekend, starting today, and putting more effort into my own writing, not to mention the day job. Enjoy the holiday and keep in touch. Filiocht 11:53, Mar 16, 2005 (UTC)

Hey there[edit]

Ta for the welcome. I'm hoping to add some notes about Moville and Greencastle in Donegal, mebbe some NI/politics stuff and W.A. stuff (started with The Pinnacles Desert, then see where to go from there. I do have a question about the Irish towns. In donegal all I see is what looks like a template? I updated the main towns list to add Moville but it didn't 'auto magically' include. Been searching for a while on how to make it work. Can you pass me a link. Cheers SeanMack 23:03, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Norn Iron[edit]

Hey! I've done some changes to Norn Iron :-) I'm sure our resident republicans and unionists will find something to be unhappy about. (They usually do!) Drop by and comment if you get a chance.

Irish Neutrality[edit]

The Irish Government has declared it intends to terminate the "Triple Lock" legislation, thus removing the need for a UN Security Council Resolution before Irish soldiers take part in the military activities of the EU Battlegroups into which Irish troops are to be integrated. The government only agreed to the "triple lock" legislation after they were defeated in the Nice 1 referendum. Hardly is the ink dry on Nice 1 but they want the Irish people to vote for the EU Constitution which would commit Ireland to an EU common defence.

The Irish state established in 1919, if it agrees to the proposed EU Constitution, which is in legal terms to be superior to the exisiting Irish Constitution, ceases to exist as an Independent state. Irish Independence, Irish neutrality and Irish Democracy cease to exist in a legal sense, just as it ceased to exist following the Act of Union.

Generation after generation of Irish people have supported Imperalism, and generation after generation other Irish people have fought for Irish Independence, Irish Democracy and Irish Neutrality. This conflict will never end. Roger Cole PANA
