Sarasvati[edit]

The Vedic Sarasvati River article says that "Indra was the river deity of the Sarasvati river, the disappearance of the Sarasvati river may have been one of the causes for the diminishing popularity of Indra in Vedic culture. Indra may have been "replaced" by the similar deity Shiva, who is the river deity of the Ganges." Err, what? Where does this idea come from I've never heard of this stuff. What's the source for these theories? Paul B 23:32, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

There is the theory that there is a continuity between Indra and Shiva. If I remember correctly, the information was from this site [1]: "We also note that Shiva is the deity of the Ganges region which became the center of Indic civilization in the post-Harappan era. Vedic deities, like Indra and Agni, are those of the Sarasvati river to which the Harappan era belongs." So this theory tries to link the Indra-Shiva continuity theory with the disappearance of the Sarasvati River. I agree that this should be be better sourced. I'm moving the twos sentences to the talk page for the moment, somembody can put them back later with better sources.--Batten8 10:04, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
