Mathematics is not a static subject. One of the places that the Wikipedia could really excell is by placing the concepts of mathematics in historical context, while at the same time being able to lead the reader to the current boundaries of the subject.

I have no idea of the proper aesthetics of entries in the Wikipedia. However, I have been actively doing mathematics for about 28 years. I would very much like to share my experience by adding the historical and current contexts to definitions. I hope that those more involved in the Wikipedia will graciously correct my stylistic errors and try to even out the focus of my contributions.

Welcome to Wikipedia. There is a lot to do, and not much time to do it! As for editing I have found it most helpful to find articles I like, look at the code, and try to learn from it. Yours, sam_nead (Mon Jan 3 10:57:38 PST 2005)
Welcome! It's great to have another low-dimensional topologist on Wikipedia; there's much that remains to be done. I note we could use material on quantum invariants. Perhaps for now we should keep focused on Heegaard splittings and get that into shape, but to find other topics in need of improvement and new articles to start, visit 3-manifold and Category:3-manifolds.
Technical note: When you add comments to talk pages, you can sign it with your signature and time/date stamp by using four tildes in a row. --C S 22:10, Jan 3, 2005 (UTC)
