Voting extension[edit]

As the votes so far are not going to plan, I suggest extending the voting deadline indefinitely. Filiocht | Blarneyman 14:17, Apr 4, 2005 (UTC)

Reason for poll[edit]

Recently, there has been a spate of unprovoked [personal attacks removed] on users whose usernames begin with the letter 'T'.

To whom it may concern: Willy on Wheels was here, suckers!

The object of this poll is to introduce a new policy whereby any such attack will result in a unilateral 24 hour ban. Voting closes on April 1st and a 73.679% Support vote is required to carry the proposal. Filiocht | Talk 07:23, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)

The space below is for voting only. General discussion should go on the main page, including discussion on how this discussion page should be used. JRM 18:50, 2005 Mar 30 (UTC)

All [personal attacks removed] have been [personal attacks removed]. Netohinner 11:11, 2005 Mar 10 (UTC)

Support[edit]

  1. I think we should have a unilateral 24 hour ban for everyone who writes a comment on anyone's user page who hasn't asked for it. That way, we can stop this rash of stalkers we've been having. There are dozens of fine, upstanding, well meaning Wikipedians who have proof that they're being stalked. They just change a single category from United Kingdom to England, and all these people start following them around and undoing their changes and writing to them unsolicited on their talk pages. They just remove the VfD tags from articles that they're sure don't belong on VfD, and then they get stalked. It's horrible! Dr Tao 14:59, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
How will people request a comment? Surely by asking on the prospective commenter's talk page. This is a delicious circularity. Merge, delete and redirect r3m0t talk 21:52, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)
  2. Support. Everyone who opposes this proposal is pro-censorship. Sure, today it's autofellatio images, but tomorrow slippery slope will be deleted! JRM 23:15, 2005 Mar 30 (UTC)

  4. Non-notable. The 24-hour ban should be both automatic and retroactive, starting 1 day before its imposition. Come to think of it, I patched in an implementation of this feature yesterday. +sj + 19:05, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  7. Yes, we desperately need this protection. --The Terrible Trolls 00:00, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • We should have the ban, but it should be counted as "time served." We will mandate that developers post statistics on on-project time for each user, so that if a t-meanie harms a t-user, the person's ban will be deemed served if they have any run of hours equalling or exceeding 24 where they are not on the project. This is clearly outlined in the policies in name space that are proposed and that haven't gotten any real opposition yet. Sudden Expert 0909, 29 Feb 2005

  1. Down with the 'T' cabal. Filiocht | Talk 08:46, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)

Prove it, or let's take it outside. Filiocht | Talk 09:22, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
As you well know, the developers do not disclose the information that allows them to draw such conclusions. I would ask Tim Starling to personally comment, but given the nature of this poll and his precarious position as a developer, I have decided against it. JRM 09:29, 2005 Mar 30 (UTC)
  2. This is exactly the cind of condescending politically correct slurring that we T-namers have come to expect. We are quite capable of defending ourselves without the patronising ('Patronizing' in some lost colonies of the United Kingdom) quasi-help of social opportunists. --Theo (Talk) 09:18, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I'm just trying to return this project to its proper democratic republican roots. You people need help and I'm going to get if for you, whether you like it on not. I mean, look at the way you spelled kind; what are you, British or something? Filiocht | Talk 09:22, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
You say you seek democracy but see how you krush an intellektually advanced minority of vowel-shifters. If you knew anything about kulture outside Iron Age Ireland, Medieval Ireland and Modernist Ireland you would know that such shanges are part of the natural development of language.--Oliver Kromwell (Talk) 12:58, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Shure now Oliver, and would ye be after being anything to dat black-hearted b*****d who sent all me family and forebears to Hell or to Connacht? Add if ye are, isn't yerself I've been lookin' for dis long and many's de day and to be hittin' ye a fine skelp of me auld shillelagh that'd be knockin' ye into the middle of next week. And shure isn't it a fact well known that the finest English in the world is spoke right here in God's own island of Ireland? Now off with ye, begob, before I'm after changin' me mind. Sorry to take so long to reply—I was out painting my house orange whilst the fine weather held. Your shillelagh seems like an instrument of personal attack. Where is an administrator when you need one?--Oliver Kromwell (Talk) 17:14, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
An Orangeman, is it? And will ye be marching around here on the Twelfth, with yer big auld drums and sashes? I'll have to give the boys the nod and they'll be waitin' for ye. Filiocht | Talk 12:39, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)

Comments[edit]

  • Filiocht has been spamming people on their talk pages who have no possible stake in this poll. My username does not start with a T and it never has. Given the history, someone might consider starting an RFC. I'm so stressed out right now I'm considering leaving Wikipedia for good. JRM 08:58, 2005 Mar 30 (UTC)
    • You can call it spamming if you want, but for me its addressing the systemic democratic deficit that is rampant on this project. Filiocht | Talk 09:24, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)

  • This proposal is just another example of Wikipedia's western bias! For half the world's population, the Roman alphabet is irrelevant. Why doesn't the English Wikipedia have more Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Cherokee articles? Why are they always transliterated into the chauvanistic Roman alphabet? • Filiocht, please provide sources for the following suppositions:
    • That a letter 'T' exists
    • That any user names start with this supposed letter
    • That any bias exists against these supposed usernames that start with this supposed letter
  • or else they will have to be deleted as original research. --Arrogant Obstructionist 21:24, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • This policy does not go far enough. Anonymous users have been making [personal attacks removed] on people with a "t" in their names, and [personal attacks removed] are unacceptable and contrary to policy. Therefore all anonymous users should be blocked on sight. So should [personal attacks removed] Filiocht and R3m0t. - 208.147.76.20 07:46, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

    • 2 (two) and 3 (three) begin with the letter in question. As a . denotes the end of a sentence I think we should see each of the four IP sections as separate parts of a name. By such reasoning any anon with numbers in the range 20–39 or 200–255 (or 10, 12 or 13) should be seen as the infidel. violet/riga (t) 14:29, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
