Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

 1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
 2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. -- Ram-Man 21:24, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

I'm not at all sure how often they're regenerated, but am trying to find out. Will come back to you when I do. Thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

Hi there! Thanks for adding the image Image:Michaelis-Menten.png. It currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, and I was hoping that you would add one as untagged images may be deleted eventually. (You can use gfdl to license it under the GFDL, or fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) Thanks! --David Iberri | Talk 21:53, Dec 9, 2004 (UTC)

Unverified images[edit]

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following image:

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the imagesand I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. Peter O. (Talk, automation script) 23:47, Dec 9, 2004 (UTC)

P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.

→ Also:

See you've taken care of most of these. Thanks! Image:Deoxyribose.png wasn't tagged, but since it had the same (cryptic) "from rozeta" note as others that you marked as GFDL, I marked it likewise. (Please fix if that's not correct.) Thanks again. --Kbh3rd 00:44, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hum, it seems you don't really enjoy tagging image with copyright... Anyway, could you precise the licence of this image ? I plan to upload it in wikicommons, but can't without licence... Xillimiandus

Thanks ! Xillimiandus

Finished az images![edit]

Image tagging project[edit]

Hi, Magnus. Thanks for tagging Image:Scatman john.jpg. But I'm wondering whether it is appropriate for someone other than the original uploader to tag an image with fairuse? The current formulation says something like "the uploader asserts that..." For what it's worth, the same user has added several different images to the Scatman John article, and has been unresponsive to enquiries about the origins of the image. arj 15:24, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Yet another: Image:Ribose.png. I've tagged it as unverified for now. You can either re-tag it, or let me know and I'll get to it. I'll bet you will re-tag it though as AT THIS VERY MOMENT you are tagging images ; ) --MaxPower 16:56, 2005 Jan 6 (UTC)

Wikipedia client[edit]

Hey, what happened to the idea of a dedicated Wikipedia client? I assume you lost interest or there wasn't enough demand? Please reply on my own user talk page. r3m0t 21:45, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Return of the Untagged Image project[edit]

You were kind enough to contribute to the Wikipedia:Untagged images project; I beg to draw your attention to part 2 of the project - there are about 12,000 more images in need of tagging. Any assistance you could provide would be most welcome. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

You uploaded this picture of Caesar Augustus a long time ago. It has now been listed at the Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion since it is not used by any article. Thuresson 22:41, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Untagged Images - AN[edit]

Excellent that AN has been completed, but do you know where the page went? It show up red ... has it been deleted, do you know? --Tagishsimon (talk)

I wanted to look at its history to find out who had been active in doing it ... that seems a legitimate use of the page, at least until all the untagged images have been done. My preference, FWIW, is that we do not delete the pages until the end of this round of the untagged image project. YMMV. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)
Thanks. You did the last 263 or so ... way to go! --Tagishsimon (talk)

Maps and Wikipedia[edit]

I have started a WikiProject Geographical coordinates that aims to do something to collect and organize articles with regards to geographical coordinates. The first goal was to make a special page that collected map resources relevant for an article (click on the location of Heathrow in the infobox to see an example. (I wrote the PHP software for this, and I am running it on an external server for the time being to be able to test it. Hopefully I can be allowed to put it into the Wikipedia code proper some time.) The second goal was to provide reverse links from map resources into Wikipedia articles. I have made a proof-of-concept for that using NASA World Wind (see also the examples). mav mentioned you were working on some map thing. Please ask if there is anything I can do in that respect. -- Egil 12:27, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

See my answer on my talk page. If you could join WikiProject Geographical coordinates that would be excellent. I have a couple of PHP files that it would be really cool to have integrated into the code base. They seem to work as they are, but I see that further refinement of the concept is required. So far I am developing and testing on an external server, which works fine. -- Egil 09:15, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I have yet another answer for you on my talk page. But here is a question for you, based on the map project: I'd like to produce reverse liniking for Wikipedia articles in a format compatible with your map engine. You specify the format for lat,lon as (-)DDMMSS. Since lon can be >99 degrees, do you use DDDMMSS in that case? (I would think so). Are fractions of seconds allowed? I also assume positive is North and East. So for Mount Baker, the coordinate itself would be:

 484636,-1214852

But exactly how is the meta-data specified, when you want Mount Baker as a name and perhaps an X in the map, with a clickable link? Something like this?

 ;type:mountain
 ;name[en]:Mount Baker
 ;data:484636,-1214852

Presumably there can be many of these in one page. But how do you want them sorted?

I guess the point I am trying to make here is that a certain part of the data for the maps can be automagically generated from Wikipedia itself.

An other questions about the map concept: How do you select the right map, given only a set of coordinates? Or is that function not part of the concept.

-- Egil 18:47, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Data for the map engine[edit]

You are aware of the following sources for vector data?

BTW, I dumped a little file called "Wikipedia" into your map demo server, with I believe around 1000 points just as a demo. I was in fact able to produce a sort-of world map from it (interesting map, with no vectors. It is obvious the points are not yet evenly distributed around the earth!) All points are classified as cities, so far. I really think that the best way to get data for cities and other points of interest for your maps would be to extract them from Wikipedia.

PS: Also an answer for you back on my talk page.
