Trivial changes are a waste of everybody's time, but trivial RVs are a bit worse: RVs tend to be interpreted offensively, and they are the kind of things that provoke edit wars. You should have a better reason for edits than "so-and-so shouldn't have done that": edits should improve the page from the users perspective. Since there is no generally accepted Wikipedian style guide that lays down the law on usage of "can" vs. "may", one could with equal merit argue that the change you reverted was a valid edit. If we go down that road, you can start edit wars entirely on the basis of valid edits. I agree on your say on "can vs may". Though, I am not a native speaker, I had a feeling that may indicates some uncertainty. Only because I was unsure, I made a verbose comment. If one of them can be replaced by the other in the current case, then my edit was definitely trivial. I am sorry about that. Chennai

Wow! That question is at least a year old, if not more! It was related to the article saying Madraspattinam is an old name of the city, which I wasn't too sure of. That statement has since been removed [1]. BTW Chennapattinam is also not mentioned in the current version. -- Paddu 14:28, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I'm the guy at User talk:128.46.143.54 who made the edits to Chennai and Kapaleeshwarar temple. I was signed in at the time but I think I flushed my cookie cache halfway through! That's why the article change is listed under my IP address and not my username. Sorry for the confusion. I'm currently adding material to Chennai. Sundar, could you check the Tamil Unicode characters in the Chennai article? I have some problems with the order of characters - what renders correctly in Firefox doesn't seem to render well in IE and vice versa. I get the vowel character after the consonant, which isn't right. Now I don't know which sequence is correct. --Brhaspati 06:41, 2005 Jan 11 (UTC)

The characters are rendered properly in Firefox and not in IE. I tried to change it but then it doesn't render well in Firefox. The current version is at least readable in IE, because the order is maintained, but with some null character kind of thing lying in between. Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. Dear Sundar,

I had a doubt, I was sure you will be able to answer. I now hold a Creative Commons "Some rights reserved" licence. I was wondering if anything prevents me from putting up my contributions on my blogs. Anything legally/ethically wrong with that? Also, am I elegible to put up 'minorly edited' versions of my articles on my blog? Are they still mine??

I saw your attempt at the license. I would suggest that you remove all that and use {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}. See my userpage to know that it is exactly same as what you've done, but a more elegant way. Coming to your question, this license doesn't restrict you or any one against using this. You can use it freely even if you haven't contributed anything to an article. If you want to know the ethical perspective, I would say that, you cite wikipedia as stated in Wikipedia:Citing Wikipedia. Also, I would ask you not to put material from talk pages. Madras bashai

Just to let you know that my current project is Madras bashai. I'd like to link it strongly with Tamil language (that's the basic substrate). Do you know what exactly Ethnologue means by the "Madras dialect" of Tamil? Does that include the practice of converting "paditthu" to "padchi" and "eppadi irukke?" to "eppadi kiray?"? I'll keep an eye on Tamil language until Tuesday. The definition of dialect you gave is very accurate, but how do we justify that this is a dialect of Tamil and not English? How do we show what was the base substrate and what was the addition? Also, I've started a discussion on Talk:Chennai regarding improvements for FAC. Please suggest improvements on that page. Maps

I'm just a novice at making maps, learning the tricks of the trade. :) Ankur is the real pro at cartography. Since he is away, I don't mind volunteering for making a map. As for the map, we need a map showing the areas with "non-trivial" number of Tamil speakers, may be the intensity shall be proportional to the density/absolute number. First of all I appreciate your patience for taking the time to read this.

I am Amruta. I am a first year masters student, studying Human Computer Interaction at Georgia Tech. Currently i am enrolled in a course on online communities. As part of the course we are supposed to study an online community of our interest.

I went through wikipedia and was really amazed to find that they also had a site in Hindi. I found this really interesting and so thought about exploring how the content differs when the language changes, how people access wikipedia when it is in a different langugae or specifically when it is their mother tongue.

And so the theme for my project is

Wikipedia is available in many different languages. While the interface and concept stay the same, the content and the way people utilize it seem to be significantly different from one language to another. I can see this clearly when I compare the Hindi and English versions. How does culture effect the content and the way people participate in creating it? Which features stay the same? Which features are more exploited in different languages/cultures? If there are similar sites to Wikipedia in their original language, why do those subjects prefer (or do they) to participate in Wikipedia rather than the other alternative?

As part of this project we are supposed to interview 3 people from the community we are studying. The final result of this paper will be to write a paper based on our findings. I have a project group of 3 people all of different nationalities, one Turkish and another Spanish. I was trying to find indian and hindi speaking users for this and came across your name on wikipedia and so i thought you might be able to give me some insight on this.

The main reason to write to you is, i would really appreciate it if you could be one of my subjects for conducting an interview as you might be able to give me some insight into this issue. Participation in my study is completely voluntary. Your name or personal details will never be revealed to anyone during this course.

You've got the idea behind the map correctly. One thing that could be improved is colouring the smaller islands. Spraying paint there doesn't seem to be a good idea there as it falls inside the sea too. However, I understand that you wanted to convey the sense of "pockets" by spraying as opposed to filling. I don't think that the regions would be visible if the sea was not included. It would be too small and not visible on the Tamil language page when thumbed. PS.
