I think the distinction, although blurry, is probably more along the line of exactly what is being coded. An EAS box is always an endec, never a codec, for example. I think a line could be drawn between hardware (endecs) and software (codecs). Lemme think about that for a moment... --radiojon 09:33, 2003 Sep 7 (UTC)

- Thanks. :-) I just tweaked the article a bit, so that it deals more with the hardware, and less with what would be considered a codec. I'll try to develop it more, to give more detail about how they are used in electronics. --radiojon 09:53, 2003 Sep 7 (UTC)
- I cannot find RS (or any sources, for that matter) that define "endec". I did find several sources that say "Endec" is a trademark of Sage Alerting Systems, which makes hardware and software for applications related to emergency alert systems (EAS). However, I can find no proof that this is true. A quick google survey shows that "Endec" is most often used for EAS, and less often for IrDA SIR encoding/decoding. I think this should be merged into codec -- after removing all dubious claims (e.g. "hardware is usually considered to be an endec, while software is considered to be the codec"). I suggest a new section in codec named "Endec", which could simply say that "endec" is a popular term for codecs used for EAS and IrDA SIR encoding/decoding. Lambtron talk 20:05, 30 March 2020 (UTC)
