Skateboarding[edit]

Are you intending to delete any more skateboarding trick articles? I think the information in them is worth having in the main article, just not in lots of little ones. I'm intending to do a merge, just not tonight (it's 3.45a here). Onebyone 03:43, 5 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Sounds good that you intend to work on them. If I deleted any articles relating to it, it was because they were so small and unclear that I couldn't see what if anything the article refered to. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 03:52, 5 Jan 2004 (UTC)

New Granada[edit]

Hi! I'm trying to differentiate New Granada from the Viceroyalty of New Granada, and distribute the information equaly between Greater Colombia, History of Colombia and New Granada... as you were editing the information of New Granada -- could you help me a little bit? My english is not so wonderfull. T6435bm 23:35, 5 Jan 2004 (UTC)

It's looking good so far. I havn't always been sure of what term is best for what era; it seems to me that some sources aren't always consistant. Cheers, -- Infrogmation

U.S. Regions/Southern Edit[edit]

There is a forming WikiProject U.S. Regionswhich has created a standard article hiearchy. The Southern United States is a Census Bureau Region, which is a defined region. Meaning it’s member states are fixed and all members are always included in the region. We decided to adopt this model because Wiki was using one encyclopedia model, which included regions which increased and subsided in size based on the reader’s interpretation and thus changed the meaning, sometimes inaccurately, of the article. For example, the article on Dallas, Texas states that the DART rail was the first light rail in the Southwest, but only if California is excluded. If California is inculded, as it often is, the article is inacurate and misleading. Further more, the census bureau regions must remain intact or when we import the bureaus statistics on the they will be worthless. Under the former model wiki was using each state had as much right to be included in a given region as any other state. This is why it was decided that the Census Bureau regions, which bear officiallity, would take precedence over the other U.S. regions. This does not mean all other articles will be deleted or exluded, quite the opposite, more regional articles will be added.

Other regions will bare a different prefix "American Blank", and go into great detail about how the region can be defined. Ultimately we will merge or move all regions that are not defined over to these articles. The Southwest already has it’s map and state listing up, although the article text itself has not yet been edited. In the long run having a concrete regional system at one end and articles which discuss regions at their maximum and other various interpretations at the other, will be more efficient and less controversial than the current system. Many regional articles are heavily biased and in some cases offensive other regions do not have articles ex. Northeast. When I started to add regions to the U.S. states page. I found that Wiki had an article on the Pacific Northwest, which had been completely excluded from that article. The only alternative to a standard model for use in statistics and data staments and another set of liberal and wholistic inclusion and discussion would be to have a "war" similar to what has happened in the computer science articles. Can you imagine if a article "war" can develope over computer science what would happen over a culture and geographic inclusion.

Please feel free to join in the project discussion or become a participant. U.S. Region is a very important project, that needs wikipedians like you behind it. I do not like to revert things but I will be changing the article back to reflect the correct member listing.

Thanks for your comment on my Shelly Manne. The list of your own contributions is staggering. Very impressive. Kudos on the very fair and reasonable Amos & Andy (I caught and fixed two very minor errors, nothing to do with the content). Keep up the good work. I'll try to do more as time permits. -- Alan W 05:29, 30 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Well, I've hacked together something not entirely ugly at Franklin stove. Have I mangled anything you can see? I'm basing my guesses on a dim recollection of a Franklin biography I read 15 years ago....probably unwise. Thanks for the vote of confidence: I'm always tentative around here, and like to know I'm doing at least semi-worthwhile work. Happy editing, Jwrosenzweig 19:42, 30 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Please understand that I do not see myself as a vandal. Thusly, when Hephaestos banned me; I feel he was abusing his sysop powers. Is it so unreasonable that I feel I should be able to lodge a complaint, at least for a day or two? Lirath Q. Pynnor

Lodging a complaint when you think something is being done wrong is, IMO something very appropriate. Other considerations: 1) Has this been discussed anywhere else? 2)If you want something dramatic done here, you need to work to get a consensus. 3)Even if he acted inappropriately in your case, Hephaestos has been a long term contributor & sysop, and you'd probably need a detailed case to get a consensus that the drastic step of desysoping him is necessary. 4)Some people seem to think the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship is not appropriate place for what may be seen as more of a personality dispute than a sysop status problem. 5)Again, reverting and re-reverting does nothing but make people annoyed with you. If you keep getting reverted, try something different, like taking it to the talk page or somewhere else. -- Infrogmation 01:35, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Salutaions from Belize[edit]

As you know I am new at this but like the concept and want to help. You asked where I got the text for my additons to the Belmopan artical, the answer is City Hall and it was public domain. I live out in unicorporated land myself but go to Belmopan to shop every once and a while. I updated personal page (I think) to reflect on some things I have to offer wikipedia. Belizian

Glad to have you here! -- Infrogmation 18:30, 5 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Problem[edit]

Hey at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belize you have a link to tropical which is an existing page but when you click it it brings up create a new page don't know why. If you look at it and figure out why let me know please. Belizian 17:18, 2004 Feb 5 (UTC)

Someone had made that a link to "tropical climate" which didn't exist. I changed the link to the existing article at Tropics, and also made "tropical climate" redirect there. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 18:30, 5 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Where to put Pictures[edit]

I have posted to several places but seem to get no response. I have a lot of pictures of the flora and fauna of Belize that I would like to put up for usage but I don't know scenfific names so I don't know wher to put them or how to name em for that matter. Can you point me to someone who can help? Belizian 23:30, 2004 Feb 6 (UTC)

I think someone on the village pump already had a good suggestion. For photos you don't yet have an identity for, a seb-page of your own page would be a good place for you to put them until people determine a better location. You could put them at User:Belizian/pictures. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 01:32, 7 Feb 2004 (UTC)

As I'm sure you noticed they are hung off of the Main page as they all relate to Belize. Belizian 19:21, 2004 Feb 12 (UTC)

Is it poss to check?[edit]

I note you deleted the New Zealand animals page. I suspect (but don't know) that the page contained some info before it was vandalised. If that is so, can that be retrieved? Cheers Moriori 21:19, Feb 12, 2004 (UTC)

I do check article history before deleting when there's any question of a possibly usefull earlier version. The complete text before the "delete test" message was: "The animals of New Zealand are the biash, a mammal that only thinks about sex; the whoret, a species that like to stay naked Their penis are big and fat." I think that was a speedy deletion candidate. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 21:28, 12 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Tks for quick response. Yes, speedy deletion candidate, indeed. I am surprised there was no content pre that vandalism. Cheers. Moriori 21:42, Feb 12, 2004 (UTC)
Oh, and as far as I know there is currently no option for users without sysop access to see deleted text, though there's been some discussion about setting up a way to do that. And should you ever think that a page was deleted inappropriately, you can bring it up on Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion. Hope this helps. -- InFrog
Tks. No, I certainly don't think the page was deleted inappropriately. As I said, I was surprised there was no content. We Kiwi wikipedians need to get A's into G. Cheers Moriori 21:42, Feb 12, 2004 (UTC)

Hallo/Sorry[edit]

Sorry Infrogmation. You left a message for me on the 30th of December (concerning old time radio) and I didn't get it because I was still very new to Wikipedia and didn't entirely understand how the message system works.

I've done the merging of the two articles you suggested. Thanks for letting me know.

Nice pix[edit]

Nice Folies Bergères pix. I played with the placement a bit, see if you think it's improved... I'd love to stick Josephine Baker in a banana skirt on there, but I can't find a pic that doesn't say copyright... Also looking for an encyclopedic way to say the place catered to prurient interests by including a good deal of nudity, and to the Parisian fascination with "négritude" of the 1920s... Maybe I'll try that and see how it fares. - Nunh-huh 21:42, 26 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. Yes, we need to be clear about how purient interests were catered to while remaining encyclopedic. The subject of the French facination with "négritude" might be a subject worth expanding on somewhere. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 22:18, 26 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Type 21[edit]

If you're wondering about the type 21 article, then it is intended to be expanded eventually. In only used the message links because they are available. Had I not known about the MediaWiki functionality, I likely would have created a conventional list of class members. I actually ran across the Cleanup notice as I was going to the article to start adding information to the class member pages that it links to.

The rationale behind sticking such articles in the wiki is that a lot of people simply don't even know what ships were in the Royal Navy. There is no standard reference work such as DANFS available for the RN in the same way, so merely listing what the ships are is valuable in its own right. David Newton 05:20, 27 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. I was wondering about the bunch of stublets. I'm glad you explained before I had a chance to ask you. Best wishes, -- Infrogmation 18:35, 27 Feb 2004 (UTC)

American[edit]

(re: Infrogmation moving USA specific article "List of American radio networks" to "List of United States radio networks")

Changing names from American to United States is very controversial and should not be taken without discussion. RickK 04:55, 2 Mar 2004 (UTC)

It has been discussed here for some years. While a few people get upset if the more vague term isn't used, a larger number seem to prefer precise terms for encyclopedia articles. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 04:58, 2 Mar 2004 (UTC)
And there is no consensus to make this change. In addition, the precise term would be United States of America. After all, we wouldn't want to offend the citizens of the United States of Mexico. RickK 05:02, 2 Mar 2004 (UTC)
*Yawn* Why not continue this ancient discussion on Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (US vs American) , or try to get a consensus somewhere like the Village Pump if you prefer. -- Infrogmation 05:14, 2 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Surprised to find that policy contradicts practice[edit]

Hi, thanks for your note on my talk page. I have replied there. Oddly the upshot is that my move was actually in line with policy, though I didn't know it at the time, and that that policy is completely at odds with de facto standards on article pages. Something to clear up perhaps? Pete/Pcb21 (talk) 15:53, 3 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Howler Monkey[edit]

Ah! I hadn't realized the smaller pic had been altered. I really prefer not having a separate image link for the larger image. Would it be possible to alter the larger image so that it works at 200 px? This is one of the places my color-blindness handicaps me.... - UtherSRG 02:52, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)

1906 San Francisco earthquake pix[edit]

I just wander through pages with links to a "larger image" and replace them with the auto-thumbnailed version. My reasons for that include

  • More unified look of wikipedia
  • The uploaded thumbnail pics will be deleted once search functions are back online (new server...), which will reduce work for us when re-classifying the copyright status of all our images
  • I need to keep busy while the compiler is runnig ;-)

If you don't like the auto-thumbnailed version, just change it back; I promise I won't start an edit war! :-) --Magnus Manske 16:24, 18 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Benito Juárez[edit]

Actually, it should be Conservadores and not Conservativos -- if we're trying to use the Spanish word, not some sort of strange English calque. Check out, for example, [1]. Or google for <"Benito Juarez" conservativos> vs. <"Benito Juarez" conservadores>. Probably lower case and in italic is the way to go, too. Hth, Hajor 19:09, 19 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. I don't know where I picked up "Conservativos". I tend to be skeptical of edits by unlogged in users who have made no other edits. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 19:17, 19 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I photoshopped your Berliner disc picture in Analogue disc record[edit]

Hope you don't mind. I took the liberty of tweaking the contrast (and using a little piece from the right edge to fill in the little sliced-off segment at the left. It's a wonderful picture and I thought it was a shame that you couldn't easily make out the information in the "label." I tried uploading the images under the same names but for some reason that didn't work, so there my adjusted versions are named EBerlinerGramophoneDisc2.jpg and BerlinerDisc2.jpg. I converted the png to a jpg which didn't seem to lose any visible information and reduced the file size down to 24 kb. Dpbsmith 02:34, 20 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Every Thing Must Go

link fron Manics Street Preachers now corrupted by new page Scraggy4

Replied to on User talk:Scraggy4 -- Infrogmation

It is just that when I now click on the Everything Must Go link on the manics page it goes to the steely dan page. and as you seem to be more capable of using wiki than me I wondered how it could be changed so that it goes to the correct Everything Must Go link for the manic that was previously there.

Um, no. The title Everything Must Go does not redirect to Steely Dan. Someone (User:Cptchipjew I see from the page history) started that article by mentioning that there is a Steely Dan album of that title. I added, at your urging that there is also a Manic Street Preachers album of that name, which you could have done yourself. Add more if you like. If you think they should be seperate articles, you can change the links on pages that link there to something like "Everything Must Go (Manic Street Preachers)" etc as appropirate and change the "Everything Must Go" into a Wikipedia:Disambiguation page. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 16:44, 11 Apr 2004 (UTC)

? Mark Todd[edit]

At 02:27, 18 Apr 2004 you left me a message, namely --I don't understand the purpose for the article you created at Mark Todd, UK politician with no text other than the stub notice. I also noted that no other pages linked there. I couldn't see any use for that, so I deleted it. If this was inappropriate, let me know. No, entirely appropriate, and coincidental with a message I left at 02:19, Apr 18, 2004 on User talk:AntonioMartin's page re a boo boo I made, namely -- On the New Zealand page under Prominent New Zealanders there is a Mark Todd. Unfortunately he links to Mark Todd, a UK politician. Sooo, I wanted to create a disamb page for Mark Todd, containing Mark Todd, NZ equestrian linking to his own page (with stub message for time being}, and Mark Todd, UK politician linking to his own page. Basic, except that I created the Mark Todd, UK politician page BEFORE doing the move. So I'm stuck. Can you fix please? No need now as you have done it. ...for helping to improve my Chris Owens entry. I'm new to wikipedia but I think I'm doing a pretty good job so far. I was surprised to see such a "higherup" Wikiuser edit that particular entry, who also happens to be from New Orleans! Pacian 04:44, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Don't think of me (and other admins) as "higherup" so much as folks who've had more experience hanging around here and have taken on some bureaucratic chores to try to help the project. I'm interested in my home town and articles related to some of our colorful characters. I threw in the reference to "Wacky World of Dr. Morgus" in the Chris Owens article as it's interesting to see some footage of her back then, presumably before plastic surgury. Hm, I guess Morgus the Magnificent should get an article eventually. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 15:33, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)
