Images

Nice to see you work with the Indian Railways, the current Indian Collaboration of the week. you've uploaded some images which are in the .gif format. Is it possible to reupload it in the .png format? Wikipedia prefers that format. Regards,  =Nichalp (Talk)= 14:31, Jun 12, 2005 (UTC)

I have another suggestion. Since you are licencing the image under GFDL, would you consider signing up in wikimedia commons:? Once there, it would be preferable to upload GFDL, Public Domain or Creative Commons licenced media instead of uploading to the English wikipedia. Why? The commons is the central depository of *FREE* images. The images there can be embedded into any wikipedia language (English included) instead of just the English wiki if you upload it here. I've looked for one in the past to no avail and after seeing how much Millfield boasted on their page was just about to create one. Dorothy Payne Whitney

You inserted in her article that son, Michael Straight had briefly been the lover of Anthony Blunt while at Cambridge. I am researching him and his brother to do articles but cannot find anything about him having a homosexual affair. I have removed it for now, but please reinsert it with details of your sources. Thanks for the most useful info. Do you have a link to the Telegraph article. I don't think quoting the Telegraph in this case is proper since The Guardian, New York Times, Washington Post etc. don't mention this and the idea he was gay is inconsistent with his lifelong marriages and five children plus his high-profile pursuit of numerous women. While at Cambridge, Straight was dating Teresa Georgina Mayor, who later became Mrs. Victor Rothschild. As to Whitney Straight, I have a bio in process. Do you have a link to the Sunday Times May 10 1987 article regarding the Russian theft of technology? Info from that would be well worth inserting into Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15. Do you have a direct link to the Daily Telegraph article? I'm concerned that someone "said" it appeared in the Telegraph when it did not. I have found very considerable amounts of "disinformation" labeled as direct quotes on the Web, one site even had a phony "exclusive" interview using standard Q & A outlines. I'm extremely cautious when putting anything from the Web into Wiki because of the bias and deliberate misinfiormation out there. As to Whitney straight, I have found some website stuff on him that is indeed interesting. Coincidentally, I'm doing a bio for Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, his cousin who was the founder of the Aviation Corporation of America which became Pan American Airways. Thanks. The link worked fine. However, I don't buy their quote, particularly when in the same article they also erroneously say his book was published in 1993. NNDB

I was not aware that the NNDB lacks credibility. In any event, it's true that they do welcome submissions of biographical information, but how can you be sure that they have no process of verifying what they add? Edward Quinan

I did not mean to diminish Quinan's notability. I was just hung up on the impression I have that the generals who recently invaded Iraq did so successfully, in as much as they achieved their immediate military goals. I know you what you say is compatible with this - it is just that it seems a rather tortous claim to fame to be the last person to make a near simultaneous succesful invasion of 3 countries. It is notable enough for me that he was obviously a senior war time commander with important achievements. Also to be thoroughly nit picking on style, if you will forgive me, I personally would tend to avoid using the specific words his main claim to fame was and instead just concisely list the notable things. -- Op. Barfleur battle

(Didn´t know where to put this and I decided to moved to your disscusion page, if you want you can put it in the Barfleur-La Hogue discussion page). Hello, just back from the library, again. Well N.A.M. Rogers is right, Tourville was winning the battle until 7pm when the wind changed and Ashby, who went south early in the battle with 22 ships -almost his entire squadron-chasing Gabaret division (of just 3!) could go back and engaged Tourville´s from both sides, that´s when the Soleil Royal and the Ambitieux got heavily damaged under fire of 4 and 5 english ships on both sides (Almonde´s Dutch ships were fighting at the vanguard and trying not to get surrounded by Nesmond and Amfreville´s divisions). Only the change of the tide with its strong streams saved Tourville who(after repeling a first attack with fire ships) anchored his ships. Russell, being unawared of those tricky waters, was drifted by the tide westward. All this information,I have a few pages, and more(mainly XVIIth naval history) I hand-copied for months at the library (you are not allow to take those books out nor to fotocopy them) Some librarians looked at me as if I were somo kind of freak! I hope you can excuse my English, I am Spanish, so I have to make big efforts to writte properly. I made a couple of corrections at the bibliography I gave you and as soon as my server´s problems are fixed I´ll send you the plans from the battle ( 5 different plans I copied with the fleet positions and evolutions). Thanks very much Ruben for such a prompt follow-up. I think we are converging on agreement. I think you have studied this more than I. The reason I got interested in La Hogue was that gold medals were issued to English Captains to commemorate the battle, and I was trying to find out more about it. I think we need one or two key pictures of the formation of the ships at critical phases of the battle. Your English is fine. I will check anything you put on the main article page to make sure it reads well, so just go ahead and make what edits you think are needed. Your info could add some interesting detail. No, I was on the look out but did not come across any quirky reminisences in two short notes which appeared in The Times a few days after the obit. These sometimes contain memories which reveal some colourful details. Anyway it is a nice article with a good picture - I am glad to have been able to contribute to your efforts. -- Op. They've killed the List of famous failures in science and engineering! You Bastards!!

Mmx1 is taking the fight that I have over the F-14 and F-111 to the failure page, and he has nominated them for deletion. The wiki-thugs are all voting to delete the page. Mmx1 has reversed the F-14 page to state that it is not, and has never been designed as a maneuverable air superiority fighter, and is not accepting any contrary citations up to and including a F-14 test pilot, Janes Defence, and Aviation Week. He is apparently taking revenge against other pages. Please go to the deletion page and tell the administrators what is going on. Look at the patterns of MMx. He regular accuses others of gross misinformation and summarily reverts most edits as a self-appointed judge of all truth, but in fact should not be allowed this leeway. --matador300 11:00, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Allama Mashriqi

Hi - thanks for your compliments. The article is in a much improved condition since I last saw it. Now the work of Mashriqi's grandson isn't exactly a problematic source, so I suggest you don't remove that without a lengthy discussion. But the anon is certainly wrong in reverting your edits and removing the content you're adding. What I advise you to do is to do your work and discuss issues with the anon and other editors, but don't undertake multiple reverts of the anon (keep WP:3RR in mind). It never pays to lose your cool, so take a break from editing here if you feel the need. As for the anon, I'm gonna warn him about 3RR, edit warring and removing content repeatedly, which is vandalism - if the violations continue, he/she will be blocked. Hmm, I'll delete the wisteria claim. It's another edit of mine (from the days before WP:V was quite so hot), and unlike the irises and mulberry trees, I know it only as a college legend. Of course, it may well be possible to ref as a legend, but the value is low, I'd say.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Thank you for this edit. However if you add information to an article please cite the source from when it came. If you are unsure how to cite the ONDB then simply copy the text at the bottom of the ONDB article in this case:

However there is a nifty template which can help fill out the details called {{cite ODNB}}. At its simplest all you need add is:

The as you will see from the documentation of the template, it can take a number of additional parameters for things like author. I have added the template to the Richard Keble article using some of these additional parameters.
