This template is intended to make coding of infoboxes in chemical element articles easier.

NOTE: The template has not been fully tested and may go through several changes before it is ready for routine use. It should not be used on main namespace articles until it has been tested and released, which will be specifically noted on this talk page. In the mean time, testing may be performed on individual users' personal pages.

Instructions on how to use the template[edit]

When using the template, one must forward the element properties as variables to the template. The variables have names such as Element_name, Chemical_symbol, etc. Most of the variable names are immediately visible on the template page, but for a full overview of variables and their use, see below.

One example of using the template is given at User:Eddideigel/Fantasticum. This example includes, among other things:

The variables may be defined in any order inside the template brackets. Empty space may be used to align text, but this is not important. Variables that are unknown, or just not filled in yet, should be defined as blank to avoid too much garbage in the output.

There are a few potholes, including Title_color (title background turns black if undefined), Ionization_potential (may be difficult in case of multiple potentials), and Isotope_table (may be difficult to fill in, but the result looks good when filled in properly). For further details see below.

Discussion[edit]

I think there should be a single template for chemical elements, and so I made this one from several others. (They were called Template:Chemical element infobox begin, Template:Chemical element infobok entry, etc.) For testing of the template, see User:Eddideigel/Fantasticum. Comments and suggestions are very welcome. --Eddi (Talk) 02:39, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)
