Toyota Truck[edit]

Hey there -- we already have a very good article on Toyota. What are you planning to do with the Toyota Truck article that will make it essential? I strongly suggest that you go over to Talk:Toyota and ask what you can do there to expand the article's information on Toyota trucks, rather than making your own article. Thanks. Merge truck to Hi-Lux?[edit]

Hello Gregkar! I just ran across Madame Sosostris's comments about the Toyota Truck page. My recommendation is that this information needs to be coördinated with the that on the Toyota Hi-Lux page. These trucks have always been nearly identical (except, of course, for the name) and there's significant advantage in grouping the foreign and native variants.

That being said, the standard around here is to put everything into the page for the natively named variant—in this case, that would be the Toyota Hi-Lux. The information you've got on this page is pretty incredible, however, and it wouldn't surprise me that we'd need to split the Hi-Lux page up, but I suspect that the right way to do that would be by splitting it up by generation, not market. The policy for all of this can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Automobiles/Proposed_naming_convention. I'm absolutely up for more discussion of the topic if you think otherwise. Please bring it up either here or on my talk page so I can keep track of it.

I'm going to presume that you have a lot of content ready for the Toyota Truck Service Data and Toyota Truck Maintenance pages. As far as I can tell, the proper place for these would be at Toyota Hi-Lux/Service data and Toyota Hi-Lux/Maintenance.

Also, don't take my criticism too harshly—I really wish someone had pointed all of this out to me when I first started! The work you've done so far on the Truck page is really genuinely good stuff, and I'm looking forward to seeing more from you later. I'd also like to invite you to formally join the Automobiles WikiProject.

Reply to Merge to Hi-Lux[edit]

I agree in part, and disagree in part. When i created this page, I was unaware that there already existed a Toyota Hi-Lux page. I agree that the historical data needs to be merged and organized by model, not by market.

However, I have a special Italic textad hocItalic text purpose to get service, maintainence, and modification (hoit rodding) data available to the North American Toyota 4x4 enthusiast. The scope of my project is far too off-topic for teh general Toyota Corporate page or the Hi-Lux history page.

I will merge what I can and try to eliminate redunacy where possible.

Understood about the service, maintenance, and modification pages. I've been tempted to throw together pages like this for some of the article's I've written (e.g., Toyota Camry and Toyota 4Runner) but I haven't yet found the right way to present this data in a way that reflects the Wikipedia's mission. I'm thinking, in specific, of how-to guides—my understanding is that the Wikipedia is meant to be informative instead of instructional. It's not at all unreasonable to start putting together how-to guides for servicing things, but this is a big departure from what we've got already, and probably warrants a discussion at the Automobiles WikiProject page, and possibly even at the main Wikipedia discussion pages. There are a lot of examples of things like this getting spun off into distinct projects (e.g., the Wikibook Cookbook) instead of being stored here. I think the general consensus is that if you wouldn't expect to see it in a paper-print encyclopedia, it needs to be discussed.

Also, the standard for discussion on talk pages is to only use new headings when a new topic is formed. Replies generally go beneath the current topic, and new entries are offset with several colons—one colon for the first reply, two for the second, etc.. --Milkmandan 18:30, 2005 Jan 18 (UTC)

Actually, on that note, the Wikipedia:Style and How-to Directory is the standard directory for style here. Additionally, it's standard to sign talk page entries with four tildes (this is automatically replaced by your username and date) so it's easy to track when changes are made. --Milkmandan 18:33, 2005 Jan 18 (UTC)

Images[edit]

Greg- Just to warn you, we need a copyright release for all images on the Wikipedia. Government images are usually fine, but for anything that isn't explicitly released into the public domain or under a comparable license (GFDL, etc.) doesn't count. Certain images (such as photos used in press releases and advertisements) can sometimes count as fair-use, but that's about it. Otherwise, we can't use them. I've run into this problem in the past, and it's a real bummer. Of course, any photos you take yourself are absolutely fair game if you're willing to release them under a free license. --Milkmandan 01:21, 2005 Jan 19 (UTC)

Sure! A list of examples is at image copyright tags. Just stick the appropriate template (e.g., {{GFDL}}) in the page for the corresponding image—simply follow the image over to its page and then hit the edit link. In cases where the image isn't obviously public-domain, it's generally polite to put a release from the copyright holder. A good example is at [1]. --Milkmandan 01:54, 2005 Jan 19 (UTC)

Creating Articles w/ Categories[edit]

Good work creating new articles. When you create things, it helps tremendously to assign them to an accurate category (see WP:CG for info). If you're really not sure about categories, at least assign your new articles a stub category (see WP:SC for info). By assigning a category, you help make sure your new articles don't get lost as 'orphans' that are not associated with related topics. Feco

In each instance, I either own the image outright, or have knowledge that it is freely available in the public domain, or know that it is available under the Fair Use doctrine. In one instance, I cite and link back to the copyright holder's public use license and cite their permission for non-comercial use. On the copyright protected images that I own, don't hold your breath for me to liberalize the license. There's nothing complex about a limited non-commerical use revokable license. It's generous enough that I've granted the revokable license already in existance.

Hi, Greg. Thanks for uploading images. :) I wanted to check in with you about the licenses on Image:Peterbilt Model 359 Semi-End-Dump.jpg and Image:Peterbilt Model 359 Transfer Dump.jpg. Having a license which is not free makes it very difficult to use these images in Wikipedia. We prefer the use of the GFDL license, which requires attribution and requires that any modified versions of the image are also licensed under the GFDL. The notice on the upload page indicates that if you hold the copyright to a picture, you must license it under the GFDL or release it into the public domain. If you're not willing to do one of these things with your photos, they'll be deleted from Wikipedia.

If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days.
