This is my page. I guess you'll want to know a bit about me. Well, I don't have much to put here, but I may in the future.

The Reason You're Probably Looking At This

I've been half-following the Wikipedia vs. Webcomics thing. What finally got me to take notice was the threat of deletion for the El Goonish Shive article, which is one of my favourite webcomics.

I do not understand the apparent persecution of webcomic articles. To quote myself:

• As a result of the recent burst of webcomic article deletions, and accompanying discussion/rants from fans/authors, I've realised that I'm entirely unclear on Wikipedia's actual policy regarding webcomics notability, and it seems like I will need to read a years' worth of discussion to figure out exactly what is and is not accepted. This is an extremely daunting task. I think I shan't be trying. A relatively concise, explicit explanation would be very welcome, though.

• It seems to me that while very few webcomics (indeed, none but the most famous, equivalent in notability within their respective worlds (webcomics and printed fiction) to perhaps Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings) will be discussed at all extensively in non-webcomics-related sources, surely it must count for something if they are notable within the webcomics community. I feel like it has to be said: if Wikipedia is to compare a category with one sort of following - webcomics - to a category with another sort of following - everything off the internet - in terms of what makes it "notable", then I do not think Wikipedia's policy is adequate.

I understand that most likely any suggestions I make will be thoroughly ignored, due to my lack of contributions, general newness, and lack of reputation of any sort; this impression is partially created and well-reinforced by the cliquey and elitist reputation Wikipedia has got in my usual internet haunts.

But there is my 2 cents. I suppose it is worth about that much.

My interests

I have many interests, so I'll just name some of the major ones.

Writing

I greatly enjoy writing stories, mostly fanfiction, sci-fi, and fantasy stories. I've written several original fiction short stories, begun three potentially novel-length stories, and written a great deal of fanfiction. If I ever manage to put this stuff up in one place I guess I can link here.

Reading

Reading is an excellent pastime and I ought to do more of it.

My favourite F/SF authors

• Gene Wolfe - I'm working through The Book of the New Sun, a quartet set in the far, far future, and it's very good work, if a bit hard to read in large chunks.
• Mercedes Lackey - She created the world of Velgarth and wrote a series of books set there with a very complex, ongoing plot.
• JRR Tolkien - The creator of Lord of the Rings; how could any fantasy fan not like him?
• Terry Pratchett - A comedic genius; the author of the Discworld books.
• Neil Gaiman - Not sure how I can describe his work, except that it tends towards the fantastical encountering the mundane.

Webcomics

Oh yeah. Webcomics: a source of much debate on and off the 'Kipedia. I love them, and read around 30 per week (most, I think, still have got their articles up; some may never have had articles at all).

Theatre

I act when I get the chance. I'm particularly fond of Shakespeare.

In addition, I'm a member of the Ring of Steel, a theatrical combat group.

Fandom

A large part of my life is fandom. The fandoms I'm active at all in are parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean slash community and the El Goonish Shive fan community. I've created an archive of PG-13, PG, or G-rated PotC slash fiction involving Jack Sparrow, written a good deal of fanfiction (most of which can be found on my LiveJournal), and multiple pieces of EGS fanart can be found on my DeviantArt.
