Talk:Transvestism (disambiguation)

It was decided, partly on the basis of dictionary definitions [1], to make this a disambiguation page. Because the "correct" definition of the word transvestite is so controversial, the article instead links to Wiktionary:transvestite, and avoids giving a definition. This may be changed if readers ask for it. The main consequence of these discussions was making a strong distinction between cross-dressing and transvestic fetishism.

Conversion to disambiguation page[edit]

I suppose I should explain my rationale for the changes I made to this page (and related pages). Note that I came across this page because it had a disambiguation cleanup tag on its, so I boldly modified it.

First, I moved the page to Transvestism (disambiguation), and changed Transvestite to a redirect to Transvestism. I did this because the terms are closely associated and it seemed logical.

Next, I modified the page to make it strictly conform to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages). (Consequently, I had to axe the external links, among other things.)

Lastly, I put disambiguation hatnotes at Transvestism and Cross-dressing that direct to here.

I sincerely hope my good faith efforts are acceptable.

Addendum

Well, I actually used a somewhat loose interpretation of disambiguation. In this case, I felt that the meaning of the word was the key issue.

Sorry, but that was decidedly not well done - what people look up unter transvestism is particularly not just men in dresses, so to basically narrow it down to that and then refer people to other articles was a spectacularly bad idea. May have been in good faith, but sure has not been a good idea. I recommend you actually move beyond the scope of the Jerry Springer show and actually read the articles in question. -- AlexR 11:02, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
