Recent edits to Clinton article

I see you've expanded the "Accusations, impeachment, and legal problems" section of the Bill Clinton article. Unfortunately, I believe some of it will be considered non-NPOV and much of it belongs, perhaps, in other articles dealing with specific scandals (whether they currently exist or not). I have no strong interest myself in maintaining the Clinton article so please don't take this as an attack; I just figured I'd give you a friendly warning before you start seeing others reverting your edits. Also, I see that you're a journalist. Ohio State Government

In response to your note on my talk page: My source for elected officials is Official Roster of Federal, State, and County Officers and The Ohio Municipal, Township and School Board Roster, both published by the Ohio Secretary of State. It looks like that information is also available on the Secretary of State's web site. [1] Unfortunately, it doesn't look to go down to the level of local zoning board and so forth. Great job with the table!

I did make one change in Georgia - the only state of which I am qualified to speak - from "Circuit Superior Court" to "Superior Court". Pleadings, orders &c. are captioned "Superior Court of _______ County", although judges and D.A.'s normally have their stationery, signatures etc. Judge/District Attorney for the ______________ Judicial Circuit.

Another Political Junkie from Ohio

Thanks for the kind words. I'd seen your handle on some of the pages I'd worked on, e.g. my former congressman, Frank Cremeans. I've also expanded some articles you began, John W. Griffin, Thomas Kindness, Bill Harsha. Good to read your article on the lady challenging Michael R. Turner this year. That's my congressional district and I didn't know anything about her save her name. You've probably seen it, but I've a long list of articles I've made sizable contributions to on my user page including many in legal and political biography. For example, I put the predecessor/successor boxes on all the associate justices of the Supreme Court and wrote blurbs on all the reporters save the current one who I haven't been able to find anything on.
May I make one suggestion about creating new biographies? If you create articles under a nickname, e.g. Tom Kindness, would you put in redirects under the full name? I didn't see your Kindness article at first and started writing either under Thomas or Thomas N, then combined the two. I know I'm guilty of this as well because when I went to look at my own Charles Sanders article just now, I couldn't find it because I'd entered it under Charles W. Sanders.

My apologies if I bumped into you on the Government of Ohio article. I saw it down on my watchlist where you'd worked on it earlier today and took a look, which spurred me to make a couple revisions to the section on the State Board of Ed. I just noticed from the edit history you were on there at the same time and I probably caused you an edit conflict. I do apologize.
One useful wikipedia call is to put the "inuse" template at the top of a page you are editing. That will put up a flag warning everyone to step aside because you are working. I use this especially when I'm making a lot of edits because some of our eagle-eyed contributors waste no time to start editing. Please avoid moving a page by cutting and pasting it's contents into a new location. The appropiate action is to use the "move" tab at the top of the page, which opens a page asking for the new title. I copied the party affiliations of the Secretaries of State from the list in the back of the Ohio Secretary of State's "Official Roster of Federal, State and County Officers" (Columbus, Ohio: The Secretary, biennial). The one Secretary with no party listed in the Wikipedia article is also blank in the book. The older editions have information deleted from the newer, such as the legal descriptions of the Congressional districts from the first apportionment onward. I was taught in school to spell out numbers under one-hundred and in journalism class to always use the word percent in stories rather than the symbol and our stylebook endorses the latter while says either is acceptable on the former. Hi there! I'm glad you want to contribute to the List of U.S. political families, but please note that it is, strictly speaking, confined to family members who are politically active. Neil Bush, Barbara and Jenna Bush, etc., are not politically active at present (although who knows about the future?), so they should not be included. Moreover, the list is not meant to be a scandallog. It's not a place to include Bush's daughters' underage drinking (which you put in) or Kennedy's nephews cocaine snorting (which you didn't). Therefore, I have reverted your latest edits. If you want to print scandal, however, List of notable U.S. presidential relatives is the perfect place for you - Neil Bush is already there, you can add Barbara and Jenna if you wish, etc. David Cannon 08:22, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Howdy. I've been going back and forth on whether to delete the Hagans and Riffes from the List of U.S. Political Families page, and I figured I'd drop you a friendly note before doing anything rash. The talk page on that article seems to have dried up and I never got any responses to my query about what threshhold should be set for calling a family a "U.S." family, as opposed to something else, as part of my mission to clean up and standardize that page. Neither the Hagans nor the Riffes seem to have contributed any individuals to any national political office; the number of families with multiple members active in state and county politics in all the states is enormous, especially if history is taken into account, and I can't justify trying to add all those families. While the Hagans and Riffes are no doubt notable in Ohio, I don't believe they belong on a page devoted to nationally notable families. I'm leaning toward deleting, but I'll let you have your say if you wish. Perhaps a page of Ohio political families is in order. Thehappysmith 04:48, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Number of votes per voter in a multimember at-large election?

Suppose that we are electing a school board or town council where there are no districts, and the election is "at large". Suppose that there are N vacancies. The voter might have 1 vote to cast amongst the several candidates, or N votes, or 1 <= M <= N. Which applies in Cincinnati, Ohio. How many names must a voter cross off on the ballot paper?

If the answer is N, then the board or council is likely to be run by a landslide result, with no representation from other parties, even the second biggest party.

If the answer is M, then a landslide is less likely, and there is likely to be some reprentation from the second biggest party.

If the answer is 1, then there is likely to be wide selection of representation of big and small parties.

Thus the number of votes per voter is important.

PS I just noticed that the discussion for the Cinncinati elections left of the heading "How Many Votes per voter". DRAT.

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Today I did two short articles on Ohio government, Ohio State Board of Education (largely copied from one of the other government articles) and Ohio Ballot Board. Hindustani

Hi,

I've completely redone the intro to the Hindustani article, based on the idea that, before Partition, the term referred to Urdu (standard Hindi didn't yet exist), and that it is but one of many "dialects" of Hindi, not the whole dialect chain, as the article presented it. Needless to say, the people who believe that Hindustani is a "mix" of Hindi and Urdu think this is absurd. I would appreciate any input you might have. kwami 21:16, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. The question of an article gaining feature status is not about how important the person or topic is but whether or not the article is any good. On my articles on Tom Brinkman and Julia Stiles objections were made when they were on the front page about how noteworthy the subjects were. One person is trying to erase the concept of Jefferson's and Madison's Republican Party, from changing the (now) alternate name to "Republicans" and violating WP:MOS by unbolding the alt names in the first sentence. I think the fact that no less than four seperate people disagreed with it means the consensus is against the addition of the names. A while back I may have even made a note on the Instruments project, and gone boldly reverting all the changes in the name of consensus...but now, I don't care. In response to your comment on my take talk page, that's simply not the case. In fifteen years of playing solos, chamber music, and band music, I have never, ever, not once, seen the word "eufonio" printed at the top of a page. Nor, in my extensive experience doing score study, is that true for any other instrument: our sheet music does not call a horn a "corno," nor a trumpet a "tromba," nor a bassoon a "fagotto." Unless, of course, you are in Italy. Which we are not.

Forgive me for being blunt, but your blanket assertion of "it's still very likely that when you pick up a sheet of music, the name of the instrument will be in Italian" simply does not correspond to reality. At all. Period. --NetherlandishYankee (talk) 22:49, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Don Draper/Real Name

I've noticed that you changed the opening sentence of the Don Draper entry to read "Born Dick Whitman". I had previously changed the entry to read "also known as Richard Whitman" for a very specific reason. The phrase "Born Dick Whitman", "Born Norma Jean Baker" or any other such permutation in a Wikipedia article suggests that either the subjects name was changed legally or that the subject adapted a stage name or a professional name that they were known by.

In the case of the fictional character of 'Don Draper', this man is using the name of a dead man, and has not legally changed his name to Donald Draper, nor is he using the name simply for business uses.

In a real life case that is a parallel to Draper's story, Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter used the name 'Clark Rockefeller' and that is what the entry is entitled. However, the opening sentence is as follows: "Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter (born February 21, 1961) is a German con artist who went by the alias Clark Rockefeller." and not "Clark Rockefeller (born Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter).

To state "born Richard Whitman" at the opening of the Draper entry is deceptive, even though it is, by definition, factual.

I admit that my phrasing "also known as", while also accurate, does not flow well. If you can write a new sentence that takes into consideration the point I made, I think that would be a good compromise.

I do not want to engage in an edit war, and would greatly prefer that we come to a consensus about this.

I recently removed the material you re-added here. This appears to be at best a trivial anecdote, and adds little value to the encyclopedia. At worst it is simply incorrect, or of such minor use that it misleads the reader. If this cannot be attributed to a reliable source, it should be removed. Hi Acsenray, I understand this is the French word for the English word Brand. Sixty or seventy years ago it was used for very particular brands of European cars, perhaps partly as a mark of excellence.
It seems to have been revived by some Wikipedia editors but used quite differently.
Does its new use simply mean brand or is there now an extra useage I am unaware of?
