Kinetics[edit]

Hi,
I stumbled upon your question (at Talk:Kinetics) about the rate of increase of the metallicity of the universe. There may be a term for this, but I would not expect it to be called 'kinetics'. The governing principles are entirely different. A chemical reaction occurs when reactant species come together, dissociate, and form some new species. The metallicity of the universe increases when stars form from gas clouds and begin to burn hydrogen at rates dictated by their respective sizes. I'll admit that you raise a thought-provoking analogy, but IMHO it's not good for anything more than idle musings. Thanks for the feedback! The most relevant article that I've found so far (just recently, too) is Nucleocosmochronology, which is still quite stubby. I have updated Talk:Kinetics accordingly. Note however that increase in the effective metallicity of the universe involves distribution processes such as novae, supernovae, and the ejection of planetary nebulae. Distribution processes must be taken into account along with production processes to account for the metallicity of new stars that form. --Eric Forste 08:00, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I started working on a rewrite of history of science and technology (the discipline) at User:Fastfission/HST, but I got side-tracked and never got back on it. Not sure if that is of any use to you, though. I'm still not sure how one ought to divide up the question about whether it is about the discipline or about the content itself, but I think there's got to be some intelligent distinction... hmm.
I've looked a couple times at the Japanese atomic program article and it's so far off kilter that it's hard to imagine how to get it back without scrapping most of it. Which I might just end up doing. The entire thing is based on one bogus 1946 report (the only link to which is on a conspiracy theory website) and a more recent book of dubious merit which has decided to declare the report accurate, both of which are wholly in the face of all other nuclear historiography. Even the most rigorous NPOV attempts are going to privilege the conspiracy theory with more merit than it is worth—it ought to be regulated to a paragraph or two at the end of an article on their abortive program. I might try to do that in the next few days, while I have some time.
I don't know a whole lot about the history of chemistry, I'm afraid, except the development of 20th century chemical conglomorates in Germany, and other 20th century stuff, but I could try to work that in somewhere there... anyway, it is nice to find someone else interested in doing the grunt work on this sort of stuff.

Bombay High Court[edit]

Sorry to not get back to you sooner on this, I've been thinking about it a bit. I think you're probably right. I was hoping that this weekend I might get a chance to add some more to those other sections but I'm not sure I'll be able to. I decided that Historiography of science was probably the best title for it at the moment as it doesn't have a lot on technology in it (and I think that might be hard to incorporate to the current narrative). Uh-oh, EFI-oh[edit]

Hey EF -- I would like to take out that bit about EFI at the beginning of the article. Here's why:

1. I think I phrased it in the right way: EFI does not condemn homosexual people, but does condemn homosexual actions. I know, I know, this is total BS, but technically it is true, and it is a substantive difference. Basically, what I was trying to say there is that there is no group that has said something like "homosexuals are evil". Even EFI has not said "homosexuals are bad people", indeed, the only thing I could find explicitly about EFI and homosexuality is that thing I linked about Earlham college, and, yes, it sucks, but I think it's a stretch to call it a "condemnation of homosexual people."

Basically, OK, I don't know anybody in EFI, but I am worried that we are casting too negative a light on them.

2. If that doesn't work for you, I would suggest that we cut that sentence all together. One main reason is that I think it's important for people to have to wade through all the disclaimers first so that they can see the complexity of the issue.

Let me add two other things: if you have any more info -- espeically web links -- on EFI and homosexuality, they would be very helpful. The other is that it seems very unlikely to me that anybody at EFI would assent to the statement "I outright condemn homosexual people". I just can't believe it. Final: hi again. OK, I did some pretty intense googling, and found a really disturbing statement on EFSW (EFI's Southwest Yearly Meeting.) Apparently, homosexuality -- the whole kitten-kaboodle -- is not only condemned, but it is grounds for termination of employment. EFSW is definitely a large, mainstream, etc. etc. Man, I am surprised. I've added this info into the article, and I've decided to take out the sentence in question, leaving the specifics for later. Re: your comments. Thanks -- I agree. I've seen mention that some Friends groups are renaming themselves and adding the word "Evangelical" as a way to signal their opposition to gay marriage (and other causes they consider "too liberal".) I have the feeling that even EFI is fragmented about the issue of homosexuals. In particular, I find it telling that there is not one reference to "homosexual", "homosexuality" or "gay" on the EFI website, and the references to "marriage" on the site don't discuss sexuality even in a sort of coded way. My personal feeling is that everyone is kind of lying low a little and trying to chill things out, while some yearly meetings within EFI and FUM are taking a stand either way. I don't have any such suggestions yet, because the english wikipedia articles are better than any textbooks I have here where I live, and I'm still absorbing the former. If I have changes, I'll either make them if I'm confident, or discuss them with you if I'm not. If you have any interest in modifying User:Arkuat/Taxonomy in order to bring it into better correspondence with well-established research, that would please me, and since I try to use that thing to guide my reading (and sometimes edits) of articles about living (and extinct) taxa on our wikipedia, that is what I'd do with your contributions. But the question this brings up for me is this: where is the main namespace article for these kind of collaborative edits? Pallas[edit]

Hi Arkuat/Eric,

Concerning minor planet Pallas: it is typically depicted as non-spherical, and roughly football-shaped (N. American football, obviously). Wikipedia lists its dimensions as 570×525×482 km, which is egg-shaped rather than spherical. Ceres is the only asteroid which is known to be round. Documentary hypothesis[edit]

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. My view is that the documentary hypothesis article should cover the subject in historical format - the present format. This is by no means the only possible approach, of course. I guess the Wellhausen version of the hypothesis bulks so large because he's such a dominant figure in that history. But of course you're right, there were then and are now other ideas on the number, origins and nature of the sources. If you feel those alternatives aren't well enough covered, by all means feel free to make your own input. I certainly don't try to establish ownership over the article.
