CMNI in NANP?

The list of countries you added to North American Numbering Plan includes CMNI ... it's not on the member list on NANPA's Web site, as far as I can tell; in fact, I can't even figure out what country/region/territory it is! Could you enlighten me? - DavidWBrooks 16:55, 12 Jan 2004 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the quick response. Do you know what CMNI stands for - what it is? I'm stumped. (Just curious.) DavidWBrooks 02:18, 13 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Washington, DC

I noticed that you were the one who added the picture of the flag. Thanks, but since both the flag and the page have a white background, some kind of marking of the flag's border would be nice, if there's a way to do it. I'm not fluent in the image field. As is, the image is kind of confusing. Meelar 05:32, 14 Jan 2004 (UTC)

  • Wow, that was quick. Thank you. Meelar

East Texas Article

I am curious as to the the meaning of your comment on your first edit of the East Texas article. Where did the article, or I, imply or state that Marshall was the most influential city in East Texas? - JCarriker 2:35, Jan 24, 2004 (UTC)

I have added a response to your post on my talk page. I posted on my talk page rather than yours because of it's length.

Mohammad Mandela?

Can you explain why you made all the pages related to Mohammad Mandela? No google hits for that term. Fuzheado 03:53, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I just picked up on that sentence, but am not sure of its accuracy. Can you provide a reference? I tried Google searching for it and no results for it. Fuzheado 04:05, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)
It seems like such a major (and surprising) point, that I've deleted it for now since we cannot find positive proof. I think it may have been mixed up from some other bio. Thanks. Fuzheado 05:51, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Dear Whisper: Hi! I just read your comment on Puerto Rico. While Puerto Rico is in free association with the United States, key word here being with, whether Puerto Rico is part of the USA or not is so highly debatable, we'd have to look into everything basically.

Most Puerto Ricns, including many among those who vote for the statehood party (and this position I cant explain myself, cause it has no logic) do not identify themselves as American but Puerto Rican. Whether Puerto Rico is the USA or not, it really depends on the person's point of view as shown by votes during the 1990s to see peoples preferences, although it shall be said that the free associated state's ideals won by close margin on those two convocatories.

I myself consider my nationality to be Puerto Rican, not American. The pride of being Puerto Rican is just like the pride of Mexicans, for example, to be born there, British, etc etc.

We have sovereignity in the sports world, and our government can choose which companies to work with but heres the glitch, again as so far as those companies arent from Cuba, Iran or American enemies, because, like you said, Puerto Rico is still tied to the states by a paper, contract or whatever the Jones act was. Puerto Ricans also can execute their own laws, although the police department works as a state department not a country department.

Puerto Rico's governor is ensured Secret Service watch when visiting the United States, just as any president from another nation, although partly because the President recognizes that the security of Puerto Rico's governor is at risk because of all the Puerto Ricans who might be potential supporters of other parties and thus, enemies and who live here in the USA.

Most Latin American Presidents, when speaking of Puerto Rico, refer to it as a pais (country) rather than a state of the union.

See, although we are an area of the United States, we arent the United States. Or so say many. This is one of the most difficult, and debatable, things to talk about in history, other than the notorious robberies in some boxing matches that were closefights and people argued for decades who really won, other than Maradona's hand of God and war talk...lol!

I dont know. Myself, Id like to see one encyclopedia that recognizes Puerto Rico as a country rather than a state. But then again thats my own POV and like I said, its highly debatable. Figure this one out: While Puerto Ricans fight for the USAin military combat, Puerto Ricans (and some international figures) drove the military out of Vieques! So the debate is one that goes on and on and on and on...

Well, that said thanks for your letter I enjoyed your point of view and I hope we can collaborate on more projects soon!

God bless you!

Sincerely yours, Antonio Coqui Boricua Martin

Paris Hilton

My main complaint with the Rotten link is that it's kind of flimsy about actually relating to the topic. The whole article is about the tape, and really doesn't inform the reader about anything revolving Paris that wasn't already clarified in the article, unless you consider a review of someone's sexual performance a reference. I feel it qualifies more as simple gossip, which for the most part really doesn't belong on Wikipedia. Sarge Baldy 21:46, Feb 21, 2004 (UTC)

Whisper, I hate to be unpleasant, but if you want to edit articles such as History of the Middle East, you are really going to have to improve your English (if it is not your first language) or your English expression (if it is). Quite apart from the fact that I didn't agree with the way you were editing the article, your edits were consistently ungrammatical and poorly expressed. Adam 08:49, 7 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Now the links have all crept back, one by one. Please consider reverting your main page edit. Osaka, Osaka

Since Ôsaka is spelled おおさか in Japanese and not おうさか, I'm pretty sure that Ousaka is wrong no matter what romanization scheme one uses. A quick google search reveals that "ousaka" gets 4,000 hits to "oosaka"'s 28,000. Unless you know something I don't, there's no reason to list ousaka as an accepted spelling. Words with o-u spellings in Japanese can be romanized to "ou" or "oo" depending on one's scheme, but o-o words should only be romanized to "oo."

Emirates A340 pic

Hi! This matter is not hugely important but I did wonder why you added a copyright pic (Emirates) to the Airbus A340 article that already contained four public domain pics. Three of them happen to be my own photographs taken at London (Heathrow) but that?s not relevant. Copyright photos are not a good idea if PD pics are available because it is possible that one day all copyright pics will be removed and only PD pics allowed. Also four pics is quite enough for users with slow connections.
I guess the photographer will be very offended if it?s removed so I?ll leave it there, but be aware that someone else might take it away one day. Best Wishes, Adrian.
PS I've just noticed that the size of the Emirates pic is 251K, much too big for a slow connection, it's really important to keep to 100K or less. The loss of quality won't be noticeable.

Greater Los Angeles Area

WhisperToMe, I'm planning on removing the map you added to Greater Los Angeles Area. It's a nice map and I appreciate your effort, but it seems to be misleading people. Greater Los Angeles Area is not an official government term. I see that until 2003 the US Census Bureau designated a Metropolitan Statistical Area with those five counties, but it's not the same as the article's title. Maybe a map of California with a fuzzy blob around Los Angeles would be more illustrative. Or perhaps a satellite photo highlighting the urbanized areas (The photo at Los Angeles doesn't cover quite enough territory). Mackerm 22:01, 22 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I did notice that some Wikipedia authors have written down that definition, but it's not an official term, and I've never heard it used that way (and I live here). It looks like somebody went to the United States metropolitan area page and put "The Southland" in the "other names" column for convenience, and others thought it was synonymous with the Census statistical area. The Census bureau's policy is to follow county boundaries, but really, most of the area is totally unpopulated. Nobody would say the desert just west of Las Vegas is part of Greater Los Angeles. Mackerm 22:48, 22 Apr 2004 (UTC)

People call it all sorts of things, and have defined it in all sorts of ways. Take your pick. But by using the same sort of map used by the List of counties in California it looks like an official designation, which it isn't. Mackerm 23:08, 22 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hi. What do you know about the Black Prairie in Texas? Danny

Hi, I was just checking the additions you made to the city pages for Pakistan. I was sortof thinking that putting info solely on terrorist activity would seem right on those pages since such info should be part of the current events section of the whole wikipedia. Because this method would subliminally make it seem as if these cities are harbouring terrorists.

Point taken and accepted. Although I might add a bit to that page as well. aala hazrat 09:44, 2004 Apr 25 (UTC)

Given the huge number of counties you're going to be dealing with (250?), maybe List of schools in Texas should be broken down into separate pages for each county, such as List of schools in Dallas County, Texas. The main page can link to the others, and could also explain the systems of organization across the state. MisfitToys

Regarding your note to me on List of accidents and incidents on commercial airliners grouped by location - True, that page lists locations; but you have to keep going back and forth between lists on different pages if you're not precisely sure which event you're looking for. The list by locations doesn't show years, and the chronological list doesn't note locations. MisfitToys 01:05, Apr 30, 2004 (UTC)

Shock sites

Are you sure that we really need all that much information on "Last Measure"? There's considerable debate on whether smallish websites really deserve articles, and this seems like a one-person job (Ytmnd got the thumbs-down just now), and the information seems to be added by the person who wrote it, to boot. (I removed the stuff about WP's images on the basis of Avoid self-references) Paullusmagnus 01:52, 7 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't realize you had written that part of the article. I noticed that the person who claims to have written the popup-blocking-bypassing for that site had edited that page, but I wasn't able to quickly figure out when it had been added. Anyways, do we really need to know all that information? I know that Wiki is not paper, but it seems to be cluttering up the article. I think that mentioning that it uses Javascript to wrest control from the user and accomplish various annoying things would be enough. At least we don't need to know what it displays for the credits, and what the source code says about its development. Paullusmagnus 02:18, 7 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Could you mention it on WP:VP? I am going to sleep now. Paullusmagnus 03:28, 7 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

New York County, etc

Huh? Others have said that "New York, New York" is used only to refer to Manhattan. Brooklyn is "Brooklyn, New York", and Queens (and maybe the Bronx) has various different post office city names used. john 05:18, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're assuming that postal addresses in the nineteenth century conformed to present day usage. At any rate, nobody has said that "New York, New York" refers or referred to New York County. We've said it refers to Manhattan. john 05:24, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Here's what the City of New York article has to say:

In 1898, New York City took the political form in which it exists to this day. Prior to 1898, New , New York City took the political form in which it exists to this day. Prior to 1898, New York City consisted of Manhattan and the Bronx, which was annexed by the city from southern Westchester County in two separate actions: the western portion in 1874, and the remaining portion in 1895. In 1898, a new municipal government, originally called Greater New York, was created by new legislation. It was divided into five boroughs. The Boroughs of Manhattan and The Bronx covered the original city and the rest of New York County. The Borough of Brooklyn consisted of the City of Brooklyn as well as several municipalities in eastern Kings County. The Borough of Queens was established in western Queens County, and covered several small cities and towns, including Long Island City, Astoria and Flushing. The Borough of Staten Island contained all of Richmond County. All municipal governments contained within the boroughs were abolished. A year later, the area of Queens County not contained within the Borough of Queens became Nassau County. In 1914, the state legislature created Bronx County, shrinking New York County so it contained only Manhattan. The five boroughs are now considered to be generally coterminous with their respective counties. However, there are some small exceptions, some of which remain a legal mystery, such as Marble Hill

So it would appear that New York City and County were coterminous until 1898, when King's County, Richmond County, and part of Queen's County were incorporated into the city, but not the county. The remainder of Queens County was split off into Nassau County in 1899, and Bronx County was separated off in 1914, to make for the somewhat less anomalous situation we have today. john 05:34, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but New York County also ate up the Bronx, which had previously been part of Westchester. john 05:36, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I hope I'm not telling you what you already know, but:

  • New York, Kings and Queens counties are original counties of New York Colony, predating the revolution. New York County was Manhattan Island, Kings County same as today, Queens County was approximately (since there's even now some dispute as to the exact border) the rest of Long Island that was originally part of New Netherlands colony. The originally English (never Dutch) part of Long Island is Suffolk County, also predating the revolution.
  • When New York City began to annex parts of Westchester County in the 19th century, these were incorporated into New York County.
  • When "consolidation" created the City of Greater New York on January 1, 1898, New York City annexed Richmond, Kings and part of Queens County. A year later, the unannexed part of Queens County became Nassau County. So now NYC consisted of the totality of four counties, but five boroughs.
  • In 1914 "the other shoe" dropped and the Borough of The Bronx became Bronx County, so all was nice and neat: five counties = five boroughs. Except for Marble Hill. Oh, well. -- Cecropia | Talk 15:37, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Why not try to give me the benefit of the doubt? I wrote the vast majority of content in that article, so why not try talking me about what which pics supplement the article best and where, as opposed to trying to dictate terms to me and push me into an edit war? 172 17:07, 15 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, let me explain why I'm reluctant to see the addition of more and more pics. Before the recent rewrite, the old was plastered with way too many pics, often with no relationship to where they were situated in the article. I'm sure that if I stand back and do nothing, this'll happen again.

Anyway, I want to cap the number of pics at eight (preferably less). FYI, here are the ones I consider essential to a biographical entry: the portrait pic, Saddam with Bakr, Saddam with Cuellar, Saddam on the streets of Baghdad, Saddam apprehended, and Saddam with Rana.

IMHO, Saddam with Chirac, and Saddam with Rumsfeld are more or less miscellaneous fillers of white space. I am willing to concede the removal of either of these two pics (or both) in order to make way for the latest pic you want added. 172 17:27, 15 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

About Korean Romanisation

Hi, I have noticed you have edited various Korean articles, and indicated the forms used for the entries were McCune-Reischauer Romanisation forms. That is almost never true. Most entries are under the form that's most widely used, such as Syngman Rhee, which most often do not use any regular romanisation system (the MR form would be Yi Sŭng-man). I'm just letting you know so that you don't keep on making mistaken edits. Thanks, --Iceager 09:26, 16 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Metropolitan Areas

In what sense is largely rural Cecil County, Maryland in the Delaware Valley metropolitan area? I can tell you, being currently in Philadelphia, that it is not discussed in the local news at all, and that very frequently the Delaware Valley area is called the "tri-state region", those three states presumably being Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Furthermore, being from Maryland, I'd add that there was no particular sense of Cecil County being in the Philadelphia metropolitan area (although I'm from a part of Maryland fairly far removed from there). Furthermore, Cecil County is not, in fact, in the valley of the Delaware River. john 02:51, 18 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Then we should say that it's in the U.S. Department of Labor's Consumer Expenditure Survey for Philadelphia. They like to include rural counties in those things so the federal government can save money on COLA for federal employees living in the more expensive parts of the region. I think it's POV for us to say that this actually makes these counties actually part of said Metropolitan areas. john 03:07, 18 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be correct. I should not have taken the action I did. Have you already restored it? At any rate, I do think that this is a problematic convention. Why not use the official terms Metropolitan Statistical Area and Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area, which are unambiguous and NPOV, instead of the much more ambiguous "metropolitan area"? john 03:11, 18 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Athens

You say: "The German Map of Athens shows how Athens was laid out in 1888, in the Ottoman times, before the large city growth happened."

I say:

  • No it doesn't. It's a map of Ancient Athens. Look at it more closely. Do you see Syntagma Square? The Royal Palace? A railway line? No. You do see the Long Walls, which were demolished in 404BC.
  • The Ottomans departed Athens in 1832. By 1888 Greece had been independent for 60 years.
  • You need to realise, darling, that you are not the world's greatest expert on every subject under the sun. I realise this is difficult to grasp at 15 or whatever you are, but it is a fact nevertheless.

Southwest Asia

I'm quite aware that Southwest Asia and the Middle East are not the same thing. My point was that Southwest Asia is an idiosyncratic term that is not in common usage, and hence not appropriate for usage here. You can make up all sorts of arbitrary geographic classifications, but unless people start using them, they're not very useful. --Delirium 21:52, May 22, 2004 (UTC)

I agree, there should not be exceptions, and the term should be removed from the other articles you have inappropriately inserted it into as well. I am also not aware of any widespread usage that denies Israel is in the Middle East, as the term "Middle East conflict" is quite widely understood to refer to the conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors, whereas the term "Southeast Asian conflict" means nothing at all. --Delirium 21:56, May 22, 2004 (UTC)

The fact that two of you are hung up on idiosyncratic usage preferred by some geographers that has not gained widespread currency does not make that usage any more appropriate. Southeast Asia is very much a term in use, whereas Southwest Asia is not. --Delirium 22:02, May 22, 2004 (UTC)

I think the description of it at the eastern end of the Mediterranean sea is a fairly unambiguous and sufficient geographic description. I don't see the benefit of using another geographic term that is not commonly used. --Delirium 22:11, May 22, 2004 (UTC)

Stop Cramming Images Onto Pages

You need to stop cramming irrelevant photos onto pages. Each section should only have 1-2 photos and it should not exceed the dividing headers lines. I don't know why you are so intent on making a mess of pages by doing this. You really need to stop or you will be reported. ChrisDJackson 06:26, 3 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Dear Whisper: Hi! I am honored that you consider me capable of running a wikimedia chapter in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. Problem is.....although I still am proud of my being Puerto Rican and I favor Puerto Rican independency, I dont live there anymore. If anything, Im closer to Mexico than Puerto Rico, Im about a one hour and 30 minute drive from Sonoita, Mexico. Ive been there and to Puerto Penasco plenty of times..you just gotta love that Hispanic Pina Colada and those hot tamales and senoritas! LOL!

Ive tried to enlist the best possible talent for wikipedia here where I live, including boxing trainers, pastors, a future pastor, my pharmacist and even my personal doctor. History of the Middle East

Let me warn you, in the nicest possible way, that I put a lot of work into History of the Middle East, and that if you start making dopey edits to it like the one you just made, and like most of those you persistently made at Middle East, you will be buying into a big fight. I have no desire to have edits wars, but I will protect articles I have written against ignorant meddling. Just so we understand each other. Adam 04:44, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Please spare me the "you don't own the article" line. I know perfectly well how Wikipedia works. Constructive edits that add information to the article or improve it in other ways are of course welcome. But I know from experience that your edits rarely fall into those categories. Instead they usually reflect your semantic fetishes (like the Middle East / West Asia argument) or your ignorance (like your famous map of "Ottoman Athens"). Adam 05:26, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Of course I looked at the edit. I didn't revert it because it was your edit, but because it did not improve the article. "The modern Middle East" is a more concise formulation than "The Middle East in the 1990s and 2000s." It says the same thing in fewer words. But since it was your edit, and since I know from experience at Athens and Middle East what happens when you decide to "improve" an article, I issued my friendly warning. And when I look at your Talk page I see I am not the only person who has had experience of your little foibles: particularly stuffing articles full of unnecessary photos and stubborn persistence in making erroneous edits even when the error is pointed out to you. Of course I can't stop you editing History of the Middle East, but I will revert edits which are erroneous, poorly expressed and/or superfluous. Adam 06:11, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Sigh

Why do you persist with this ridiculous campaign to create redirect pages with every possible misspelling and misromanization you can think up? Seriously. I'd really like to know. It's absolutely pointless in the majority of cases, and potentially confusing in many cases as well, especially when it comes to people's names. Please stop. When it comes to things Japanese you have very little clue, as has been demonstrated time and time again. All you're doing is creating cleanup work for other people. Exploding Boy 06:42, Jul 5, 2004 (UTC)

See? It's not just me that has problems with you. Now, I know better than most that every active Wikipedia User manages to antagonise someone, but you manage to antagonise many people, and for the same reason - you rush in and make edits on subjects you don't know as much about as you think you do, and you won't listen to anyone who tells you different. For the record, I don't think you are uber-stupid. You are in fact obviously very intelligent. But you are uber-young, and like many highly intelligent young people, you think you know everything. Well, you don't. Believe it or not, as an ex-precocious brat myself, I have some sympathy for your position, and I don't want to put you off contributing. But the fact is that precocious brats get slapped around a lot until they acquire some judgement to go with their brains. Adam 08:09, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

To be fair, I think it's much better that User:WhisperToMe create these redirects than to put the same information in the first paragraph of each article. At least the redirects don't cause any harm (apart from making the "What links here" a bit less useful). Gdr 16:57, 2004 Jul 5 (UTC)

Well at least that I agree with. On the other hand, it blows my mind when I see 9, 10...11 redirects for the same page, each with a slightly different misspelling or misromanization. I'm pretty sure "Zyunitiroo Koizyumi" would be a bit surprised to see his name spelled that way... Exploding Boy 23:42, Jul 5, 2004 (UTC)

You really should remove all of the red links for anything below the level of high school at List of schools in Harris County, Texas, the growing consensus on Votes for deletion is to delete elementary and middle schools, and if somebody sees those red links and starts creating article based on them, they're going to wind up on VfD. Japanese

Please, if you want to add Japanese to a page, ask someone who speaks the language to do it so we don't have to keep doing things twice. Your recent addition of "kōkōgakkō" was wrong. Exploding Boy 09:37, Jul 16, 2004 (UTC)

  • The edit history shows that was NOT my addition, but that of Cunctator's. WhisperToMe 09:55, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)
This just goes to show that you shouldn't be editing Japanese words -- make that words in any foreign language -- if you don't know the language. It's now taken three edits on the article page, plus five edits on talk pages -- a total of eight edits for what could have been accomplished in one edit by someone knowledgeable in Japanese, or two if someone had requested someone else do it for them. Exploding Boy 03:42, Jul 17, 2004 (UTC)

(In response to Whisper's comment about macrons vs. circumflexes) Um, no, it doesn't matter what sort of accent-mark Shonen Jump uses -- Wikipedia has standards on this sort of thing. Macrons are to be used in all articles. If the majority (or a significant minority) of people who know the words or names in question are familiar with the circumflexed form of the name, the article should include these; but when glossing actual Japanese text (as is done in Yugi Moto), Hepburn -- not popular -- romanization is to be used; and that means macrons. --Aponar Kestrel 20:53, 2004 Jul 26 (UTC)

When choosing a name for a page ask yourself: What word would the average user of the Wikipedia put into the search engine? -- from Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names)
However, article titles must use short vowels and omit apostrophes after syllabic n since macrons are difficult to enter and proper use of apostrophes cannot be expected from people not familiar with Japanese. -- from Wikipedia:Manual of Style for Japan-related articles
Titling an article 'Anna Kyôyama' conflicts with both of these guidelines; it should be moved over to Anna Kyoyama. And, ultimately, just because Shonen Jump uses ô instead of ō is no excuse for us to do likewise. Wikipedia is not Shonen Jump; while their romanization standard was no doubt selected for good and compelling reason, ours was as well, and it behooves us to adhere to ours just as they have to theirs. --Aponar Kestrel 21:20, 2004 Jul 26 (UTC)

And AGAIN

you've decided to go ahead, ingoring the lack of concensus, and add a link to Japanese language where one (three, actually) is not needed. Why do you insist on doing this? Why do you persist with this ridiculous campaign with the Japanese pages? Dozens of unnecessary redirects, links, romanizations... It has to stop. I think it's great you have an interest in Japan, Japanese, and Japanese things, but sit back and try to learn something before jumping in and messing with something you clearly know very, very little about. Exploding Boy 06:06, Jul 18, 2004 (UTC)

Sigh. Why wtm? Why? A basket (as in hell in a hand~) -full of new misromanizations and mistakes today. What drives you? Seriously? Why do you never stop? Even in the face of a rather glaring demonstration of your lack of knowledge. Is it your mission to be as irritating as possible? Exploding Boy 13:16, Jul 20, 2004 (UTC)

Ok, this one I'd like an explanation for. What is the purpose of the redirect pages "Yohko Ono," "Yôko Ono," "Ono Yôko," and "Ono Yoko"? Yoko Ono has been known by that name, with that spelling, for decades. Even in Japan she's known that way. Who, precisely, will benefit from the above redirects? Exploding Boy 16:46, Jul 22, 2004 (UTC)

Whisper? Ecchi. Go change it back. If you don't believe me, ask Google -- it goes so far as to say "Did you mean: ecchi" if you type in "etchi", which is pretty much final right there: it's an English word now, and you've gone and misspelled it in its entry. And, FYI, it does not mean "perverted" as you said in Yuri -- neither in English, nor in the original Japanese (which, oh yes, it is commonly used in). --Aponar Kestrel 04:12, 2004 Aug 6 (UTC)

Japanese spellings

I'm not going to be much help in this department. I left Japan five years ago and I've forgotten much of the grammar. I mean, I can still read and understand what I'm reading, but not full sentences and the like. With the romaji issue, however, I'm inclined to not agree with you. I'm sorry. Hyperwikification

Looking at your recent edits on the kanji page, I notice there are a few words you haven't gotten around to wikifying. But only a few. What's the point? adamrice 20:52, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Gosh, thanks ever so much for explaining to me the concept behind linking between articles. That explains perfectly why you've hotlinked an article about the Japanese language to the articles for East, Men, Women, etc. adamrice 21:12, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Actually, I had just checked your edits to that article myself and was thinking I'll have to go back and remove some of the unnecessary wikification. I've noticed this tendency to overwikify in many articles you edit. It's better to have too few than too many links within the article text, and not every date and word needs wikifying: it makes articles very hard to read. Exploding Boy 00:47, Jul 30, 2004 (UTC)

Yale Romanizaton of 主

Hi, WhisperToMe:

My deepest apologies for taking so long to get back to you...I am an avowed Wikipedia non-user now. Anyhow, the Yale Romanization of 主 would be "cw". So I believe "juche" would be spelt in the Yale system as "cwchey". I know, it looks awful: but the idea was to always have the same roman letter represent the same Hang(e)ul letter, regardless of pronunciation - at a time when there was no such thing as Unicode, and most data was still being entered on a typewriter. Kame-sen'nin

The apostrophe in "Kame-sen'nin" (sic) is superfluous because there is only one way to spell "senni" in Japanese (se/n/ni). Compare with "Junichiro", which could (in theory) be rendered "ju/ni/chi/ro" or "jun/i/chi/ro" and thus requires an apostrophe ("Jun'ichiro") to disambiguate. And the dash is just random. Jpatokal 00:38, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

No, you can't have "Senn" in Japanese. The syllabic n can only occur at the end of a word, so se/n/n is impossible.
Have you ever considered picking up an elementary Japanese textbook and studying it for a couple of years since you're obviously obsessed with the subject? Jpatokal 16:31, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Korean Romanization (Part 2)

Hi, WhisperToMe:

All your new redirects for McCune-Reischauer and Yale Romanizations are admirable. However, please be sure to get the spellings right before you create a new article. For example, you had "South Keyngsang" for Yale, but it should be "South Kyengsang." On the other hand, "Cyecwu" should be "Ceycwu." For McCune-Reischauer, you created "Yongchu," but in that system, consonant sounds are always modified to follow the pronunciation rules of Korea in such situations. So whenever you have the combination "ngch," it gets assimilated to "ngj," the reflect the way the pronunciation gets assimilated in Korean. For the M-R rules, please consult the external link at the bottom of McCune-Reischauer. You're doing okay with Yale, though, except for mixing up "ey" and "ye"! Anyhow, keep up the good work. --Sewing 04:33, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up! I'll look into that. --Sewing 04:46, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Oh, geez! It'll take forever to fix those problems in Wiktionary! Well, until then, here is a quick-'n'-dirty table of the 21 Korean vowels in the 3 major romanization systems. I wrote it up in my talk page, but I figure I'd add it here. (The order is Hangul -> Revised -> McC.-R. -> Yale):
ㅏ a a a (that one's easy!)
ㅐ ae ae ay
ㅑ ya ya ya
ㅒ yae yae yay
ㅓ eo ŏ e
ㅔ e e ey
ㅕ yeo yŏ ye
ㅖ ye ye yey
ㅗ o o o (another easy one...)
ㅘ wa wa wa
ㅙ wae wae way
ㅚ oe oe oy
ㅛ yo yo yo
ㅜ u u wu
ㅝ wo wŏ we
ㅞ we we wey
ㅟ wi wi wi
ㅠ yu yu yu
ㅡ eu ŭ u
ㅢ ui ŭi uy
ㅣ i i i
Now, how's that for personal service?  ;) Keep on trucking! --Sewing 05:41, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Adminship, Korean Stuff, and some Friendly Advice

Hi, WhisperToMe: Thanks for supporting me on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. --Sewing 16:44, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

P.S.: Check out Wikipedia:Korean article template. Hopefully, it should save a couple of keystrokes when creating or updating an article. We (i.e., Kokiri and I) are trying to add the See also: LOKRT by default to all Korea-related articles, plus assign the article to one of the Korea-related categories. Of course, the template is for generic Korean or SK subjects: for NK, reverse the order of Revised Romanization and McCune-Reischauer. (But of course, you knew that already...) --Sewing 17:42, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

P.P.S.: I have updated the link Wikipedia:Korean article template in the paragraph above. --Sewing 19:40, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

P.P.P.S.: Menchi suggested using a bot for a lot of what Kokiri and I are doing right now. Perhaps we could use a human-assisted bot (let's call it KBot) to:

  • Add an empty name table to each article that doesn't have one;
  • Add a ==See also==*[[List of Korea-related topics]] to each article that doesn't have a see also section;
  • Or just add the above link to the article's exisiting See Also section;
  • Assign one or more categories to the article.
  • For articles that already have tables, perhaps we could use such a bot to replace the existing HMTL syntax with Wiki-style "pipe" (|) formatting.

The problem is, I don't know much about bots, apart from what's on Wikipedia:Bots (which is more just rules and guidelines, than how-to). Do you have any information? --Sewing 20:05, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

P.P.P.P.S.: Looking over your talk page, I see you bring out the best in people!  ;) I personally am okay with your edits, so I just have a couple of helpful suggestions:

  • Forget about Yale romanization of Korean terms. Yale is only used by linguists. So it might be useful to use it on Korean-language-related pages (but be conservative with that: Korean suffers from too many competing romanization systems already), but don't use it anywhere else, including redirects: it's a waste of time.
  • I personally don't mind having the McCune-Reischauer spelling as a redirect to the Revised Spelling, or vice versa where McC.-R. is to be preferred. For personal names, it's a waste of time, due to the idiosyncratic way in which personal names are spelled. (And corporate names, too: nobody in the Western world - or even Korea - would enter "Samseong" for "Samsung.")... And it will help in Web searches: if the M-R spelling is in the article as "Ch'ungch'ŏng," it won't turn up in Google if you type "Chungchong," so having the article title "Chungchong" (so that it turns up in searches) as a redirect to the "Chungcheong" is probably not a bad idea.
  • BUT limit yourself to one redirect per article. So "Chungchong," but not "Ch'ungchong," "Ch'ungch'ong," or "Chungch'ong"!
  • My advice in your dealings with some other contributors: just do a bit of research before you make an edit. Even a couple of minutes searching on Google may suffice.
  • But above all, don't let them get you down. Think a bit more before you make some edits, but from what I've seen of your edits, you seem overall to be constructive contributor. --Sewing 20:32, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

9/11truth.org

Wow, are we the edgy stubborn nazi type! Really, what the heck is wrong with you? You write: "a campaign-site that states that the U.S. government was involved in a coverup involved 9/11". First of all, this is a completely crap sentence, I mean, "involved in a coverup involved 9/11" how can anyone write such utter nonsense? Secondly, what I keep putting next to the link (and I posted it in the first place) is saying WHAT the site is about, nothing more, nothing less. It is simple proven fact, and I'm really sorry that you can't seem to agree with fact, but that's not MY fault, it is truth, it has nothing to do with 'NPOV'. Read the site first, then play down your cheap-ass judgements on me. If you'd rather have it this way, then I will make it my life's task to change that line from each and every library and internet-café I can find. It's so childish of you to keep on pushing your will onto others. Go play with somebody else why don't you? I have better things to do. You are obviously incredibly bored or something.

Again, on http://www.911truth.org/index.php?topic=about it clearly states: "911Truth.Org is a campaign to educate the public about the Sept. 11th coverup"

now, if you can't read, that's not my problem. It's fact because it is fact, it's not 'POV'. And it's not funny either.

Hi again, Whisper: Okay, I made some minor edits today...but now you can enforce my Wikibreak.... ;) -Sewing - talk 01:45, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

On Quebec tv series

I am a hardcore separatist and I think we owe it to the truth to have Quebec tv series included in List of Canadian television series. This is an encyclopedia and decisions must be rational and reflect the reality. I totally disagree with a complete merge of the two articles however. In my opinion, the most intelligent way is to this:

  1. Have List of Canadian television series be broken down into provinces (the way it is right now), but have a Main article List of $province$ series under the heading.
  2. Include some of the most known shows produced in the province and have the whole list of all tv shows ever produced in the province in the main article.

Eventually, the list will get quite long and it will be more readable like that. The separation between English provinces and Quebec is also not accurate. Although culturally speaking it makes a lot of sense (indeed, Quebec has its own national culture), the facts are that some English language shows are produced in Montreal, Quebec, either for Quebec and the rest of Canada or for Quebec's English-speaking minority (CBC newscasts for exemple).

How about that? -- Mathieugp 15:05, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Congo Civil War

The civil war was going on at the same time as the Sept 11 attacks and therefore is a relevant comparison.--Xed 20:32, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Ugly American

1998, not 88. Your ignorance is baffling. 3 million people have died in the Congo Civil War and it was the most fatal war of the period. That's over over 1000 dead per day over 6 years. 3000 dead is very, very minor compared to that. The Congo Civil War is equivalent in casualty figures to a thousand 9/11s. Only the worst type of Ugly American would not want it mentioned. --Xed 22:29, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I didn't know that Xed was blocked at the time I made the RFC. Also, I let him know that he has an RFC on the talk page (and blocked people can still view Wikipedia) - In addition, he was blocked for 7 days, so can't we keep the RFC at least until he gets a chance to respond? WhisperToMe 22:17, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for asking. But well, first of all it's hardly my decision. Secondly, I'm not saying you did anything incorrectly in bringing the RfC in the first place (although I note that you didn't indicate when the RfC clock started running -- which I think was an honest mistake).
But I am not adverse to putting it on hold, I'm just adverse to anyone making determinations in the absence of Xed having had the chance to respond to your claims. My preference would be to see him unbanned and allowed to respond now, as it's also not too fair to him to have the RfC hanging out -- people will inevitably read it between now and then, and will inevitably form opinions on it. -- orthogonal 22:26, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Osaka Castle photo

Thanks for putting my photo into the Osaka Castle article. BTW, I think all the photos I've uploaded are in my user page User:Fg2. If you know of any articles that can use them, please feel free. Fg2 07:14, Sep 15, 2004 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay

Hi. Where did you get http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:FeminineTails.png ? Do you have permission from the author? WhisperToMe 06:05, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Well, first of all sorry for the big delay. What happened was, the studies started eating all of my time, and soon I forgot that I had that issue in my talk page. Not that I would have been able to answer it either. But I came again to the article about Tails and remembered it, so here I am.

Now, regarding the image, honestly I don't remember where did I get it from. It's been on my hard drive for at least two years, and I really don't remember. A friend of mine claims to be the author, but frankly, I don't believe him, since it's not his drawing style. And Google searches have proven totally useless - either that, or I don't know how to search. So I don't know anything, but I'll try to take the truth out of the aforementioned friend. --Fibonacci 03:13, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

State of limbo

I'm confused by the continuing existence of Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Xed. Since you were the one who placed the article there (conveniently right after I had been blocked and therefore was unable to respond for a week!), perhaps you can explain the situation. I feel like Terence Stamp in a Superman film.--Xed 16:35, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
