If you are here to ask about the length or inclusiveness of the article's list, or why certain people are not listed in it, please see the archived discussions "Citations Needed" and "Unsourced material in need of sourcing", which took place mainly in January and February 2010. A wide consensus, which included a consultation with Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, agreed that any addition of a person to the article must be accompanied by a reliable, verifiable source that with a properly formatted inline citation where that person's name appears in the list. Merely wikilinking to that person's article is not permitted, nor is leaving a cite in a bulleted list of sources at the bottom of the article. The uncited entries that were in the article prior to that discussion were moved to a subpage. Editors who wish to complete the article by adding missing suicides are encouraged to look through that list, find appropriate sources, and add them back into the article with the proper citations.

Should every single documented suicide be included?[edit]

This list is nowhere near an accurate list of suicides. At first I thought perhaps it's a list of only famous suicides but there are many who weren't famous. In 2020, 45,979 died by suicide in the United States alone. If there is going to be a page in Wikipedia titled "list of suicides" it should be an accurate depiction of how huge of a problem suicide is by including all suicides. Unfortunately, the list would probably still not be accurate since most suicides aren't even reported. This is not doing anyone any service, making people ignorant of a giant issue leading to stigma and shame that plagues the suicide loss survivors. This page is an insult to every single one of us, and it doesn't honor any of these people who lost their lives and whose families continues to suffer. Take this page down.

Any list on Wikipedia includes only those who are notable by Wikipedia standards (i.e. there is an article about that person). It is impossible for any list to be comprehensive. @Crazyinok82: Welcome to Wikipedia, Crazyinok82. I hope I can explain some of the policies and guidelines governing hte inclusion of content on Wikipedia.

First, the test used by editors to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article on Wikipedia, is called notability. You can learn more about this guideline at Wikipedia:Notability. The part of this guideline that governs biographical articles of people is at Wikipedia:Notability (people).

List articles on Wikipedia are sometimes restricted to entries that have their own article, like List of suicides, List of breakout characters, List of people from New York City, etc., and sometimes are not. Those of the latter type include List of victims of the September 11 attacks (A–G). Which entries go into a list-type article is determined by different criteria. One is sourcing. Wikipedia requires that the material in its articles be accompanied by reliable, verifiable (usually secondary) sources explicitly cited in the article text in the form of an inline citation, as explained here.

Because approximately 1.5% of all deaths worldwide are by suicide,[1] which is roughly 12 per 100,000 people,[2] this would mean that any such list article would have to include 960,000 people for one year alone. Maintaining such an article, and ensuring citations of reliable sources for them, much less for every year, would obviously not be feasible. In addition, that is not the role of encyclopedias. If there were a reference source for such a thing (and I'm not certain that there is), then it would be some type of index or almanac, which again, is not what Wikipedia is, as Freshacconci touched upon above.

Wikipedia does maintain an article on suicide, which is where I got the above figures on. Those who wish to educate themselves on the topic can go there. To argue that learning about the statistics with a Google search, or the Wikipedia article on suicide, is not a reasonable way to be informed of the topic, and that not including 960,000 people people in a list article in some way "makes people ignorant" of the phenomenon is a rather bold accusation to make, one that doesn't seem supported by evidence or reason.

As to whether choosing not to include a million people, complete with citations, is an "insult", well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But Wikipedia does not exist in a vacuum. At the end of the day, it is an encyclopedia, and not a memorial, so with all due respect to the victims of suicide, and their surviving loved ones, it is not this site's accepted role to "honor" them. Its policies and guidelines are generally intended to reflect the principles of writing good encyclopedias, and I'm not aware that the standard you insist upon is found in any other reputable encyclopedia, such as Encyclopaedia Britannica.

I'm genuinely sorry for the trauma you have suffered by the loss of your loved one. But while I'm not an expert on dealing with grief, I imagine that any prescribed approach to addressing the pain suffered by you and others like you means accepting the reality of what has happened, which is ultimately a question of personal responsibiity. Going onto an online encyclopedia to claim that those editors attempting to maintain it in good faith are "insulting" you and making others "ignorant" for not including every single suicide is not, in my opinion, the best approach to this. Alphabet Search[edit]

What happened to the Alphabet search function at the top of the screen, one used to be able to search by A B C etc. and it would take you to the names starting with the letter, is there a reason why it this function was removed? RomanGrandpa (talk) 17:36, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
