Pronounciation[edit]

When I asked Cambridge how adding the ar affects the pronunciation, they said, "Yes, the r is pronounced as another syllable -- spelt in modern Icelandic -ur for this reason." --kwami 05:35, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Since adjectival forms in English are usually based on the root of the word rather than the nominative form (compare Iris/iridium, Venus/venereal, Mars/Martian, Pluto/Plutonian, etc.), the r would be dropped. 'Thryman' would probably be used, but *'Thrymran' is out. kwami 2005 June 30 06:47 (UTC)
Modern Icenlandic spelling -ur is not equivalent to Old Norse spelling -r, AFAIK. The -u- is a later development, and corresponds to Continental Scandinavian -e-, as in åker. --Njardarlogar (talk) 09:40, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
