Namespace[edit]

Shouldn't a page like this be in the Wikipedia: namespace? JYolkowski 22:49, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

It is just like other lists of countries — Instantnood 23:26, Jan 28 2005 (UTC)

Problem by Google test[edit]

The Google hits work for most countries, but it has a problem differentiating, say, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, and the Netherlands and the Netherlands Antilles, where one would become a subset of another. — Instantnood 23:26, Jan 28 2005 (UTC)

England, Scotland, Wales[edit]

Not at present included in the "United Kingdom" count. Next time?? Robin Patterson 23:32, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Reduction in number of hits[edit]

There is an overall reduction in the number of hits for most countries since the page was first set up. Is the Google figure inaccurate? Rather than using Google is there a way of using the Wikipedia database directly for the number of hits? Alan Liefting 20:55, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hong Kong[edit]

I have added the terms Special Administrative Region to the list for Hong Kong, as it is a part of China, which is already listed. In fact, China in the list already refers to two different things. SchmuckyTheCat 00:57, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Also, reverts are NEVER MINOR EDITS. Please stop your subterfuge! SchmuckyTheCat 00:59, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps we should just rename this page as "List of geographic entities by coverage"? lol.--Huaiwei 15:29, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Could you tell the differences between the words "country" and "sovereign State"? — Instantnood 15:59, Mar 22, 2005 (UTC)
"Geographic entities" sounds much less political wont you think so? ;) --Huaiwei 08:27, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Can you please tell the diffrences? — Instantnood 09:13, Mar 24, 2005 (UTC)

Taiwan[edit]

I have added Taiwan onto the list. I believe that a search with "Taiwan" would be more revealing to the extent of coverage of Wikipedia over this territory than a search with "Republic of China", which may give more coverage in mainland China. A careful explaination of the official political entity is added behind the entry for the sake of NPOV. I hope this edit would not be too much controversial.Mababa 05:56, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks Mababa. — Instantnood 10:11, Mar 24, 2005 (UTC)

Time to scrap this article?[edit]

This article was a bit of fun, but it was never encyclopedic. All the figures in it need to change every time Google updates its index. I suggest we delete it now, rather than get into acrimonious debates.-gadfium 09:32, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps we have to add a time stamp for each entry, or to update the entire list periodically, say, every three months. — Instantnood 10:11, Mar 24, 2005 (UTC)
And for what purpose? That is the question to ask everytime we have cases like this.--Huaiwei 11:15, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Don't care either way. If this came up on VfD, I'd vote to delete just for the convenience of taking it off my watchlist. SchmuckyTheCat 14:02, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
It tells how countries are covered on Wikipedia. When a full list is compiled it will be interesting to see how an online Wikipedia is biased towards English-speaking or developed countries, and how the rest of the world are left out. If it happens to be the other way round, we would be able to tell Wikipedia has been a successful project bringing knowledges from different part of the world together. It also gives readers and editors some clue how much a country is covered, and perhaps to work on content with a certain country. — Instantnood 15:29, Mar 24, 2005 (UTC)
Wikipedia statistics on number of articles of different language version do emphasise how the proportion of the English language was declining, to less than 50%. A research on countries would be equally interesting. — Instantnood 23:11, Mar 24, 2005 (UTC)
Wow! Impressive! And how may I know does it address the issue over the multiple ways similar countries may be presented, and how different countries may use the same representations? If this page wishes to serve such a noble cause as above, surely it has too much inherent problems to come close to fulfiling its aims?--Huaiwei 22:09, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Maybe the list should search for "mainland China". That country sure does get a lot of attention. SchmuckyTheCat 22:25, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

figures[edit]

what is wrong with the figures? All the results are in the thousands or millions - United States from the link given gets 26.9 million, not 904! -- Astrokey44|talk 01:05, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think Wikipedia has grown in the last year. Who'd have thought that would happen? I'm nominating this page for deletion as it is so out of date and unmaintainable.-gadfium 05:55, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It may be unmaintainable but it is possible to keep this page up to date by some committed users. --Siva1979Talk to me 23:19, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
