Johnnie Walker Blue[edit]

Hi. I noticed your addition to the Johnnie Walker page. You stated that Blue Label is rumored to be about 50 years old. Now with blends isn't the age stated the age of the youngest malt and grain? It seems it would be nearly impossible for them to blend together numerous whiskies which were all 50 years or older. More likely, it seems to me, the oldest whisky in the blend is about that age. Certainly if they could attach a 50 year old classification to it, they'd make a pretty big deal over it. -R. fiend 03:41, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You did fine in your reply. No faux as or anything; that's just how it's done. Anyway, that's quite interesting, but I am slightly skeptical. Even 30 year old scotches are very rare, and since some is lost each year it is aged, we'd be seeing some very low casks after 60 or so. Is there any chane the guy said that the youngest malt whisky was pre-WWII? It's my understanding that when they put an age on a blend, even the grain whiskies have to be at least as old as the year listed. Unless Blue Label is a vatted malt (and I don't think it is), it will have a substantial amount of grain whisky in it. Now I'm far from an expert on the subject (I don't drink blends if I don't have to, though I can't always afford single malts), but I'd be surprised if anyone even ages grain whiskies that much. I doubt there's much call for 50 year old grain whisky, and blenders probably don't want to pay top dollar for such a grain, not when the point is that they're cheaper. This at least would explain why they don't advertize the age (I'm not buying the "modesty" thing; they don't seem to shy from superlatives in the booklet). Hell, if I were selling a scotch that old I'd write "50 FREAKIN' YEARS OLD! YEAH!" across the label. But I honestly don't know; I'm just conjecturing.
On another note, I think including the contents of the entire booklet is excessive, and may even have copyright issues (I'm not sure). How would you feel about selectively quoting the more important parts, perhaps with a bit of summary? I think it would help the article. -R. fiend 15:12, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
