The movie has been out for awhile and the numbers prove that the movie is no longer an "alleged" financial bomb. I think history has proven cause and consequence.

Critical response

Like most of the entries in the Olsen twins's filmography, New York Minute is intended to be a vehicle for the sisters. As such, it was met with what could be described as "anticipated criticism" on the part of both the media (with the exception of some teenage-oriented publications and websites run by fans) and critics. Some have argued that this would be backed up by the fact that the movie was unsuccessful at the box office (or a "bomb"). Among the most common criticisms is that the movie is a succession of clichés tied together by a weak script, in addition to oversensualizing the image of the sisters, allegedly in order to capitalize on the "frenzy" brought on by the twins' 18th birthday. Another criticism is that the movie features ethnic stereotypes of Indians, Chinese, and African-Americans. Additionally, many have pointed out that the movie, which takes place in New York City and which has "New York" in its title, was filmed almost entirely in Toronto Canada.

Notwithstanding the criticism in whatever valid points, one could argue that the movie was successful in its primary goal, since it did reach its target audience and helped further the image — and the businesses — of the Olsen sisters.

Trivia

Mixed martial arts fighter Matt "The Law" Lindland makes a cameo in one scene where he is driving a car and he makes a right turn.

New York Minute was the lowest earning movie of 2004 for films showing at over 3,000 theatres. It only made an estimated 14.1 million dollars at 3,006 theatres.

Bob Saget made an appearance as himself in this film. Saget, along with the twins, were in the TV sitcom Full House.
