Moved this to here, Ben Laoigh is a mismatch of the proper gaelic name (i.e., where it is now) and the anglo-version (Ben Lui). Grinner 11:20, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)

I reckon it ought to be "Ben Lui". The OS (who have been adding a lot of Gaelic names to their maps recently) only give "Ben Lui" on both the Landranger and Explorer maps. I haven't got any recent guidebooks to double-check, but I'd think that Common names and Use English apply here. Besides which all the incoming links use the anglicised form. The article would of course still mention the Gaelic form in the first sentence. -- Blisco 16:37, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Ben Cruachan

The Ben Cruachan page claims that at 1126m it is the highest mountain in Argyll and Bute, but if Ben Lui is 1130m and is in Argyll too, maybe that's wrong? MaherCoen 06:12, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Ben Lui is on the boundary of Argyll and Bute and Stirling (council area). From looking at the OS 1:25K map, it looks like the boundary doesn't exactly go over the summit, so the summit is is Stirling council area, not Argyll and Bute. I would estimate that that highest part of Ben Lui in Argyll and Bute is about 1115m, though I'm not sure how exact the boundaries and contour lines on the map are. Also note the boundaries of the current Argyll and Bute council area are not necessarily the same as the historical area/county of Argyll. So the summit might be in Argyll, but not Argyll and Bute? I've updated the page anyway, to specify Ben Lui is in Argyll and Bute, and Stirling.

FWIW, I've just checked Database of British hills. It says Ben Cruachan is the highest point in Argyll and Bute, but Bidean nam Bian is the highest point in the historic county of Argyll. --Vclaw (talk) 00:09, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
