Ownership[edit]

Setting aside the sovereignty dispute, is the legal ownership of the land known? Perhaps the Crown / Ministry of Defence? McPhail (talk) 13:46, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The answer would be that no part of the ocean floor has an "owner". There might be mineral rights or fishing rights. You could add shipping and over-flight to that list, but not ownership. You ask "is the legal ownership of the land known?" the answer would be that it cannot be owned, there is no ownership.

This all hinges on whether the ocean floor is legally different to an uninhabitable rock.

we can all have our opinions on that.

@Lugnad: - under Scots law, Rockall will have an owner. The planning permission associated with the installation of a plaque in 2010 will likely state who that owner is. I hope that is helpful. McPhail (talk) 09:51, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Contradictory intro[edit]

"Ireland's position is that Rockall does not even generate a 12-nautical-mile territorial sea for the United Kingdom owing to the UK's uncertain title to Rockall."

"The consistent position of successive Irish governments has been that Rockall and similar rocks and skerries have no significance for establishing legal claims to mineral rights in the adjacent seabed or to fishing rights in the surrounding seas."

This seems contradictory - the first sentence suggests that the Irish government accepts the principle that the owner of territory is entitled to a territorial sea but does not regard the UK government as the owner of Rockall, but the second sentence suggests that the Irish government does not accept the principle that the owner of territory is entitled to a territorial sea. Uninhabitable?[edit]

Would it be better to say 'uninhabited', as one person has already stayed there for 45 days, and Nobby Styles (G0VJG) is aiming to better this record at the end of May 23? 167.98.155.118 (talk) 10:09, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I imagine that,s to do with the UNCOSS. And it is fairly uninhabitable, AFAICS its so steep sided that beaching and keeping a boat there for food is impossible. One could argue that Antarctica is uninhabitable though not uninhabited. Jabberwoch (talk) 03:08, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that I would be better to say 'uninhabited'. While it is true that the islet’s steep sides and lack of resources make it challenging for long-term habitation, the fact that individuals have managed to stay there for extended periods demonstrates that it is not completely uninhabitable. The distinction between 'uninhabitable' and 'uninhabited' is significant, as the former suggests that it is impossible to live there, which is not the case. Therefore, in my opinion, using 'uninhabited' correctly indicates that, although possible, no permanent residents choose to live there. Utter Donkey (talk) 22:27, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Soon forgotten?[edit]

On 7 November 1955, J. Abrach Mackay, a member of the Clan Mackay, made a protest about the annexation; the 84-year-old local councillor declared: "My old father, God rest his soul, claimed that island for the Clan of Mackay in 1846 and I now demand that the Admiralty hand it back. It's no' theirs'." The British Government ignored the protests, which were soon forgotten.

Rockall Informations Emil Bergmann[edit]

Hello dear friends, Im Emil Bergmann (Callsign DL8JJ) I was on Rockall couple of days bevor and Adreian and I spend 3 nights and 4 days on Rockall and done HAM Radio operation worldwide. Please correct the informations abou me. I'm german citizenship and my main home is in Germany, so i was the accender and climber of the Rock and made it possible tand also Ham Radio operator. We used the callsign: MM0UKI and done wolrd record of connections 7227. Thats will be great and thanks in advbanced. If you need mor infos or questions, please let me know.
