Well, sorry. If you really, really think tables are good and well, you can still get the old version back by going to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Lino_Ventura&oldid=2258381 and editing that old version. However, tables are not good and well. Wikipedia is supposed to be editable even by people who don't know HTML, and frankly the source for your version of the page was pretty much unreadable for such a person. Use of HTML is considered harmful unless absolutely necessary, which I don't think it was in this instance.

(There is in fact a new feature which allows creation of tables without HTML, for which see m:MediaWiki User's Guide: Using tables. But they're still to be avoided, mostly, as it's still too complex.)

and speaking of it, I'm too old to get into fights again over the correct date & time formats, ISO being the obvious choice for anything scientific or internationally used

See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers), which states pages will be gradually made to conform with this guide. Though it does note that ISO may be accepted here too one day (but not yet...)

You may also wish to look up Wikipedia:How to edit a page for an introduction to wiki markup.

I am sorry if I was a bit rude in deleting the "damn HTML" :-/ Evercat 13:53, 30 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I think what you say is true, though it's a consequence of how Wikipedia does those bulleted lists: the * is just interpreted as a <ul> so e.g. the following have the same style:

  • These indents
    • done with HTML's <ul> tag
  • These indents
    • done with Wiki's * markup

According to #wikipedia, the old mailserver, Ursula, stopped working about a week ago and the problem wasn't picked up until today. It was restarted earlier and apparently had 97 queued messages. However, mail is now supposed to be going to the Zwinger server, so that would only have affected old mail that was waiting in the queue. I'm not sure if there's also something wrong with that one. I assume there is as I tried sending myself an email and nothing happened. Anyway, people are looking into it, or will be. :) Angela. 18:13, Feb 10, 2004 (UTC)

math[edit]

I will be glad to help you later tonight when I get home from work. --Ed Senft! 15:18, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I figured it out. Look at your playground. You need to put \mathsf in front. --Ed Senft! 15:18, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I dunno - which disambig style to use is a matter of taste. But it also depends on whether any one meaning is a lot more common, which in this case I think the insect is. Compare for example eagle, where we first describe the bird, and then describe things named after it. I think this is a good approach, but that's just my opinion. Evercat 13:57, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)

You asked about the shuttle image, here is the info from the CAIB report: 6.4.3 Special Still Imagery Analyses of Alleged "Lightning" Image. A still image taken from California was submitted to NASA by a member of the public. A superficial look at the image suggested that it might record an anomalous re-entry event that was claimed to be lightning striking the Orbiter. Our analysis suggested that the pattern was due to camera vibrations during a long-exposure

I hope this helps. --SheikYerBooty 19:48, Feb 21, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Omegatron - nice work on the gyrator. Would you mind telling me what software you used in drawing the circuit diagram...? Suggestion: Let's rename R1 > R0, because that's basically given, and R2 > R, leaving essentially C and R to play with. --Palapala 09:24, 28 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I used Klunky schematic editor. It is online at
http://www.qsl.net/wd9eyb/klunky/framed.html
Then I took the screenshot and edited it a bit to make it prettier. I also drew a bunch of pictures for opamp configurations, so I can make an article on that, but I left them on my work computer. What do you mean that R0 is given? - Omegatron
Oh you mean that the inductor you would want to simulate would already have the R1 defined? How about we name it R1 --> RL, like a real inductor would have it labeled, and then the other R2 --> R. By the way, one of those links has the opamp inputs inverted. Do you know if it makes a difference? It seems like it would... - Omegatron

Hi - I found the information here PMA 08:15, Feb 26, 2004 (UTC)

No i don't know whether there was an investigation sorry :(

I replied to you on my talk page - Omegatron

Did they send you an email or was it all over the phone? Secretlondon 22:46, Mar 1, 2004 (UTC)

Re "Strange Units" move: see Wikipedia:Naming conventions , the second and subsequent words of an article title should usually be lower case, so I moved it to "Strange units". I'm not sure where you saw the underbar. The actual URL for an article has underbars replacing spaces, so [[Strange units]] shows up in your browser's address field as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strange_units. My intention was only to put "units" in lower case. If the title is showing up as "Strange_units" anywhere within the actual text, I made a mistake somewhere.

I disagree with you on the question of removing the accurate values. I'm not sure whether this is because a) I have less of a sense of humor than you, or b) I have more of a sense of humor than you. Everyone has their own opinion on what is encyclopedic. I like the article, but I personally think it would be better without comments such as "The term gets its giggle value from..." and "probably being conceived after having had a couple, and seeing the light of day on a beer-mat." I also have a problem with removing accurate and relevant information from an article, even a light-hearted article. But this may be ego, having spent a good three minutes making the calculations and putting the values in.

But I will not revert those sentences again if you decide to remove the accurate values. It's a matter of taste. Dpbsmith 00:35, 4 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I didn't block / remove the image - I just tagged it. You need to make a link to a copy of the email giving permission (look at all the ones on Wikipedia:Imported pictures for a guide. Secretlondon 21:49, 4 Mar 2004 (UTC) eg Wikipedia:Pictures from snp.org and the details link.

Current Day variable[edit]

Not having a preceeding zero makes it consistent with our manual of style. For example, articles are titled 3 August, not 03 August. It also reduces confusion with years as 03 is more likely to be confused with 2003 than just 3 would be. I expect that because of these reasons, people would be adverse to changing it anyway. If you want to get involved with the programming side you should read the Wikitech-l mailing list if you don't already and there's quite a lot on Meta aimed at developers. Tim Starling was trying to recruit new developers on the mailing list, so you might want to talk to him. There's also a developers' IRC channel at #Mediawiki. Angela.

The relevant place in the source code to change would be Parser.php, line 871. However, please discuss this on the mailing list first. — Timwi 16:37, 5 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I'm just curious -- to which "James" patience were you referring on VfD? I just wondered if it was a reference to me (my first name is James) or someone else...call it a minor touch of vanity, if you will. :) By the way, you've been doing good work here, and I like your approach to things -- keep it up. :-) Jwrosenzweig 21:08, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Well, then, thank you for the compliment. :) I haven't felt very patient recently, but you've encouraged me that perhaps I've done better than I'd thought. I appreciate your letting me know. Jwrosenzweig 22:10, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)
