Sometime early in 2004, I made a dot-map (example) showing the location of my hometown: Apex, North Carolina. Then I decided, what the heck, since I've done that and have the graphics program open, why don't I make maps for every town in the county. That afternoon, I did about a third of the state and it didn't make any sense to stop there, so, like Forrest Gump, I just kept on running. Eerily enough, other people started running, too, and before long nearly all of the User:Rambot U.S. census location articles will have maps.

Remaining states with space-filling townships:[edit]

Because New England municipalities are "space-filling", dot-maps aren't exactly appropriate for these states

I live in Pennsylvania, and townships can for the most part be treated as towns. A dot map would probably be sufficient in most cases. I personally live in Aston, PA, which is a township, but everyone uses the shortened form of the name. Even if a township and the town center proper happen to not be the same, it wouldn't be a problem with the scale that the dot maps are using. — Ram-Man (comment) (talk) 16:30, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

Instructions:

    • Center a zoom that fully includes the 7 core counties (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington)
    • Highlight those counties with a darker shade.
    • Highlight Minneapolis and Saint Paul individually with a darker-er shade.
    • No labels are needed
    • Add political lines for MCDs in the 7-counties.
    • Ensure county outlines are thick enough to distinguish them from the cities and townships.
    • Add major interstate highways running through the entire map.
    • Add water bodies and rivers.
    • Shade leftover parts of Wisconsin a neutral (like grey). Would be helpful to have Wisconsin county lines in but not necessary.
    • Size it adequately no need to be big, its for Infobox purposes.

I am seeing the map above in my web browser. What browser are you using which will not "show" the map in the infobox? Or is the problem that various borders and highways are not visible? -- SEWilco (talk) 15:19, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Never mind Wilco, Elkman's doing it see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Minnesota#MSP map? My SVG output is not including lines, just the fill color. .:davumaya:. 15:43, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
