Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Transparent aluminum

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article consists of thirty-three words describing a fictional substance mentioned in one scene of one movie. Taco Deposit 02:44, Aug 16, 2004 (UTC)

  • It was one of the funnier scenes in the movie. "Hello computer." Redirect to Fictional chemical substance where it already has an entry. -- Cyrius| 07:09, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
    • My favorite line was when Spock (looking pretty freaky) and Kirk are on the bus in SF, and Kirk explains to a fellow rider, "Too much LDS in the sixties." Wile E. Heresiarch 01:58, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep - fixed article so that it's not just whimsy. There is in fact transparent alumina. And you should know by now anything related to Star Trek, Lord of the Rings or Pokemon is virtually undeletable in Wikipedia. :) Fuzheado | Talk 08:35, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
    • A grudging keep, but only as long as it makes clear that translucent alumina is NOT transparent aluminium. The latter, despite being merely a throwaway line in the film, seems to have become quite an obsession with a number of people, so perhaps we do need a short article stating why it is impossible. • Fuzheado's fix moved it to a weak keep, for me. I'm no fan of the Pokemen, but, honestly, an article like this (before the fix) is like an article on a single place the Pokemen visit. Geogre 12:52, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep, much improved. - SimonP 15:24, Aug 16, 2004 (UTC)
  • Redirect to fictional chemical substance. What's the big deal about "transparent alumina"? Rubies are transparent and made of alumina (aluminum oxide) with a minor impurity of chromium. What's more, every piece of aluminum exposed to the atmosphere is covered with "transparent alumina". I'm sure the folks over at the Fraunhofer Institute are doing something interesting, but it seems unlikely that the present description does them justice. Fwiw, Wile E. • Keep. I've decided I like this article after all. Wile E. Heresiarch 15:50, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • DAB the aluminum/alumina confusion, but keep the entry; the "transparent aluminum" concept, while fictional, is pretty well known & is referred to repeatedly in the series; it's reasonable for people to want to look up whether it's real, and to find out the difference between the fictional material and the similar-sounding real one. -FZ 16:08, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • This article now seems to be more about tranparent alumina, which I think deserves its own page. Move the information on it there (assuming it's not bogus), and if what's left at transparent aluminum is worthwhile keep it (I'll leave that decision to others). -R. fiend 16:13, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. I don't know if there's really enough here about transparent alumina for its own article. Maybe, for now, it's better off as a tagalong to transparent aluminum. I hold the latter to a lesser standard because it doesn't exist so there's not all that much more than can be said about it. JamesMLane 18:23, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. If transparent alumina isn't a substantial enough topic to merit its own article, it can't be the topic that will prop up transparent aluminum. If it is, then I would agree with R. fiend; it should be in its own article, where transparent aluminum could be mentioned. -- WOT 19:28, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep, at least until a suitable article at transparent alumina exists. And even then, who knows. Fictional materials that are notable still belong, and this is something that has apparently persisted, not only in science fiction (the Star Wars notion of transparisteel) but I'm sure a lot of people in real life have wondered, hey, maybe that could work. --Golbez 21:46, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep, by all means. 2000 Google hits [1]. Thank you to everyone who's collaborated on the rewrite. • Benc • 04:31, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Redirect after moving information elsewhere to some Star Trek article. Wikipedia is supposed to be an encyclopedia, not a dictionary of trivia. Jallan 14:28, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. No redirect. -- Decumanus 04:02, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • I think the content should be kept, but Jallan does have a point; unless someone can cite and add to the article some other fictional occurence(s) of transparent aluminum, the obvious redirect is to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home with the content relocated there. (btw, corrected plot summary.) Autiger 14:36, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. The information in the article should be merged with the article on the film (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home). The first paragraph is clearly information that is in that article; the second paragraph is useless speculation that is not encyclopedic; the third paragraph may indicate that the article should be a redirect. The entire second section belongs in article about the film. It largely repeats information about the film and all the new information should be in the film article nevertheless (or it's in fact not important enough and so wouldn't warrant an article anyway). I say delete because if there does indeed exist something that this article calls "transparent alumina", then this article should have information about that, or redirect to that, and the history warrants elimintaton. This thing has no business being a distinct article in the encyclopedia. - Centrx 21:12, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)
