Extinct animals[edit]

Hi, you seem to be tossing everything from the great auk to mammoths to dinosaurs into your new Category:Extinct animals — and I think a lot of that is already duplicated by the Category:Fossils (and its sub-cats, like Category:Prehistoric reptiles, and Category:Prehistoric mammals).

It's usually best to put something in the most specific category that applies (otherwise categories get overwhelmed by thousands of entries) so putting Category:Fossils into Category:Extinct animals should cover the really dead stuff. :) (See also: Conservation status and Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life if you haven't already). 68.81.231.127 18:05, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sources for List of the largest artificial non-nuclear explosions[edit]

Hello, good work on List of the largest artificial non-nuclear explosions, and thanks for the contribution. However, you did not provide any references or sources in the article. Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and as you might be aware there is currently a push to encourage editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. Can you list in the article any websites, books, or other sources that will allow people to verify the content in List of the largest artificial non-nuclear explosions? Favorite Songs[edit]

My survey has changed. I am now continuing my mission for the best songs, but now I am accepting all genres. I'm giving you a chance to revote for your top ten favorite songs of any genres (not just classic rock which is still the best). I've made a executive decision to keep the existing survey results and just add on to that with the new entries. My feeling for doing this is because classic rock is the most influential genre in music currently so it should be expressed more in the survey. Userbox switch[edit]

You are very welcome...though it does change the actual number of userboxes used...you now have only 40 instead of 42 userboxes. Also, I didn't see the time zone userbox that needed to be changed out with the new master template. You might want to take a look at it to see which options you wish to have. Bulleted list problem?[edit]

I have noticed that carriage returns in bulleted lists are currently being counted as separate lists when using templates. Below is an example.

In this list, the subitems (except the first) appears with two bullets (they weren't before). However, I can remove the superfluous bullet by removing the carriage returns:

It always happens to me on Firefox, and never happens to me on IE. The carriage returns in such a list are supposed to split it into separate lists from the software's point of view. (It also happens with the other sorts of lists, including definition lists (:) which are used on talk pages, but the effect is only obvious with bulleted and numbered lists.)
Some more examples:
An indented definition list
using double spacing (the HTML is wrong, but it looks reasonably right)
  1. A numbered list
  2. using single spacing
  1. but with a double space before this line
  • A bulleted list inside a definition list
  • with a carriage return between each line
    • A bulleted list inside a bulleted list
    • with a carriage return between each line
This is a 10-times-indented with colons comment
                      • Indented 11 times with stars
Indented 12 times with colons
As you can see, there are all sorts of problems caused by these sorts of things; some show up in Firefox, and some show up in Internet Explorer. In some cases, the HTML is 'wrong' but all browsers I know of show it correctly anyway. --ais523 16:27, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
(If you're wondering; IE has a double-size break inside the bulleted list inside the bulleted list, and a really massive break before the 11-times-indented line; Firefox shows 11 bullets on the 11-times-indented line and 2 bullets on each of the bulleted-inside-bulleted lines, and both browsers go back to 1 for the third element of the numbered list.) --ais523 16:31, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Fixed. The template you were using contained an extraneous linebreak which caused the parser to decide each bullet was a separate list.
As for those other problems User:ais523 mentioned, I've never had much trouble as long as a few points are remembered:
  1. Don't put blank lines in the wikitext in the middle of the list.
  2. To insert a linebreak in the middle of a numbered/bulleted list item, use <br /> (without a linebreak in the wikitext) to avoid starting a new list item.
    Like this. Comments can be used to hide the wikitext-linebreak if you really want a wikitext-linebreak in there.
  3. When nesting, repeat the preceding formatting. So for the "10 colons, 11 stars, 12 colons" example above, this should "work":
This is a 10-times-indented with colons comment
  • Indented 11 times with stars
    Indented 12 times with colons

I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

Swanage Railway Works[edit]

Your tidy up the diagram on this article was fair enough mostly: however, the status of Swanage Railway works is not an error. Due to an inability to agree terms with local landowners the works are not at present connected to the railway. I've used a "Legende" marker for them to try to stop this understandable error from happening again (I did the same thing myself some time ago). Britmax 14:04, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just thought it made the diagram look untidy, but if the works aren't linked, then it's better to keep the diagram accurate and keep the works separated from the rest of the line. Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.
