Re: Delegate[edit]

Hi there Adambisset,

First of all, I just want to make it clear that I only moved the VfD header on the Delegate page to the top because that's where it's supposed to go -- beyond that, I had nothing else to do with the nomination, which User:Tempshill is responsible for. Basically, Tempshill is argueing that the Delegate article is just a "dictdef" or "dictionary definition." While a longer explanation is available in Wikipedia:Deletion policy and Wikipedia:Votes for deletion phrases, in a nutshell, it's felt that dictionary definitions belong in our sister project Wikitionary, and that articles in Wikipedia should at least have the potential to become a full article. Wikitionary already has an entry for "delegate" [1], and that's probably the reason moving the entry there wasn't suggested.

While discussion is still ongoing, people can give their opinion about if the article should be kept or deleted at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Delegate; if you'd like, I'd encourage you to briefly share your thoughts there - the emerging consensus seems to be that this should either be merged or turned into a redirect with Delegation. Expanding the Delegate article with more content may get people to change their minds or jump in and vote to keep. Don't forget to sign any comments you put on the VfD page with four tildes, like so " - ~~~~".

Also, although someone else already gave you a welcome, I'd like to do so myself - Welcome to Wikipedia. I'd like to offer just a few personalized pointers - first, I don't believe the message above included a direct link to the advice offered at Wikipedia:Be bold. Basically, don't be too worried as a newcomer about making mistakes - if you do make a mistake, it's likely someone will fix it. Which brings me to a (very) minor mistake. ;) As a general convention, we begin articles by putting the subject of the article in the first sentence in bold. I changed Hue and Cry to match this. Also, thank you for removing what look to me like vandalism to the Regional accents of English speakers article.

My user page says I'm on vacation, but I'll still be dropping into Wikipedia from time to time, so feel free to follow up with any questions you may have on my talk page.

- RedWordSmith 06:01, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi Adam -- yes, what RedWordSmith said. The article as submitted was a dictionary definition, whereas on Wikipedia we're really looking for encyclopedia articles. I thought about whether "Delegate" would be expandable to a longer article, with some history and analysis sections, and couldn't see it. If you disagree then by all means write the article that proves me wrong and fill out the page. (And go visit the VFD page and explain what you've done so people can retract their votes.)
By the way, the reason that your article got tagged right away is that new articles are a frequent source of patent nonsense, which is good to get rid of, so some people keep an eye on the Special:Newpages page. That's how I noticed Delegate. (To be clear, I'm not saying Delegate is patent nonsense. It was a well-written, well-wikified dictionary definition.)
Anyway, sorry for the rather rude response to your first new article -- hope to see you around. Tempshill 16:24, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hello, and thanks for the message. Yes, you will get addicted. Deb 15:03, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Dundee[edit]

Hi, I noticed in the process of editing the dundee article you removed the reference to the Harris Academy and I'm curious why. Having an article itself I feel it is necerserry that it is at least linked to from the dundee page Ydam 18:22, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Dundee page is looking good, I have been working on improving it for a while but I will just try and squeeze my stuff into the blanks that are left. Benson85 21:10, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah ha! A fellow Wikipedian in the Philosophy Department[edit]

Hi there. I thought I recognised the name Adam Bisset from somewhere! We have never met, but I am a student with the Philosophy Department too (just finished my degree, will be starting the MLitt in Continental Philosophy in September). Anyway, go well, my good man! infotainmentnihilist 16:30, 8 June 2006 (GMT)

Hi, I thought you may be interested in joining WikiProject Sex. It's an exciting new WikiProject which I'm sure has huge potential, but there's a lot of work to be done. So if you feel that you're up to it, please join! Atlantis Hawk 07:03, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've nominated List of ethnic group names used as insults, an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that List of ethnic group names used as insults satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of ethnic group names used as insults (2nd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of List of ethnic group names used as insults during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Until(1 == 2) 22:14, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dundee's role in Kirkcaldy's lino[edit]

hello

must i say, you've done an excellant job tendering the Dundee page. anyway, i wonder if you have a source about Dundee's jute mills being linked with the production of linoleum in Kirkcaldy through the linseed oil. i have checked about two/three of my books, but the info is not very clear. i have added a source, but i don't think the content in the source matches with my info.Kilnburn (talk) 23:35, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dundee FA status[edit]

It was mentioned in the Dundee talk page that the article no longer met many of the criteria for FA back in 2007. I imagine the requirements have either changed significantly or the article has degraded through subsequent editing. It is therefore up for FA review. Catfish Jim and the soapdish (talk) 14:04, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

User:Catfish Jim and the soapdish has nominated Dundee for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Dabomb87 (talk) 22:45, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
