Big Problems[edit]

The most neutral source provided on the main page does not support much of this story:

"A second arrest has been made in the murder of a Sabine County man who was run over with a car near Pineland on January 19. Thirty-two year old Darrell Eugene Gilbert of Kirbyville is being held *without* bond in the Sabine County jail. He was originally arrested for parole violation. While in jail, Gilbert was also charged with and arraigned for the murder of 44-year-old Ken "Bimbo" Tillery. Officials believe Tillery was run over because of a dispute over gas money.

Thirty-four year old Blake Little of Jasper is also charged with murder for allegedly running over Tillery. Little remains in the Sabine County jail. His bond has been set at $100,000.

Although the victim in this case is white, and the suspects are black, Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox says the crime does not appear to be racially motivated. "The only thing that we do have is that there were four people in there, with the occupants being black and the deceased white. But again, the altercation came up because of alcohol, drugs, and the non-payment of gas."

One other man and a woman were with Little and Gilbert at the time Tillery was run over. An additional murder warrant has been issued for that man."

The wiki article appears to be contorted to more strongly parallel the James Byrd murder by calling it a "dragging death" when the only objective link provided does not support that assertion. Also the offering of a ride does not appear in the most objective link.

I would highly recommend scrubbing any information taken from Frontpagemagazine.com or Larry Elder as both of those sources are likely tainted by bias.

There should be more accurate information available on this from credible media outlets.

NPOV[edit]

See discussion at Talk:Dragging_death --Xcali 20:36, 28 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've added the pov tag here & removed it from Dragging death, as the latter's only concern is the names in the list, not the tone of the content. Here, tone is the issue. Colonel Tom 04:42, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • My edit referred to above didn't save, apparently; I've instead cleaned up the article to NPOV standard. Colonel Tom 22:52, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This article is still of a very poor quality. I have tried to improve it by pointing out the most important difference (one was a hate crime, the other wasn't) however it still needs some improvements, specifically:

  • Discussion of the circumstances of the death (I believe it was due to an argument)
  • Discussion of the apparently lack of racial motivation
  • Check the existing details, did they really offer him a ride and he refused following which they kidnapped him? This seems unlikely based on the details I have seen

Also, is there an article on the more mainstream media discussing the discrepncy in coverage? The current link is to frontpagemag which appears to be some nutjob right-wing paper.

It would be good if someone could also find a link which points out the differences between the cases. There are numerous differences which we probably can't point out otherwise. For example, the Byrd was a case where someone was tied to the vehicle and was then dragged to his death whereas in this case, it was simply a case of an attempted vehicular homocide which failed so they just continued to drive dragging the victim to his death. POV? Ya sure, you betcha.[edit]

Sorry, I'm from Minnesota :)

This article seems to be subtly POV in its description of the crime. Also, it has basically no sources. --Natalie 03:40, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nitpick?[edit]

Race is not referred to in a consistent manner in the article. The term "white" is used for Tillery while the term "African-American" is used for his killers. Pick a standard and use it, i.e., white for Tillery, black for his killers, or Anglo-American for Tillery, African-American for his killers.

I favor white and black as these are words with fewer syllables. --68.90.235.101 (talk) 05:46, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed move[edit]

Propose this article be moved from the current title to Murder of Ken Tillery. Subject's primary notability is the incident in which he died. Boneyard90 (talk) 20:23, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
