Needed articles.

We should have an article on every pyramid and every nome in Ancient Egypt. I'm sure the rest of us can think of other articles we should have.

Cleanup.

To start with, most of the general history articles badly need attention. And I'm told that at least some of the dynasty articles need work. Any other candidates?

Standardize the Chronology.

A boring task, but the benefit of doing it is that you can set the dates !(e.g., why say Khufu lived 2589-2566? As long as you keep the length of his reign correct, or cite a respected source, you can date it 2590-2567 or 2585-2563)

Stub sorting

Anyone? I consider this probably the most unimportant of tasks on Wikipedia, but if you believe it needs to be done . . .

Data sorting.

This is a project I'd like to take on some day, & could be applied to more of Wikipedia than just Ancient Egypt. Take one of the standard authorities of history or culture -- Herotodus, the Elder Pliny, the writings of Breasted or Kenneth Kitchen, & see if you can't smoothly merge quotations or information into relevant articles. Probably a good exercise for someone who owns one of those impressive texts, yet can't get access to a research library.

It reads like a school or college essay or project, so you may be right; however, until the copyright can be addressed, I'm going to rewrite this page to make it more readable and wikipedia-standard. I can't check the facts as I don't know more about the topic than the original author, I'm just going to improve the readability, grammar and remove irrelevancies, that sort of thing. as a result I'll leave the author's citations intact, so perhaps they can fill in more details on their bibliographical sources at a later time. --Urbane legend 28 June 2005 16:42 (UTC)

Its hard to tell if About Cats by Nicolae Sfetcu is the source or if it is simply plagarising wikipedia, but the Bubastis and the Cult of the Cat section and onwards are identical. — M3TA info (view) 16:04, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite (finished!)[edit]

I've spent a good while revising this page, removing some irrelevancies and altering the style for improved readability. I thought the section on Ra and his nightly journey through the underworld was irrelevant as it did not mention cats and there was only one passing mention of Bast. It's also covered in the main article on Ra. There are some facts I'm uncertain of, particularly the "tribal" sociology of Ancient Egypt - I'm unable to verify whether or not this is true, so I've given the original author the benefit of my doubt. I think the section on the Black Death may be irrelevant; I may cut it down or remove it when I have had a chance to reread the article properly. I have also left intact the original author's method of treating citations as I do not know the sources used, and I figure that by leaving them in place those who do know might be able to correct this. I know there's more work to do but I think I've broken the back of it, and it's getting rather late! --Urbane legend 28 June 2005 23:36 (UTC)

I've had another read and made a few more edits today, including removing much of the Black Death segment. It's irrelevant, and the importance of the cat in ending the plague seems to be overstated by the original author. Thank you for your kind comment. The rewrite is now finished (or at least, as finished as anything can be on wikipedia!. There's a lot of new information added, irrelevant or unsubstantiated statements and passages removed, original information rewritten, removal of irrelevant intrawiki links, bibliography tracked down, and I've read the article about fifty times now and can't see any SPAG errors either, though they may be there anyway. Introduction[edit]

I placed the intro-rewrite tage because the introduction has nothing to do with cat in ancient egypt. It talks about statistics in the United States which has nothing to do with this topic. The whole tone of this article seems very passively voiced, didactic, and meandering. I started with the opening phrase but became frustrated with the poor prose. I agree with the person below- merge the articles, or beef up both of them? I have no idea if this suggestion is going to the right place. Cats in Mythology[edit]

I've never learned to do this but how do I nominate to have 2 articles merged? This and the History of cats article (which is completely lacking in history and just mentions some mythology stuff from not Egypt), I don't see enough in the other religions yet to warrant a stub for a couple of sentences about black cats, cait sidhe, maneki neko and Frejya using them as steeds for her chariot. I don't think the articles should be merged as both pages have enough content to warrant separate articles, but I agree that there should be a Cats in mythology article. There are many references to lions and tiger in various cultural mythologies, it would be nice to have an article bringing together all of these ideas.--Kpstewart (talk) 02:04, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is this related to the black death at all[edit]

Like the message at the top from 2008 says. On this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Gregory_IX#Demonization_of_cats it uses the sources: ^[1]

^[4] This Vox Rama https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vox_in_Rama apparently shows catholics of that time thought there was a satanic cult headed by a black cat. How is this related to ancient Egypt? It is possible that the black death originated in ancient Egypt: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/03/0310_040310_blackdeath.html and the wiki article here already says cats were valued for hunting vermin such as rats. Panthera vs Felis sylvestris[edit]

Lions are "cats" only in a colloquial sense. You removed sourced conten without even trying to explain that. From your edit history I gather you have a thing about lions, but this is about the ordinary housecat (Felis silvestris catus). Kleuske (talk) 11:05, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And all you do, is reverting to the same unimproved state of 4 years ago. This is extremely frustrating!! I just discovered that large parts of the old content was copy-pasted from this website : see http://ageac.org/en/news/the-veneration-and-worship-of-felines-in-ancient-egypt/ , some statements even word by word. @BhagyaMani: If there is any text in the article that has been plagiarised from a copyrighted source, you are within your rights (or even obligated) to delete it as a copyright violation (and your should identify that it is a copyvio in your edit summary). For your information if someone restores the content verbatim (that is: without rephrasing it) you are entitled to revert the readdition without it counting toward the three revert rule. I've written similar, attempting to accommodate the constraint of our style, but I am imagining something is firing correctly today may have an improvement. First things first?:

"Cats in ancient Egypt were widely represented in the iconography and social or religious practices of Ancient Egypt, fulfilling a practical role in the region's culture during life and were often mummified and entombed."

It's not necessary to advertise for a specific book and author in the text itself. Make sure that your additions do NOT constitute WP:COPYVIO.
