DoCB verifications[edit]

Hi Luigizanasi, thanks for helping out with curating the DoCB entries, I can sure use the help. One favour I might ask is that for the ones you verify, besides checking that the DoCB entry is correct, would you mind also checking to see that the birth and death dates are correct with the DoCB entry and that they are in a standard format (with the ndash separator, and places of death and birth mentioned in the body of the text, not in the date range section). Once again, thanks for helping out! Cheers, Fawcett5 14:26, 21 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

endashes[edit]

Hi Luigi, the reason for replacing the hyphens with endashes in dates is mostly pure typography weeniesm on my part. Normally, ndashes are prefered for closed ranges such as dates. See dash for a general breakdown of when to use what dash. Actually, there is also a subsection of the Wikipedia:Manual of Style that deals specifically with how dashes should be used on wikipedia.. see Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dashes). Thanks again for all of your contributions, it has really helped out. Cheers, Fawcett5 20:35, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

"Le" vs. "le", etc.[edit]

Luigi, thanks for explaining about the various usage forms for these, I'll try and do as you suggest and use redirects as much as possible. The capitalisation issue (and also the smart quotes, and the "MacX" vs. "Macx" problem) are a holdover from when I generated a database dump of all the names from the DoCB website... Everything was dumped out in all caps in lastname-firstname order — I had to run quite a long series of text conversions to try and get things rendered correctly. I didn't always get things right. Forgetting to replace the smart quotes with straight quotes was but one example (you also noticed the "Et" capitalisation problem). Feel free to replace them en masse in the lists if you desire. I'm aware that their use is discouraged in article titles. But in any case, it is rumoured that the next version of the wiki software will make that problem go away, and treat the straight and curly quotes identically. I hope this is true. Cheers, Fawcett5 20:47, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Dawson City[edit]

Thanks for the clarification... my initial concern was to communicate it was incorporated as a "town" despite its name, and your current revision gets that across quite nicely. -The Tom 20:53, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Wood names[edit]

Thanks for the note; I'll have more of a think about it later (it's getting late here and I'm very tired after several late nights!), but as a first thought, any of these mis-named woods should only be cited under heavy qualification to make it absolutely clear that they are confusing and not the correct names for the species involved, nor valid uses of the names which belong to other taxa. I am of the opinion that wikipedia should be encouraging accuracy and education, rather than logging (and by implication condoning) every mis-naming and mis-identification that's ever been made. So perhaps something on the lines of:
*[[Mahogany]]
**Mahogany (African) (''Khaya ivorensis'')
**Mahogany (West Indies or Cuban) (''Swietenia mahagoni'')
**Mahogany (Honduras, Central and South America) (''Swietenia macrophylla'')
**"Mahogany" (Philippine) - not a mahogany; see [[Meranti]]
Of the FPL's Wood Handbook, I think it should be included, but only as one of a set of links to several international sources; otherwise it ends up leaving a rather unpleasant US-POV taste to things. Being more of a botanist than a wood scientist, I unfortunately don't know of good international sources, but I'd guess there'll be some around.
Outside of wikipedia, maybe someone should be taking these sellers to court under trades descriptions legislation so as to get labelling improved, but that's another matter altogether! - MPF 23:18, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

First Nations in the Yukon[edit]

Hi Luigizanasi, thanks for catching my mistakes in Template:First Nations in the Yukon. I'll add the two First Nations that weren't supposed to be there into the BC list.

My feeling about diacritics is that if a First Nation includes them in self-identification, we should use them in our lists. If you could add diacritics to the names of First Nations that you know use them I'd appreciate it. Thanks for your help, Kurieeto 17:06, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

Oh, and because the Kwanlin Dun First Nation article is in Category:Aboriginal peoples in the Canadian Arctic, which is within Category:Yukon, I don't think the article also needs to be within Category:Yukon. However, with +600 First Nations/Bands in Canada we may be headed for needing Category:First Nations in the Yukon, Category:First Nations in British Columbia, etc. Kurieeto 17:14, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Luigi - Great work on your recent articles for First Nations in the Yukon. Thanks to your efforts the Yukon is the first Canadian territory or province for which Wikipedia has articles for all First Nations within its borders. Well done! Kurieeto 23:58, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

Categorization of Aboriginal peoples in Canada[edit]

Hi Luigi,

Thanks for your comments about the categorization of articles about First Nations in Canada. I agree that the current structure could be improved. Your other points about First Nations-matters are also good, and I'll address them below.

I wanted to begin our discussion with an explanation of my original vision for the "Aboriginal peoples in _" categories. I created them because at the time Category:First Nations (then Category:Canadian First Nations) had no sub-categorization at the provincial or territorial level, and only had articles for First Nations ethnicities such as Cree or Nisga'a, and nothing for First Nations political entities such as the Tsuu T'ina Nation. Additionally there was no parent category above Category:First Nations, so the Inuit and Métis were not on an equal footing. I felt a need for categories that encompassed the various First Nations, Inuit, and Métis groups, media outlets, and organizations that existed within each province and territory of Canada. In the event that insufficent articles on a province or territory existed on Wikipedia, I grouped them by region such as the Canadian Arctic, the Prairie Provinces, or Atlantic Canada. But as you point out the current arrangement is flawed, as articles such as the Kwanlin Dün First Nation are not within Category:First Nations, which is very counter-intuitive.

Given that there are over 600 First Nations or Bands in Canada, I feel a need for categories that only contain those political/organizational entities. My difficulty is that if we name these categories "First Nations in _", we will need some other name for its parent category that will encompass all First Nations-topics related to that province or territory. This would be avoided if we grouped First Nations or Bands in a category called "First Nations Bands in _". Or "First Nations and Bands in _". Then we could call the parent category "First Nations in _". I hope that makes sense, I'll try making a visual representation:

Category:First Nations

Category:First Nations in the Yukon
Tagish
Category:First Nations and Bands in the Yukon
Kwanlin Dün First Nation

This arrangement would then allow us to put say Raven's Eye, a newspaper about Aboriginal issues in BC and the Yukon, in Category:First Nations in the Yukon. Does that work? This category would prove most useful in provinces and territories with many First Nations and Bands, such as British Columbia, where there are over 150.

My last-night's comments about the problems with the shifting semantics of "First Nation(s)" come to the fore here, I'd say. To me, coming from fairly heavy Indian country (Lillooet and Mission, and frankly a lot of my friends and happy chance acquaintances over the years in the city have been First Nations people), the term means ethnicity and can be used for a government. I have a rougher time with using it as a general adjective (and not just because it's cumbersome and dorky in speech and in writing, more often than not). So Raven's Eye to me clearly is not a "First Nation" as the syntax of that category implies; as it is, the First Nation category includes bands, communities, and ethnicities (until First Nations governments was coined). In this case, along with First Nations Drum in BC and other publications, I suggest a category "First Nations media [in BC/YT/AB etc]". I'll get back to reading your dialoguing now, just to close this bit with the comment that I've been having a deuce of a time figuring out which of which existing article/stub deserves the First Nations tag - anything that is connected to First Nations can currently have it, be it a magazine as above, North of 60 or bios, and failing it (if not an ethnicity or band) what else to give it; I'd say further categories, "Archaeology of First Nations [in BC/YT/AB etc]" (for Keatley Creek, Xa:ytem, something on Old Crow), "History/Politics of First Nations [in BC/YT/AB etc]" (both or either), "First Nations culture [in BC/YT/AB etc]", "First Nations bios" and so on.Skookum1 16:30, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As for templates, I started dividing by tribal council because I couldn't think of a better way to seperate all the First Nations in BC. Other than grouping the Vancouver Island ones together, there wasn't an easy geographic division. I had planned to group any First Nation not in a tribal council into a template titled "Unaffiliated First Nations in _". My work on that project has gotten sidetracked though.

Your points about the term "Canadian Arctic" being a misnomer are good, and I agree that using "Canada's Territories" or "Canadian Territories" would be better.

Thanks also for splitting the Kaska article. Similar problems are rampant in Category:Aboriginal peoples in British Columbia.

Please give me your thoughts on the above. I think we're making a good start in re-organization. Kurieeto 01:33, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Luigi,
That's a brilliant idea to use "First Nations governments in", it really solves all our problems, well done. I fully support your organizational flow chart as displayed on my talk page, let's use that. My only comment would be that because there are so many First Nations reserves in Canada (a number equal to or more than the number of First Nations themselves), we could have a series of "First Nations reserves in" categories, to be part of the "First Nations in" categories. So we would have:
Category:Aboriginal peoples in the Canadian Arctic and Category:First Nations
Category:First Nations in the Yukon
Category:First Nations governments in the Yukon
Category:First Nations reserves in the Yukon
By the way, I've been considering suggesting doing away with all "Aboriginal peoples in" categories except Category:Aboriginal peoples in Canada. They may just be confusing things for new readers too much, and we may not have enough Métis and Inuit articles to warrant them existing right now anyway.
When I get back to working with the templates I'll try to effectively work in First Nations ethnicities. I'd encourage you to keep trying to work them in too. Template:Canada might be a good Template to try to work from, as it has two distinct rows that might be easily modified to our purposes. Kurieeto 17:38, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

Templates[edit]

Hi Luigi,

I've adapted your proposed First Nations category structure to the other provinces and regions of Canada for which we have categories on Wikipedia. I may propose to do away with all of the Aboriginal peoples categories except Category:Aboriginal peoples in Canada, if I do I'll give you a heads up and a link to where they are on Wikipedia:Categories for deletion. Also, we may need seperate templates for First Nations peoples and First Nations governments in a province or territory. This is because for example presently all First Nations governments in Template:First Nations in the Yukon are being listed in Category:First Nations in the Yukon and Category:First Nations governments in the Yukon. This is due to the Template's categorization in Category:First Nations in the Yukon. Any category that is applied to a template is also applied to all links within that template. Have a great weekend, Kurieeto 23:28, August 20, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Luigi,
The only advantage to keeping templates in categories is it would make individually categorizing each article within a template redundant. This would be useful if all of a template's articles eventually needed to be moved to a brand new category, as changing the categorization of the template would then change the categorization of all articles in it. But I don't see that as being likely neccessary now that we have our "First Nations governments" categories. So, we can proceed with taking templates out of categories, and keeping the lists of peoples and governments together. Kurieeto 02:47, August 22, 2005 (UTC)
Skookum1 2nd note: about the above. There's situations, again with Somena mentioned elsewhere, where the people and government are somewhat indeterminate and well as indistinguishable; in the Somena's case because they're not a "legal" government, but one of the ancient social divisions of the peoples of the Cowichan valley; what we might call a "chieftaincy" but that's an imposed concept (if you read the Somena page you'll see what I mean....I think). Bottom line is, frankly, we're imposing a rational order based on our concepts (separate concepts) of ethnicity, language and government; in some First Nations culture that's a lot harder to do; so the Somena are NOT a First Nations government in the white man's way of thinking, or even in the thinking of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (which is an organization of whiteman-system band governments and tribal councils created by the Indian Act, the reserve system, and Government Agents et al); but it would be touchy to exclude the Somena from equal status in a template, say, with their neighbours/kin the Quamichan. All too confusing for a cultus whiteman at this hour of the night so I'm going to bed now....Skookum1 07:32, 17 June 2006 (UTC) Except to add consider Nuu-chah-nulth, which does not include Ditidaht and a few other Aht peoples; but the Aht, usually known as the Nootka, use the term Nuu-chah-nulth for their ethnicity as well as for their language as well as for their group organization (which does not include the Ditidaht). The Kwakwaka'wakw do the same (the name means "speakers of Kwak'wala, but the Kwagyulh (Fort Rupert) and Laich-kwil-tach are Kwak'wala speakers too. What's in a name? Lots of politics, apparently; similarly with breakaway groups within the St'at'imc and Nlaka'pamux and Secwepemc and so many other areas/peoples; where the ancient name of the people/language has been somewhat coopted by an official/large grouping.....needless to say there's many articles which are tangled in amidst each other, and the surgery is going to be delicate separating them and figuring out what goes where, and with who and why......Skookum1 07:35, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Skookum1 here. I'm going to have to study all of the above at leisure and see what's going on. I wrote some stuff on User talk:Kurieeto just now by way of example, although I didn't try the category-trees like you have above; I'll give this some more thought and read over your stuff; lately I've been working my way through a draft proposal for a Wikiproject British Columbia at User:Buchanan-Hermit/WikiProject-Sandbox, using the table format from the Indigenous peoples project, and it brought home to me the complexity of the issue in some areas (the Carrier area's going to be crazy to work out; Lheidli Tenneh, Dinazdli (?), Carrier, Dakelh, Babine, Witsuweten, Wet'su-we'ten, Ulgatcho, Itcha, Nazko and more are all identities/groupings within that (theoretically "Carrier" but that now is associated with a particular tribal council so not used by breakaway groups; I think Dakelh is the ethnic collectivity but I can't figure it out exactly; I don't live up there....), and there's isolated no-grouping governments and large-scale groupings which have no geographic continuity (except as claimed in land claims positions; conflicting of course as with Musqueam, Squamish, Tsawwassen, Burrard/Tsleil-wau-tuth and Coquitlam all overlapping where I live (Burnaby)). So have a look at what I told Kurieeto, and as I recall you're also a BC/Vancouver person, so give me your thoughts on the BC Wikiproject (I'm thinking of moving the tables I've constructed to various List and subsection talk pages where they might be more useful; as I've already done with the rivers section q.v.). Gotta zzzzzzz Skookum1 07:26, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to consider: "Category:First Nations languages in British Columbia", outside the usual linguistics hierarchy alluded to above. I've field this by User:Billposer who's a linguistics contributor from BC to get his reactions; I just think the First Nations category, while it could include ethnographic and individual-item articles, should have a BC-defined subcat for languages/dialects; presumably also for AB, YT, ON etc. I also spent a while this morning removing "Native American tribes" cat from a lot of BC people/band pages; that cat's probably all over the place in First Nations (in Canada) but I haven't gone outside BC with this yet.Skookum1 22:12, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

yukon election[edit]

Hello, I have been trying to create some pages for the Yukons' general elections for some time now. I created the pages for the election of 2000, 2002, and the upcoming 2006. Since you come from the YuKon (I'm in Ontario), do you know where I can find the results of general elections before 2000. Especially the 1996 election. PS. Keep watch on the Yukon general election, 2006.

This may be a odd question, but was Jack Cable the Liberal leader at the time?

Nevermind I found it. Wow you went up against the Premier, bold move!

Metalworking wikiproject?[edit]

I've noticed you making edits to drill bit... do you think a metalworking (maybe including woodworking due to the high amount of overlap) wikiproject would be a good idea? I've noticed the metalworking articles are rather fragmented, and have found many pages without a single link to them, such as endmill (which I've sinced added many to)... plus lots of (often conflicting) duplication. A bit of coherent orginization and a navigation footer might be quite a help for the pages... or any other ideas? Thanks, Bushytails 05:45, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Woodworking wikiproject[edit]

This message was sent to User:Carders User:SilentC User:Boinger User:RJP Hello, I have noticed that you have recently been making a number of valuable edits on woodworking-related pages. I would like to start a Wikiproject on woodworking if there is enough interest. Please reply on my user talk page if you think this is a good idea (oer even if you don't. I have taken a stab at a starting a wikiproject page in a sandbox page at User:Luigizanasi/sandbox. Feel free to edit it and to add your ideas. As soon as we have enough participants, I will start the project page at Wikipedia:Wikiproject Woodworking. Luigizanasi 22:05, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am not familiar with the objective of a wikiproject - is it simply a page in which several users coordinate a collection of topic-related pages? It seems reasonable to take such an approach but I cannot guarantee a large time commitment on my part. Hilmar 03:42, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
G'day Luigi. I noticed you'd been in tidying up a bit after me. I meant to drop in and say thanks, so thanks! If we can get enough interest in a woodworking project, I'll be glad to be involved. As you know the information there now is patchy and not well organised. It would be good to get some sort of consistency across it. Count me in. SilentC 22:24, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Monitoring Changes[edit]

Luigi, I've noticed you seem to be able to tell when I've added new articles (because you're following along adding the Categories, which I always seem to forget to do :o) and I was wondering how you find them? I've looked at Recent Changes and it seems to go on and on for pages. What's the secret?

BTW I almost got into my first fight the other day. I moved rebate (marketing) and created a disambig page for rebate but forgot to update all the links to the old rebate page. My memory isn't what it used to be....

Cheers, Darren. SilentC 05:24, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just blind luck then, eh ;). Oh well, I was hoping for a magical 'show all woodworking-related articles' link. Not to worry, I've got plenty to do without looking for more trouble to get into :) SilentC 05:47, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Electoral Districts[edit]

I would like to invite you to participate in Wikipedia:WikiProject Electoral districts in Canada. It is just getting started so please read through the proposal, familiarize yourself with the options/examples and then participate in the debate about how the pages should best be laid out. --maclean25 00:31, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I removed our exchange at Wikipedia:WikiProject Electoral districts in Canada/Demographics in order to keep the page tidy (yes, fruitless in the long run). I placed the links at Wikipedia:WikiProject Electoral districts in Canada/References. I wish to first establish the Demographics page as a voting page like the VfD pages before it gets bogged down in comments. The goal there is to get a list of appropriate data/demographics so that we can move onto figuring out what data goes where (ie. population in infobox, animals by year of birth in tables, etc). You can help by putting a support or object by one of the proposals. However, if you think it was inappropriate to remove your comment you can revert. --maclean25 08:13, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Native American name controversy, too[edit]

Had a quick look at this page after seeing the note farther above. Didn't want to mess with your prose style, but it might be worth adding some info if you can incorporate it with less than my usual verbiage:

"Native American" is unsuitable for aboriginal people in Canada, where "First Nations" or "Native" is preferred. In Canada, "Native American" means the equivalent to Native/First Nation people and sounds awkward.

Also, FYI your comment on the use of 'sauvage' now being racist is paralleled by the fate of its variant in the Chinook Jargon (siwash, sometimes sawash), which originally just meant "an Indian male", or "something Indian". Interestingly the etymology is something saved, or saveable, i.e. from sauver.

In some arch-political circles in Canada, "first nations person" is the gender-neutral politically-correct expression to replace "Indian". Awkward in conversation, yeah. Some native people, especially younger ones, increasingly prefer to refer to themselves by their specific nationality, i.e. Haida or Okanagan or Nlaka'pamux or Cree or Innu or whatever.

Metis also has two meanings. The older one refers to the original culture and heritage of the Riel-vintage Metis people. The newer one, and now the legal standard into which the Metis people have been absorbed or categorized, is another of mixed native blood (who can prove status descent). There was some resistance to the new meaning by the Metis people but it is now a generally accepted legalism. The unpleasant alternative was "halfbreed" (coll. "breed").

Re Mexico the term currently in colloquial use for the collective of aboriginal peopls in Mexico, whether Maya or Tarahumara or Zapotec or whatever, is indio (f. india).

Demographics[edit]

I noticed you have added to the demographics section of the electoral districts project. Since Mindmatrix, SimonP, you, and myself seem to be the only ones interested in this section, I proposed to Mindmatrix, and now you, that we each try to design a prototype section. Links to StatsCan electoral district profiles are on the page. If you don't want to mess around with code, then just a sketch of how you see the data, tables and graphs (infobox?) being laid out will be fine. Since the articles will focus much more on election results, this demographic section is just really just a sidenote to help put the results in context but it has the possibility of consuming a lot of room. So at this point I'm interested in seeing how this section will be laid out. At the sametime we can see what data is realistic to include and what is just too burdensome. How does this sound? --maclean25 06:22, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Date Links[edit]

Hello, thanks for your edits on the Drill bit page. However, you will note that I have unlinked many years, while linking the dates. The only reason for putting square brackets around dates is so that different people's date format preferences work. See: Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Date formatting for instructions. Like you, when I first started editing, I was putting square brackets around all years thinking it was the right way to do things until I ran across the page on date formatting. Cheers & keep up the good work. Luigizanasi 05:51, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the pointer, Luigizanasi. I thought linking the years, which I've seen on quite a few pages, was for categorization purposes. Now I'll have to go back to the dozens of pages I've edited to see if I did the same thing on them! --QuicksilverT @ 06:19, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Colour codewords for obsolete political parties?[edit]

Hi. I've been writing up defunct or important BC constituencies and came across some knots; not sure what to do for colour-abbreviations for older parties. Long, long ago there used to be things like the Soldier-Farmer party but I improvised and used colours from later parties (Natural Law in that case, I think). Most important to have a colour for is the Liberal-Conservative Coalition; I went ahead and used "Marijuana" as the colour key (!) and it worked. Figured out problems with WCC and Progressives and stuff; wondering about really obscure parties (there's a list of defunct BC parties on the Elections BC site. Can I just go and make templates, or is there someone responsible for that; I'd have to know the Wiki colourwords anyway, from what I can see of how a template is made. Also possibly useful/needed are pre-political party "Government" and "Opposition" colours, although that's misleading because the same guy might be in one or the other from election to election; also the Provincial Party and a few others that had political profiles, if not actual members (the BC Constructive Party was an offshoot of the CCF and should have a colour, as it had members, if only by grandfathering them from the CCF caucus. Electoral Districts[edit]

Please review Langley (electoral district). What do you think of this as a simple prototype for a current federal riding? The demographics are based on your list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Electoral districts in Canada/Demographics. There are some blanks in there that I just could not find. I'm still fiddling with the election-results box but that is the gist of its size/shape/outline. --maclean25 05:45, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • In response to your points, I will say:
1. The area really was intended for the individual district. You're right that it doesn't really mean anything on a Canada-wide basis.
2. I really like pop change so I am ok with using whatever period is available, whether it is 1996-2001 or 1991-1996.
3. You're the economist so I'll trust you on this one.
4. Incidence of low income (and high income if that exists) is tops on my wish list. If it is not available it should be dropped. Average income can be its replacement. I do not believe it is useful but others seem to be distracted by it.
5. I'm still opposed to language (outside Quebec), immigration, and especially ethnicity. I can bend for language being included in the Ontario/NB ridings. I can bend for immigration and Aboriginal population with enough support pressure. But I do not see how ethnicity factors into voting. It has been my experience that the only ethnic group that votes as a block is the Chinese and they are not loyal to a particular party. They vote as a block for the Liberal or Conservative candidates. I believe the other economic and demographic situation far outweighs the ethnicity factor for "visible minorities" in voting decisions. --maclean25 06:53, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for participating in the WikiProject on Electoral districts in Canada. As you know there will be an election soon. So this may be the best time for the Canadian Wikipedia community to band together and write these articles on current federal electoral districts. Based on your comments, and the comments of others, I have put together a prototype layout at the above link. The prototype is not a final proposal. It is just a place to start from, where we can discuss and experiment. Please review it, comment but keep an open mind, and help form a concensus. --maclean25 01:05, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed the new Demographics section you added. I think one of the entries is wrong - did you mean Metro Toronto, or Greater Toronto Area. The former is the city itself, whereas the latter includes Durham, York and Peel Region. I suspect you intended the latter, but if not, then you need to include Woodbridge, Ontario in the list, since it's home to more Italians than all but the first four cities in the list. I'm not sure how you split the numbers, so I'll leave it to you to make the appropriate change. Mindmatrix 19:21, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It appears the correct answer is: the Toronto CMA, so the best fit would be Greater Toronto Area. I'll update it myself. Mindmatrix 19:29, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think there was a previous discussion about including statistical areas, but I don't remember the result (I vaguely recall that most people didn't want it). I haven't been able to find the discussion though... Let me think about it for a while. Mindmatrix 19:15, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Participant alert regarding Wikiproject on Advertising[edit]

The Wikiproject No Ads, created as a backlash against the Answers.com deal, has served an important function in providing a space for users to express their disagreement with the Foundation proposal. While the current controversies about userboxes raise questions about political and social advocacy on Wikipedia, there should be greater flexibility regarding advocacy about Wikipedia in the Wikipedia namespace. Reported and linked by Slashdot and other press sources as a unique and spontaneous occurence in Wikipedia history, it has apparently had some impact as, despite being scheduled to begin in January, not a peep has been heard about the trial and proposed sponsored link since the deal's controversial announcement months ago. Currently, however, there is an attempt to delete the project or move it off Wikipedia altogether. Since the Foundation has provided no additional information and has not attempted to answer the specific questions that participants in the project raised, it is unclear if the Answers.com deal has been abandoned or simply delayed. Until the situation becomes more clear, I believe the group should still have a place in the Wikipedia namespace. Sincerely, Tfine80 00:05, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Prospectors[edit]

Hi,

Apologies for the very slow reply; I've been swamped by vandals and sockpuppets this week, and have only just got back to my "real job" of writing articles.

I wasn't aware of Category:Gold prospectors when I created Category:Prospectors. I have no objection to merging the two. If the final title ends up being "Gold prospectors", then we would have to remove Lang Hancock, who was an iron ore prospector. But that's no big deal.

Aboriginal or Native?[edit]

Do you know any Native peoples from Canada? If you do perhaps you also know that they generally prefer being called Native (which is impeccably acceptable, since that's exactly what they are in every sense) to the label 'Aboriginal' -- which non native people sometimes might use knowing full well that they don't like it, just to try to get their goat in a subtle way. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 04:42, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well maybe the tribes living in Yukon prefer it, but the Mi'kmaq tribe definitely prefers to be called NATIVE. Aboriginal is only used in bureaucratese, when absolutely necessary. 'Native' is much more strictly accurate anyway; the technical meaning of 'aboriginal' is to imply wrongly that they are in a natural state, with no developed culture or civilisation, ie, not all that different from the meaning of the word 'savage'... ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 06:16, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Any references I would have to Mi'kmaq Nation preferring to be called 'Native' over 'Aboriginal' are all verbal references and would not carry much weight with people who have to have everything in writing. To be sure, more literary references and when dealing with governments etc. the word 'Aboriginal' is used for convention sake. Be careful if you plan to use the word in actual conversational setting. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 14:56, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Saw your Gold Rush edit[edit]

I think I wrote that sentence (it's all a wikiblur now) and partly used "at" because I didn't want to repeat "near". It didn't seem to scan that way or something; the same preposition twice in a row, I guess; just wondered if you'd noticed; I wrote it your way first, too, as the Klondike goldfields aren't themselves AT Dawson, but that's where the confluence of the rivers is (Dawson is on the right bank of the confluence) which in my read of the syntax went "thataway". The Indigenous Peoples of North America Portal has been established, as a starting point for those wishing to learn more about the subject, with information and links on a wide variety of issues. It also contains news regarding the continent's various tribes and nations. It's a graphically pleasing site, and everyone is encouraged to check it out.
The project's home page has a new design, featuring tabbed subpages on participants, templates, articles, categories, and the to do list.
The Article Classification lists have been moved to their own subpage due to size. This is a sign of progress in the ongoing work of this project.
The project's talk page template has been updated, along with the classification system, to include the assessment on the talk pages of the articles that have been classified and assessed.
Balance
As the Project reaches its first six months of activity, the great effort all of you have invested in it has turned the vast information available on Indigenous North American topics from a deorganized cumulous into an excellent and easy to consult database. Although much work is still in order, few WikiProjects are able to obtain the amazing results we are proud to show today. To all of you, thank you and congratulations!
The assessment of articles within the scope of the project is still an ongoing process. We need people to help in this who are not contributors to the articles they are assessing. Also, there is the ongoing need for identifying and cataloguing articles that fall within the scope of this project. As of today, nearly 1,500 have been identified within the Project's scope.

Dene and NWT First Nations categories[edit]

Hi Luigizanasi, thanks for your comments. I removed the [First Nations in XXX] categories precisely because not all Dene (or its sub-nations) live in NWT. I added Category:First Nations in Alberta, Category:First Nations in Saskatchewan, and Category:First Nations in Manitoba to Category:Dene. So, for instance, Category:First Nations in Alberta will now have a [:Category:Dene]] subcategory, as will the other two provinces and the NWT.

That sounds more confusing than it is, but now, rather than having to include each of those provincial categories plus the dene category to every article, you can just add [:Category:Dene] and it will automatically be included in the provincial categories. Let me know if you still think it's a problem. -- TheMightyQuill 05:56, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories...[edit]

Yeah, I totally agree that applying modern provincial/state boundaries to indigenous groups is highly problematic, both because these nations cross those boundaries, and because it is NPOV in that it denies the claims of those nations claiming sovereignty from Canada/US. Geographic categories aren't perfect but they're better than anything else. I support taking it to the wikiproject.

On the other hand, I suppose someone wanting to know which nations have reserves within the current borders of their province/state should be able to find that out.

As for wikipedia rules Wikipedia:Category, I don't think there's a problem with an article being in two sub-cats of a cat, only that it shouldn't usually be in both a category and its subcategory. That's not a problem in this case. -- TheMightyQuill 10:27, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Woodworking glossary[edit]

Hi Luigi. I already linked to the glossary from List of glossaries but I couldn't find anywhere to put it, so I created a new heading Industrial Arts under Arts and Culture. What do you reckon? SilentC 04:34, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, so it's a can of worms. I must admit when I first started looking for woodworking info here, I tried to navigate from the home page but found it impossible to find the topic. I stumbled upon it by searching for 'dovetail' of all things and the rest is history ;). It's one of those difficult to define subjects, because it is such a broad definition. On the one hand, you have carpenters building houses, then you have cabinet makers and furniture makers, and then you have woodturners and carvers. Right there you have gone from the ultra-practical, through form meets function, to pure art, so where does it fit? I notice they have no problem with architecture, normally categorised as an art, appearing prominently under technology as well. I think these people are elitist idiots who spend too much time in front of the computer and not enough time in the shed!! I have removed my Industrial Arts heading - it would probably have died a horrid death anyway - and I have left your link intact. Cheers!! SilentC 05:30, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Luigizanasi,
Have finally taken a look at your corrections to the above in the wake my attempted revision – thanks for looking through it. Given your amendment to its opening, I'm wondering if it needs renaming as Census geographic units of Canada...?  Regards, David Kernow (talk) 02:05, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I do think that the Census Divisions of Canada should be renamed to Census geographic units of Canada. The main Census division article should be a disambiguation page as the two terms are used quite differently in Canada and the US. I don't know what the generic term should be, but I suggest it shouldn't be "census division" as this will lead to confusion. I sort of like the US term, : "Census geographic entities".
Best wishes, David (talk) 21:42, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
PS Also pending my own further research, I've left the section header "Dissemination areas" on Census geographic units of Canada as if these areas form the fourth level of units alone. My apologies if this is incorrect (e.g. if they are a form of or alternative to (say) census tracts).
