Hello Carole a and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

Hi, I see Meelar has already welcomed you. I fixed your captions on Kazakh Steppe and Tulip images (pretty nice images too!), all they needed was "thumb" in the image link. That creates a box around the image and the caption then appears. The Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial explains it in the Thumbnailing section. -Wikibob | Talk 22:22, 2004 Sep 14 (UTC)

Wikibob, thanks for the captions and re-arranging. I like the result. 02:59, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

E*sequiturs tulip link PERMISSION REQUEST TIME SENSITIVE[edit]

Dear Carole a:

This posting to respectfully ask your permission to include your excellent red tulip photo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Wild_tulip_in_the_steppe_of_Kazakhstan.jpg) in my upcoming experimental e-book, "e*sequiturs" (http://www.esequiturs.com; launch late Fall 2008). Of course, you will be appropriately cited in the webliography.

Your photo is especially important to e*sequiturs because a red tulip is cited in a poem and because it forms the rubricated letter U.

Thank you in advance for your consideration; your timely response is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

Sincerely, David St.-Lascaux dstlascaux@gmail.com

P.S.: Public posting of correspondence in Wikipedia is awkward. If you can reply to my e-mail address I shall be grateful.

Actually you did manage to upload the correct version. If you go to the page above you will see two versions. The first one is grassland, the other is the coat of arms by the side of a road. The reason you thought that you hadn't managed to upload the correct image is probably to do with caching. When a browser downloads a web page the first time, it downloads all the pictures and keeps them in a temporary file. When you back to that web page a second time, it looks to see if it already has any picture files in the temp folder and if it does it used them instead of downloading them again. This saves time and bandwidth. For example the wikipedia logo only needs to be downloaded once even though it appears on the top right hand corner of every page.

Anyway - when you upload a new version of a picture, you will not see it if the old one is still in your computer. You need to force your browser to download the new version, which you can easily do by hitting the reload or refresh toolbar button. HTH Theresa Knott (taketh no rest) 07:40, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

He, I did too! Thank you! When I go to image:Aktobe's coat of arms.jpg right now I just get one picture and actually the right one. So now what do I do with the request to have the picture deleted? I think I'll wait and see what happens. I can always reload it carefully. I am making progress all the time. One day I may even know how to get the vertical bar you need in the picture name without doing a "copy/paste" from another picture!
When I answer something like this, am I suppose to post it also/only on the talk page of the person I am answering? Carole a 08:09, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Just to let you know, as Theresa said you had correctly uploaded Image:Aktobe's coat of arms.jpg, so I removed the request for deletion from that image and commented on the ifd page too. See Image_talk:Aktobe's coat of arms.jpg. It's good to have more images, but I notice they are quite large, both in apparant size and in number of kilobytes. Some have been cropped and resized to make them more confortable for those on low speed connections, but it would be useful if you could do some cropping and resizing before you upload. I find the free tool Irfanview ideal for this but see Image viewer for other choices. -Wikibob | Talk 12:56, 2004 Sep 15 (UTC)

picture size[edit]

About your problem downloading irfanview, I would not worry about where you said you were. A quick work-around is to click on "Other download sites" when you try again but not those Thailand mirrors as I just tested both and they fail.

The TUCOWS download network appears to use cookies to "remember" what location you used last time, so if you know how just delete the cookies from your browser (which browser and which operating system are you using?). If it is Internet Explorer (not recommended) on Windows XP, try click Start - Control Panel - Internet Options - Delete Cookies and try it again, you may need to close the browser and restart and relogin to wikipedia as you will have deleted the wikipedia cookies too.

If you use Mozilla Firefox (recommended, but maybe not for a beginner), you are able to delete just the cookies you want: Tool - Options - Privacy - Cookies - Stored Cookies and look for any tucows cookies and delete them. You may need also to clear Mozilla's download manager history as it might "remember" that you've already downloaded it.

As a last resort try www.oldversion.com click on Irfanview and scroll down to the newest oldversion they have: IrfanView 3.85 (0.8 MB) and download that instead.

If you are truly a beginner with computers, I hope for your security you have set up or enabled a Personal firewall, Anti-virus software and anti spyware software.

As to the TUCOWS download form, it only asks for the closest location to where you are to try to get a better connection and avoid using long stretches of internet. However often the local mirrors are slow and don't finish downloading (and both the Thailand mirrors appear broken), so I suggest choosing the most powerful, maybe Germany (very fast for me, few seconds) or another country in Europe would be best for you. As an experiment I also tried downloading from the Hong Kong mirror and it took far too long (10 + minutes!) for just 800 Kilobytes (I have a fast connection and small megabyte downloads are usually fast from good servers even halfway around the world). - Wikibob | Talk 10:02, 2004 Sep 16 (UTC)

Sedimentary rocks[edit]

Hi, glad to have some input. I answered on my talk, but find many expect an answer on their talk so copied it here. I created those very preliminary templates a while back planning to get more organized with them - but have been off chasing other dreams for awhile. Maybe clastics, evaporites, and carbonates. With further subdiv. under each esp. the carbonates. And realizing that there is always going to be something that doesn't fit or fits in more than one category. Maybe this will spur me to get it more organized and move them from my personal workspace to the rock & mineral group page. Your suggestions are welcome and you can edit them, even tho they are currently in my user space. Vsmith 16:20, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Kazakh Shepherd Photo[edit]

Just wanted to drop a note to say that the photo at [Image:Kazakh shepard with dogs and horse.jpg] is great; one of my favorites! Thanks for adding it! AdamantlyMike 16:41, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
