Greetings

Please contact me on jef_frey_kni_pe_at_g_mail_dot_com (remove all underscores, at = @ and dot .... well, you get the idea.) Was reading article about South African Special Forces, noticed that every one has that sad badge and redrew it quickly. Wanted to give it to you to upload to the article as a replacement. Jpeg/gif your choice.

Hi. I've been following the edits of Alcatel lately, following a few NPOV quasi-vandalisations of some pages I was working on. Of all the edits that s(he) has made so far, I can honestly say that I don't believe that more than 10% were useful, or that more than about 20% were not subsequently reverted by other users. The edits are riddled with factual inaccuracy, usually in attempts to push a political point, and contain frequent use of the term "kaffir" to refer to black South Africans. I've left a (hopefully) fairly peacable suggestion on Alcatel's talk page, and have been trying to defuse some of the edit wars Alcatel has started (by expanding disputed sections with verified, neutral fact). However, I am worried that this will continue. I was hoping maybe you could help me keep an eye on Alcatel's edits, and maybe try and nudge him/her towards a more constructive means of participating in wikipedia. (Trying. Not. To. Get. Angry.) -Kieran 21:35, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree about the possibility of RfC's, etc. In case that needs to happen, I've been compiling a list of problematic edits, while I've been fixing the problems (at least the ones that hadn't been reverted immediately). However, I feel that the pattern of edits has shown gradual a decrease in problematic edits since Alcatel joined last year. Alcatel also seems to have made some good faith edits to pages on topics outside of South Africa. Finally, while I disagree with Alcatel's apparently extreme right wing views, I think that in a few cases it's been good to have someone questioning the edits the rest of us are making. I think, in our national pride/liberalism, we tend to get caught up in the rhetoric produced by the government.
For instance, Alcatel has a point about democracy in South Africa: Strictly speaking, the country has been democratic since its creation in 1911, although the right to vote was highly restricted. When the current government speaks of "10 years of democracy", what they really mean is "10 years of democracy for all". I've caught myself talking about 1994 as being the "start of democracy in South Africa", even though this is not strictly accurate. (I've since used "since the end of Apartheid, in 1994" in the article, which is strictly true, though probably still not the best phraseology.)
My hope is that we can persuade Alcatel to become a valuable contributor, countering our own more liberal systemic bias in South African articles, but doing so by backing things up with hard fact, rather than biased conjecture, as he/she has been doing. If Alcatel's behavior continues to be problematic, I'm hoping we can keep whatever steps are taken civil and constructive. ArbCom should really be an absolute last resort.
Anyway, sorry for cluttering your talk page. (I realise this might be a bit of a rant.) -Kieran 11:16, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RFA[edit]

Hi there! Well, here it is:Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Elf-friend. Best of luck! Banez 16:58, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, all the best!-Banez 08:57, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you're wondering why the nomination hasnt been added to the RfA page, I think it was because you accepted just below the official acceptance patch and the bot or whatever didnt move the page. I've moved your acceptance to (I think/hope) the right place. Cheers Banez 19:37, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question related to your RFA[edit]

How prepared are you to follow WP policy - in particular, how prepared are you to stick to the requirement of consensus for deletion, even if you happen to dislike the article/template etc. in question? Cynical 12:03, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another Esperanzial note...[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

SA Border War[edit]

Hi there. I just wanted to congratulate you on your fantastic work on the South African Border War and the operations conducted during it. I've always been bugged by the lack of any coverage on that period of the defence force's history, but I've been too busy of late to do much about it. Your work on the units of the SA Army has also been excellent, with a ton of interesting detail. Incidentally, where do you get your info from? Anyway, keep up the great work, and good luck with the Admin nomination (though looking at the votes, I'd say you've got that in the bag). Cheers. — Impi 10:28, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. Those three sites are all good sources, which I've visited before at one time or another (though I guess I should've paid more attention when I was there). I've also been having problems with the SAMU server, which doesn't seem to have been operating for quite a while. I'll see if I can contact the guy who runs it, John Dovey, and see what's happening. Otherwise, keep up the good work! — Impi 13:49, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations![edit]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful.

South African Border War[edit]

Hi, I see you are working on this as well. Do you have any information on "Bridge Fourteen" ? I saw the news on TV1 at the time and my PF Major Blaauw from Potch Artillery, 4th Field Regiment, apeared on the news at the front, probably where the advance came to a standstill. Seamless searching[edit]

I was reading your talk about Tsotsi.. This happens all the time.. Due to fuzzy search input, transliteration issues, disambiguation issues, sloven spelling and our multi-lingual user community we need a seamless search facility. Wiki searches are very exact as far as existing articles are concerned. Why can't a Wikipedia search divert to a Wiktionary result where appropriate, and vice versa? Cheers Gregorydavid 10:57, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1[edit]

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Congrats[edit]

Congratulations, how did I miss this? You sneaked under the radar and now you're an administrator. Well done! I have being so busy getting my new company, e-science, off the ground that I have slacked off abit on wiki but I will make it up. --Jcw69 11:36, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

note when speedying articles[edit]

If you ever speedy an article with an AfD tag, such as the aladdin, please head over to the deletion discussion page and close it off (see Wikipedia:Deletion_process#Articles_for_Deletion_page for how). I've covered the example I've given above, but it does make it easier for the grunts over at AfD when you admins clean up your tracks and indicate what the hell is going on :P -- Saberwyn 11:51, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Buddhism in South Africa[edit]

Hey, thanks for your help with this article :) I spent hours looking for pics of that temple near Joburg, but didn't know what it was called... turns out you'd taken a pic that was already on wikipedia! Much appreciated, Joziboy 3 April 2006, 13:00 (UTC)

You appear to have deleted the above article, but I am not sure what your edit summary means, as it does not explain why you made the deletion. Can you elaborate? Thanks. Turnstep 13:25, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But if you had followed the "what links here" link, you would have seen that this article just survived an AFD with a "keep" vote, which at the least protects it from a speedy delete. Further, I think calling it a simple rephrasing of the title is a bit of a stretch - as you pointed out, it had two external links. A stub, yes, but hardly a CSD A3 candidate. Turnstep 14:12, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed this myself. Given the AFD, deletion isn't an option, it needs to be undeleted. A DRV takes more time then remaking the article (and causes needless arguing), but to me, the simple easy thing to do, is just for you to undelete it. --Rob 16:09, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think this refers to something fictional rather than nonsensical. Could you please let it run through AFD? - Mgm|(talk) 11:46, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Nevermind. I did a Google search and there's no publications in any credible magazines, books or anthologies. It just looks like a crackpot theory he's pushing. - Mgm|(talk) 11:53, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Erm, we seem to have crossed our edits somehow. I received that post of yours After I posted the nevermind thing... I'll put his stuff up for deletion. - Mgm|(talk) 11:56, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Georgia Tann[edit]

Just noticed you proposed my stub on Georgia Tann for deletion. Is she not a legitimate topic or did I just not provide enough info? I am doing research now to write a more indepth article on her and the Tennessee Children's Home Society. Couldn't find any articles specifically about that, just the ones on adoption and orphanages. It was a terrific scandal at the time and has affected thousands of people's lives, so I thought it was wikipedia-worthy. If not, no problem, I'm just curious to know the reason. Thanks. --Bluejay Young 12:27, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just received your message advising me what to do with this article; will do, and thanks. --Bluejay Young 12:52, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

please reconsider your vote on William Stephen Dare[edit]

There is apparently some confusion regarding his google test notability. He is written about mostly as "stephen dare". If you google check him this way you will see that there are actually multiple pages of listing and hundreds of articles and references. Thank you very much! I am working hard on this article, this guy is really an interesting and great addition. Carstenboswell.Carstenboswell 18:17, 5 April 2006 (UTC)carstenboswell[reply]

Did you know? {{prod}} can have a parameter.[edit]

Hello there. You have proposed the article Skits-o-phrenics for deletion without providing a reason why in the {{prod}} template. You may be interested to know that you can add your reasoning like that: {{prod|Add reason for deletion here}}. This will make your reasoning show up in the article's deletion notice. It will also aid other users in considering your suggestion on the Proposed Deletions log. See also: How to propose deletion of an article. Best, Sandstein 04:44, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2[edit]

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

New User[edit]

Dankie!

Yes, it's maybe a little late, but it does not matter, it is always very nice to be welcomed by someone! I noticed that you are a South African, and that great, because I am really interested in you're countries history and it's people. I would be very interested in having a chat about you're country and other things concidered. User:Dr.Poison

I understand, many users from al around the world, but don't worry about! You visited Sweden? Stockholm, maybe? I am propably going to visit SA in the future. As you maybe already I am very intrested in SA and it's past. I have writen some articles to Wikipedia about SA and some articles that are realeted to the subject of apartheid. I have also wrtiten a article about the afrikaners to the swedish wikipedia. How is it going in SA, by the way? Is the weather nice? We have snow and rain up here! Dr.Poison 10:53, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, Stockholm is clean and beatiful, and during the summer there is many events. We have three top soccer teams in Sthlm, so it's usually packed with soccerfans during the july. Is soccer a popular sport in SA? I know that many S-africans are rugby supporters, but howzit with soccer? When you say "ups and downs" what do you exactly mean with it? Because the only thing we in Europe know about SA is usually about apartheid or crime in SA, so I don't know if my picture of SA is maybe not real. Kind regard Dr.Poison 13:07, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I had a friend who visited SA (Tulbagh, near Cape Town) in 2000. One of the things that he told me was about the crimerate in SA and that it is not safe to walk freely in Cape Town and that it is best to always use you're car when going somewhere. Ive heard the same from other people visiting SA, but I'm not realy sure if I should belive in it? Is it realy so criminal that you can't walk on the streets in SA? The second thing that I am wondering about is how people feel about the "new South Africa"? I am wondering about this because I have heard that there is still many people who are not so happy with everything in SA. Dr.Poison 16:19, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Yes, I know that there is also places in Sweden I would not enter at night. But the reason I asked about it was that I did not know if I could belive in it. But now I know that it is only "turist talk" . And about my last question, there is of course many people who are dissatisfied with their countries. For example, we in Finland have a large unemployment (10%) so we have many people who are depressed. As You know my country was never apart of the Sovietunion, but we had a large business together and a large amout of or export went to USSR. So after the fall of USSR, we lost or tradingpartner and many people became unemployd. So in the begining of the 90's we had a unemployment rate of 20% maybe? So many are still covering from that. But back to you're country, that is far more intressting than mine ;) As you get many turists and visitors from european countries, and many of them are of course intressed about the past, or more exactly, Apartheid. Do white South Africans find it hard to talk about the past, as many of them where positive to apartheid? I would like to make it clear, my intention is not to hurt or bleame anybody with my questions. With kind regards from Sweden, Dr.Poison 12:55, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just make it clear... I am finnish but I am living in Sweden, so you know. At this time it is usual spring weather, about +10 celsius (don't know if you have celsius or farenheit in SA?) and sunny with clouds. How is it down there? Where in SA do you live? I live in Stockholm, or exactly in a suburb to Stockholm. Do you really mean that ex-national party ministers claim that they where not supporters of apartheid? Don't sounds a litle od . . .Can one say that Apartheid is viewed by whites as a system that was ment as a good thing but turned out bad? And I'm not sure if I am taking a step to long, but what was you're own view on apartheid (I'm not sure how old/young you are). . . I have a friend who is half South African. He lived in SA and fought in the border war in the 80's. He told me that people in SA are woried about what is going to happen. And that many farmers are woried about the governments view on Zimbabwe. If you want to have my email, I have a hotmail adress: superfinnen@hotmail.com Dr.Poison 19:49, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You! I will check it out as soon as possible. I have a small question about afrikaans, what does "Rhodesië gee oor" mean? I saw it in a movie called "A dry white season", in the scene a man read a newspaper called "Die Uitkyk". I understand it is something about Rhodesia, but I don't understand what gee oor means?. . . Dr.Poison 13:17, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you! I thought it was something like that! Yeah, I think it is a fake name. I don't know if you know the movie, but you maybe know the book writen by André Brink? Dr.Poison 14:41, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi! How is it going down there? Have watched any fotball yet? Have you had time to answer my email? I have started to play cricket up here, and it seems like a great game! Are you a fan of cricket? I saw SA win AUS in a fantastic game i March, won by one wicket if i remember right! The summer has finally arived up here, +30' and sunny! But soon it is going to rain... well, going to watch some fotball now! Dr.Poison 13:15, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article[edit]

As You maybe already have seen I have writen a article about the South African referendum, 1992. I was wondering if You would like to read it through and give you're thoughts about it? Dr.Poison 21:06, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.

A few features that you might find helpful:

  • Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
  • The announcement and open task box is updated quite regularly. You can watch it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WPMILHIST Announcements}} there.
  • Our project worklist contains some of the articles we're working on, together with a rating of their quality. It's not nearly complete, though, so please feel free to add any articles you work on if they aren't already listed there!

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the project coordinators, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Kirill Lokshin 12:55, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Admin[edit]

Baie dankie vir die gawe woorde; inderdaad is dit iets wat ek graag sou wou doen. Gee my asb. 'n paar dae om daaroor te dink (ek sien die reëls vir adminskap is tans nogal streng), en ek sal vir jou laat weet. Dankie, dewet| 15:43, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, ek't so effe hiervan vergeet ;) I will gladly accept your nomination. dewet| 09:47, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Dis 100% :) Ek's heeltemal rustig. dewet| 10:36, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I've filled it out and added it to WP:RFA. Nou's dit net duim vashou ;) dewet| 15:44, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nogal depressing sover. Lyk asof almal vashaak op iets wat eintlik klein is. Oh well. dewet| 17:24, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hierdie is maar vir my 'n geval van "you can't please all of them, all of the time". Miskien later weer. Vriendelike groete, dewet| 11:43, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3[edit]

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Barnstar[edit]

Many thanks for barnstar - very much appreciated! Zaian 10:10, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for making me a "Barn Star", but why "barn"?

PS, I just want to thank my family, as well as the Flying Spaghetti Monster for this honour!

Hi Elf-friend,

I do appreciate your support. There is so much to do on Wiki and so many examples of such good work that one can only but try.. Gregorydavid 09:39, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder...[edit]

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

Your vote on my RFA[edit]

Thank you for voting on my RFA, however I withdrew my nomination. I don't want people to have the impression that I'm not experienced enough, so I will nominate myself later once I'm more experienced. AECI[edit]

Hi there, I always thought AECI was originally AE&CI, not AE&I. Do you have a reference for AE&I? Zaian 21:47, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I wondered if it was a typo. You're right, it was AE&I until 1944, then AE&CI until 1976, and since then just AECI. Zaian 14:14, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some of me articles[edit]

hi! I don't really know but my South African referendum, 1992 article has been listed as a Articles with unsourced statements. I have put a scource to the discussion, put I don't really know if I have done something wrong or right? Then there is the article about the Conservative Party of South Africa, I wrote some new info there and I have a scource at the discusion page for the facts. If you could have a look at those two things and tell me if I have done something wrong... I am actually realy unsure if I have done something stupid or violated something... Dr.Poison 11:11, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I well take care of it soon! Did you have a look at the CP article? Dr.Poison 11:59, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Messages[edit]

Hi, could I ask you to stop leaving messages regarding Dewet's RFA? There are some editors that would consider that spam, and in any case solicitation like that is considered bad form by many editors. It's been known to blow up in peoples face before and rarely does any good. Thanks, Rx StrangeLove 06:36, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think if you've tracked RFA in the past you'll see that attempts to solicit votes or to "spam" user pages have drawn some fire. It's a touchy issue. Bottom line is that there was some complaining about the messages you were sending, and for good or ill they do affect RFA's. You may consider the reasons unfair and unsubstantiated but everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the last thing we need is to encourage a culture where challenging large numbers of votes (oppose or support) is accepted. How would you feel if someone contacted all the supporters and questioned their judgment? Anyway, I made the request and you can take what you think is useful from it. Speaking for myself, I don't agree that WP:BITE is not an issue in this case. Rx StrangeLove 04:04, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The South African Bush Telegraph[edit]

Hi Elf-friend, sorry about the above. There must be somehow we can contact other wikiusers that have common interests as ourselves. I am keen on knowning when other users that I have had alot of contact with are up for Admin or SA article up for vote ect. My thoughts are moving to some kind of mailing list that is controlled by a select few, for example yourself, Impi, Wizzy, Banes, PZFUN and me to name a few.

Anyway here is something of interest, the Africa Award has been proposed as an official award, we could sure use your input at the proposal page - Thank you! --Jcw69 08:10, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for butting in, but this discussion is relevant. dewet| 15:36, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; I've already started working on it ;) I assume we just move it from where its now to its final location when done, right? dewet| 06:48, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So, I think it should be un-speediable (!) in its current form. What do you think? dewet| 15:33, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I think we're done here ;) I just moved it anyway (while keeping a copy of the content), and it seems to have worked fine. The talk page wasn't moved (due to the existing one there), but there's nothing important there anyway. So both the temp redirect and temp talk page can be deleted now, I think. dewet| 07:46, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cassinga discussion[edit]

Hi, thanks for your replies on the Battle of Cassinga discussion page. It is unfortunately a very contentious matter, and there is no easy way to resolve it. That's partially why I focused mostly on the military aspect of the operation, thinking I would have time later to give greater coverage to the controversy and difference in opinion about the raid. Unfortunately, time hasn't been on my side of late. Anyway, I've left some comments on the talk page explaining my position, so I won't go into it now. Btw, how's the admin work going? — Impi 17:16, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Afrikaners[edit]

Dankie. -- Gemsbok1 13:46, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A short Esperanzial update[edit]

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Afrikaner[edit]

I read your comments on the Talk:Afrikaner page and wonder if you could help in a discussion surrounding a category (Category:Afrikaners) to which all pages for Afrikaans speaking people are now being added (unfairly in my opinion). I have had a discussion with the user on my talk page and I'm starting a discussion on one such affected page: Okkert Brits. Thanks. --Deon Steyn 09:22, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Dankie. -Gemsbok1 07:50, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Alouette III.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Alouette III.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 00:44, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of BattleMaster[edit]

I don't understand why the Battlemaster article was deleted with "unopposed for 5 days". It had been proposed for deletion in early 2006 and after extensive discussion, deletion was rejected. It appears the sole proponent of deletion back then simply proposed it again, hoping people wouldn't want to repeat the discussion - and succeeded. Please reconsider. The discussion might still be available. "unopposed" is most certainly untrue.

Image:Rooivalk RH Med.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Rooivalk RH Med.jpg.

Thank you. Anrie 15:27, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image source problem with Image:BJ Vorster.png[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:BJ Vorster.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:41, 9 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Anrie 06:41, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Pilatus Astra.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Pilatus Astra.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 04:23, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:EH101profile.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:EH101profile.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:19, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Cheetah C.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Cheetah C.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Image copyright problem with Image:Addo official guide.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Addo official guide.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello Elf-friend! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 5 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 1,141 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

The article List of Afrikaners has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Page obsolete given the existence of an equivalent category (Afrikaner people).

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. uKER (talk) 01:34, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of List of Afrikaners for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of Afrikaners is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Afrikaners until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. -- Selket Talk 23:18, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Suspension of admin privileges due to inactivity[edit]

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative privileges of users who have been inactive for one year, meaning administrators who have made neither any edits nor any logged actions in over one year. As a result of this discussion, your administrative privileges have been removed pending your return. If you wish to have these privileges reinstated, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Thank you for uploading File:South African Special Forces Brigade.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File permission problem with File:Hackle Cameron Highlanders of Canada.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Hackle Cameron Highlanders of Canada.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
