Re: File:License_plate_preamble.jpg[edit]
Hi Eje. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I merely photographed this art piece that was on public display at the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; I didn't make the display. I do happen to know, as a collector of license plates, though, that each of these plates was made by the respective state using official materials. Unfortunately, as for how the original artist acquired these plates that could be so conveniently arranged, I do not know the background story. But I do not think that the artist merely found plates that happened to fit into the pattern because some of them would not have been available to the general public (for example, the Georgia plate has 7 characters, including the space, whereas the general public would have been limited to 6 characters, and the Wyoming plate does not include the numerical county prefix that all genuine plates include). From the looks of the plates, I would estimate the piece to have been assembled in approximately 1989. Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use.
