Disambiguate BlackBerry Smartphones from BlackBerry Ltd[edit]

Hello, I manage BlackBerry's SEO programs and we are hoping to change the title of the BlackBerry page to BlackBerry Smartphones. We also want to change the title of BlackBerry Limited page to BlackBerry. The goal is to help the world understand that BlackBerry is the name of a company, not just the name of legacy product. We have tried to do this ourselves but it doesn't take. Any advice from you all? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kbryson-blackberry (talkcontribs) 19:29, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

BlackBerryBlackBerry Smartphones – We are hoping to change the title of the BlackBerry page to BlackBerry Smartphones. We also want to change the title of BlackBerry Limited page to BlackBerry. The goal is to help the world understand that BlackBerry is the name of a company, not just the name of legacy smartphone product.. Kbryson-blackberry (talk) 17:22, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose (some of the products have not been phones, and the uppercase "Smartphones" is awkward), but adding a parenthetical disambiguator might be reasonable. —BarrelProof (talk) 23:20, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose No real rationale provided to why this should be done. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 08:56, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rationale: The primary subject of the BlackBerry page is the line of smartphone devices and services formerly sold by BlackBerry Ltd. The term BlackBerry is the parent brand mark for all products and services sold by BlackBerry Ltd and more often refers to the company itself rather than solely the line of smartphone devices. As owners of the Trademark BlackBerry we are the appropriate authority to request the page be renamed as requested. We appreciate your support as we transition our business away from our legacy products. Kbryson-blackberry (talk) 20:23, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Virtually no one refers to these devices as "BlackBerry Smartphones", the WP:COMMONNAME is simply BlackBerry. I appreciate your branding concerns, but Wikipedia goes with the commonly used term over the official one, and trademark owners have no special say here. - MrOllie (talk) 20:57, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support but redirect BlackBerry to Blackberry (disambiguation). No clear WP:PTOPIC between the smartphone line and the company. "BlackBerry Smartphones" is not an especially common term, but it's acceptable under WP:NATURAL. feminist (talk) 04:19, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. Marketing request. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:34, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

About encryption history[edit]

I just found this history of why encryption has been added to BlackBerry devices:

Little known history: BlackBerry 'became encrypted' because back in the days when it was really just a 'pager with email' - North American carriers (channel partners) were actually reading BB executives emails during negotiations (!!!). BB discovered this and decided to start with the encryption. Seriously - the first 'illegal' act was by BB customers/channel partners!

Needs a more trustable source and a confirmation. -- Olivier Mengué |  13:44, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Needs a longer page name to distinguish a brand/product from 'Blackberry' fruit[edit]

This may be the most extreme example of the confusion that can be caused by case-sensitivity in page URLs.

These currently valid URLs are too confusingly similar:

The presence of the extra loop on the top of the capital 'B' at mid-word is easy to overlook. -72.71.132.119 (talk) 21:22, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 27 January 2020[edit]

BlackBerryBlackBerry (devices) – At this point, there is no WP:PTOPIC for "BlackBerry" between the line of smartphones known as BlackBerry, and the company BlackBerry Limited which was formerly known as Research in Motion. Prior to 2013, usage was clear: "BlackBerry" referred to the line of smartphones, while "RIM" referred to the company behind them. RIM's 2013 decision to rebrand as "BlackBerry" has created confusion: now "BlackBerry" can equally refer to the line of smartphones or the company. The existing title should redirect to Blackberry (disambiguation). feminist (talk) 13:19, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 14:44, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • See also previous discussion. --Izno (talk) 17:15, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Even 7 years later, people still think of the device when you say "BlackBerry". Rarely is the company that makes the device ever the topic of discussion. Axem Titanium (talk) 22:46, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Axem Titanium: Based on a Google News search for "blackberry", almost all results are about the company. Few are about the phones. feminist (talk) 07:34, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Google News != usage in daily life. BlackBerry is still synonymous with PDA. There's obviously no way to prove or disprove that; it's just my feeling and the basis for my position. Axem Titanium (talk) 22:38, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - The company itself only recently (in relative terms) was renamed from RIM to BlackBerry Limited; given the nature of the firm's decline, the primary topic must surely still be the phone line itself for the name BlackBerry. Indeed, many people probably aren't even aware that it WAS renamed. Also, is (devices) even consistent with the naming conventions? (I recognise this is the first post from this IP - I am a retired editor) 2A00:23C5:EE95:4D00:6D6A:3F6D:7BC0:1698 (talk) 21:56, 29 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. Quahog (talkcontribs) 23:00, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Quahog, COMMONNAME has never been the concern. The issue is with disambiguation, the issue when you have two topics which have the same most commonly used name. feminist (talk) 14:34, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
