Widely available only in recent years?[edit]

Dear all, I removed the claim that Lawes' music has only become widely available in recent years. Even though I felt the same about it, after research, it appears not to be true. This | Discogs page in fact shows 50 recordings with William Lawes' music included, almost perfectly distributed over time since 1957. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MeesterDaan (talkcontribs) 03:36, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dodgy claims:[edit]

Was he born on May 1, or baptised on that day?

How well did he know Charles I?

Was he killed on September 24th at Rowton Heath, or was he killed in the days surrounding it (i.e at the siege of Chester generally)?

Discography needs to be checked for the performer's precedence.

And just how bizarre and spine-tingling do we consider him these days? Expert advice is required...

If there are any viol-players out there, at the end of 2004, who've played this music and don't find those adjectives perfectly descriptive and current, let them speak out.

Dodgy Facts[edit]

It says Charles was Prince of Wales.... isn't Henry the Prince of Wales as the 1st born and Charles Duke of Clarence? MartinY (talk) 09:09, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Confirmed date of baptism as May 1st, date of death as September 24.

I believe he was Lutenist in Charles' court, and as such would have travelled with him, and I have heard that they were fairly intimate. Sadly, I have no good source on this (Grove doesn't speak to it). His work was certainly very effective and very spine-tingling, especially when compared with his contemporaries such as his brother, Coprario, etc.Makemi 05:37, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Chestertouristcom 05:21, Jan 06, 2007 (GMT) He was shot and killed at the Battle Rowton Moor on the 24th of September 1645.
