Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shaheen Lakhan (2nd nomination)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Update: I count 9 to delete, 1 ordinary user to keep, and 1 sock puppet to keep. I'll now delete the page. Wile E. Heresiarch 01:53, 26 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

From Cleanup: Shaheen Lakhan was listed on vfd in February (debate) votes were 6-3 in favour of deletion with some advocating it be placed on cleanup. It has now been on cleanup for three months with no improvement. - SimonP 22:11, May 20, 2004 (UTC)

  • Comment. FWIW, user seems to be using WP as a Web hosting service: His Harvard page[1] links to [[2]] if you click the More link under About My Research. Also, only 190 hits, most of which seem to be mirrored from a Looksmart web directory. Niteowlneils 23:24, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
  • The page was obviously created by the subject's sock puppets. Delete this autobiography by a too obscure subject. --Jiang 01:07, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Does not appear obscure at all. Everyking 01:48, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
  • Barely shows up on Google. Article reads like self-promotion. If cleanup hasn't done anything to it in 3 months, I don't think it's likely to improve. Delete. -- Cyrius|&#9998 02:23, May 21, 2004 (UTC)
    • Barely shows up? How many Google hits does a person need to get by your standards? And anyway, it looks like an all right stub to me. Everyking 02:59, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
      • Well, I only see a handful, once you filter out wikipedia clones. -- Cyrius|&#9998 03:15, May 21, 2004 (UTC)
        • This debate has me totally baffled. I found more than 20 hits for his full name, Shaheen Emmanuel Lakhan, only one of which was from a Wikipedia clone. Everyking 14:27, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
        • You are correct. In fact, if you follow the google link, he has many more original pages, wiki being a minority. --Kuhn3 16:47, 22 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
          • I think if you look more closely at those hits, you'll find there's not much to this guy. Of the top five hits for "Shaheen Emmanuel Lakhan" on Google, four are stuff that he's written about himself, and one is a reference to his sole peer reviewed publication. The only person who finds him notable is himself. -- BTW the number of Google hits alone can't be a deciding factor; my name gets about 1000, and I'm certainly nobody in particular. Regards, Wile E. Heresiarch 15:28, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
    • I get ten hits, and more publications, and I'm really nobody. DJ Clayworth 19:47, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Self promotion. User:Slakhan has been littering various articles with his name, like, oh, intellectual property education. Wikipedia, mirrors, Looksmart & the like rise to the top of the Google heap -- not a good sign for a supposed big wheel in academia. To top it off, using WP as a free hosting service. Sheesh. Sorry dude, we're building an encyclopedia. Delete Shaheen Lakhan, and delete User:Slakhan as a violation of the no-free-hosting policy. Clean up remaining links at leisure. Wile E. • I was digging a bit more. I have to say this guy has very successfully created a Potemkin village of web pages and cross references. However: (1) the only thing that BIDMC Genomics Center knows about him is that he works in somebody's lab [3]; the most important person on that list is the PI at the top, and it's not Lakhan. (2) His USCD appointment is to be an instructor (not professor) for a non-technical course [4]. (3) He's not on the faculty/staff list at Miramar College [5]. (4) Foundation College is an online adult education provider; I can't find a Foundation College of Animal Sciences nor a Glory College at all. (5) Of the four papers cited at the bottom of Shaheen Lakhan, one is from a peer-reviewed journal, two are from Cogprints, an unreviewed archive, and one is from About.com. This is simply unremarkable and not notable in any way. -- Some anonymous commentator left some very telling remarks on talk:Shaheen Lakhan. All I can say is I can't agree more. Wile E. • Do we need this discussion on every vanity article created by a signed-inuser? A user cannot create an article about themself. Delete. RickK 03:50, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
  • It'd be nice if he could sum up the impact his ideas have had in any of those fields. As is, delete. Meelar 04:04, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. DJ Clayworth 19:47, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, vanity. Side remark: this is the first time I've seen a person who claims he maintains appointments as professor, instructor and assistant instructor at the same time. Andris 01:26, May 22, 2004 (UTC)
    • You don't seem to be an academician, people may hold various appointments at different institutions. --Kuhn3 16:47, 22 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Does not appear obscure at all. The original vote turned out to keep the page, so is this an anti-Wiki recall? Guess so. --Kuhn3 16:47, 22 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
    • same sock puppet as before. Happens not to post until Shaheen Lakhan get put on vfd. --Jiang
  • Delete. Information not verifiable. The article leads off by saying "Shaheen Emmanuel Lakhan is affiliated with Harvard University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences. I went to http://www.harvard.edu/directories/ to determine the nature of that "affiliation. I tried all three directory links listed there: Harvard University Telephone and Address Directory--faculty, staff, and students; Harvard Directory: people not affiliated with the Harvard Medical School, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and the teaching hospitals; Harvard Medical School White Pages:faculty, staff, and students associated with the Faculty of Medicine and the teaching hospitals. He's not listed in any of them. It gets weirder and weirder. His fas website, http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~slakhan/ gives his contact information as lakhan@fas.harvard.edu, 4 Blackfan Circle, Room 208 Boston, MA 02115-5713 Phone/Fax (909) 498-8657 -- but area code 909 is in the Los Angeles, California region. I can't guess whether he has any connection with the Harvard employee listed as "Sandy" Lakhan, an "LHT Employee" in the medical school's Department of Diversity and Community Partnership Dpbsmith 01:45, 25 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
