Regarding the dots in the name[edit]

Genesis' webpage as well as Amazon has it listed without the dots, which obviously means that's the official title, so I reverted the previous move. Erzsébet Báthory(talk|contr.) 15:59, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't agree. Just because the ellipses at the beginning and end of the title don't appear in the Amazon listing, it doesn't mean they're not a part of the title. Granted, an ellipsis is to some degree extraneous punctuation, so I can see why it would be viewed as not part of the official title. I just wanted to make the point that Amazon isn't the be-all and end-all with regard to album titles. I'd defer to the record companies in that area, and even they sometimes do things for the sake of convenience that may be contrary to the artist's intentions. Since an ellipsis isn't pronounced, we wouldn't be able to discern from artist interviews whether they would consider them to be part of the title, so I guess we're left to press materials, etc. as the definitive authority. Personally, I think they should be included when the title is written, unless it's somehow awkward to do so. I'd imagine that a website listing like the Amazon page would be one of those times, but I wouldn't follow it as a style template. MaxVolume (talk) 16:31, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See the first link I linked, Genesis official webpage. The dots are not part of the name there either, nor did they use it in prose here. Thanks. Erzsébet Báthory(talk|contr.) 17:01, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not necessarily debating whether the ellipses should be there or not, just that a listing on Amazon or any other vendor's website isn't a reliable style guide. As for the official site, any Genesis fan knows how many typos have been found there recently, so obviously the connection with the band is tenuous at best, and they apparently have minimal or no oversight with regard to press releases and the like. I do think that the link you provided seems to be one of those cases where it would have been awkward to include them, but again my beef isn't with their inclusion or omission, just with counting on Amazon as any kind of authority on the proper presentation of album names.
