Bashir's Ethnicity?[edit]

I was just wondering what Ethnicity or Nationality Julian Bashir was supposed to be in the series? Alexander Siddig is of Sudanese Arab ethnicity (I think), and the name Bashir does sound Arab, so is he supposed to be Arab? Also in that disambiguation page the other people with the name Bashir are from all over the Islamic world, so I assume it's a fairly common Muslim name. Also I wonder if the character was supposed to be a Muslim? (It says in Siddig's page that he is a Muslim so maybe...) --Hibernian 23:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is no solid indication that any Abrahamic religion exists in the Star Trek Universe. There was a chapel in the original series, but what religion or philosophy it served is never mentioned. As far as I know the only large-scale human religions confirmed to exist in the series are Hinduism and perhaps Shinto. (Hinduism is briefly mentioned as existing in Data's Day, Shintoism is alluded to in the wedding ceremony of the same episode) Although kiva religion, or something like it, is shown in Journey's End (Star Trek: The Next Generation). American Indian religion also occurs in Voyager. Otherwise human religions seem to be extinct or not discussed.--T. Anthony (talk) 19:23, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Should he be listed as a fictional Arab character at all if it is not indicated in canon or even non-cannonical sources? I believe going by the name is not enough, since I recall his character was not intended to be defined in any particular ethnic group. He speaks with an English acent, and English dialect, he is the only one who uses terms like "trousers" insead of "pants", and "Herbs" insted of "'erbs". I deleted a trivia blurb that said Bashir's enhancements were like those from Gundam SEED; but, many genetically engineered characters in all sorts of science fiction have similar enhanced abilities.
