Untitled[edit]

An admin needs to fix the link on the page -- it currently reads GFDL.

Format it like this: GFDL or GFDL.

[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GNU_Free_Documentation_License GFDL]

or

[[Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GNU_Free_Documentation_License|GFDL]]

The motives for the creation of this was to remove the need for any kind of wikipedia:terms of use - the thinking being that merely reading the encyclopedia should not have terms of use. I don't object to that.

The initial version was somewhat longer. However, it was considered more legally scary, so a shorter version was found. It mentions the name of the law (section 108) to remove ambiguity, and because we trust Alex756's judgement. The law required a "possibly copyrighted" notice, so we put that in too.

See also Wikipedia talk:Copyright violations on history pages.

Can somebody please remove the extraneous from this message? It makes the view and edit pages of old versions of articles invalid, which breaks Sam Hocevar's very useful godmode-light script [1]. — Bcat (talkemail) 16:24, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

GFDL[edit]

I think we should incorporate the text of MediaWiki:Copyright here. Most importantly, the GFDL requires a notice that the material is under that license, even on these archived pages. I realize this is somewhat contradictory to the warning that material may infringe third-party copyright. I'm also wondering why the reference to section 108 was removed. Thus, I was thinking of something like this:

This version of the page has been revised.
Besides normal editing, the reason for revision may have been that this version contains
factual inaccuracies or vandalism. Also, it may include material incompatible with the GFDL, which is reproduced solely under the Section 108 archival exemption. Subject to that exception, all text authored by Wikipedia contributors is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. I've fixed the link that wasn't working. Apart from that, can you be more specific about what you want changed? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:11, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Also, Martin, Wikitext doesn't work in this message (anymore?), so I placed absolute links to the (unsecure) pages. Amalthea 16:50, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
