Current introduction[edit]

Dark Tranquillity has definitely changed their sound since their debut studio album, in fact nearly every album was remarkably different. The Minds I was raw whereas The Gallery was polished, Projector was soft and fuzzy with more clean vocals than on any other album, then they went synth and then they blended it all together. To say, as it is written now, that the band hasn't changed their sound since the beginning is absurd. Also absurd is saying that Skydancer was more death metal than melodic metal. Are you talking about the Skydancer that is almost 100% melodic guitar riffs whenever it is not acoustic and also is full of clean vocals and female vocals? Separate discography? much like the in flames entry, this should probably receive the same treatment, it's really beefy and could shorten down the wiki for the band itself considerably, who else thinks so?Shatterzer0 08:04, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
Normally separate discographies are created when an article is too long. This article as of now barely has a bio section, when an article is too long it will say so in the edit window and recommend that the article be "split". This article is not yet long enough and the In Flames article wasn't long enough for it to be split either, but at least that article was somewhat long and is going to get longer really soon. --Leon Sword 01:29, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No black metal or what so ever. Actually I'm bad in the english, that sorry for my english, but still Dark Tranquillity were NEVER black, if you mean that, they had influenced by the Darkthrone. Dark Tranquillity are just straight melodic death metal, not anything kind of black.

Name[edit]

Genre[edit]

I think ,that dark tranquillity can be considered also Symphonic death metal. Im not sure. But they had some strong symphonic elements. Can dark tranquillity considered also symphonic death metal. No, symphonic metal and all its subgenres all have one thing in common, they all have elements that sound similar to a classical symphony. Granted Dark Tranquillity's music is very atmospheric and some songs contain prominent piano parts but I have yet to hear of the band using cellos, flutes, or violins as prominent instruments. Just because the band features piano and keyboards doesn't mean they are a symphonic metal band, piano and keyboards are common instruments in a variety of other genres too. --Leon Sword 00:19, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not-Death albums[edit]

There are Swedish bands (i.e. In Flames, Soilwork, Katatonia etc.) that changed their genre in some albums and this brought discussion and debate. I think that the same should be done for DT albums like Projector or (particularly) Haven, that don't sound like any other death metal albums (especially Haven) even compared to old DT albums. Maybe we could label them simply as metal, or heavy metal with electronics and keyboards. What do you think about? 87.20.189.133 (talk) 16:14, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Although they may have changed, this is their brand of melodic death at maybe one of its softer forms. Some bands may be more "deathy" than other bands but they are still labeled melodic death because of their melodic guitars and less extreme nature than true death metal. OK, I don't know ,much of Dark Tranquillity, In Flames or Soilwork, but Katatonia NEVER have been in NO WAY melodic death metal. They started as a DOOM METAL band now are playing soft-doom metal. --Replynka

Where Death Is Most Alive (DVD, 2009, Century Media)[edit]

After a lot of work, we're proud to announce that the "Where Death Is Most Alive" DVD will see the light of day on October 26th, 2009 in Europe and November 17th, 2009 in North America via Century Media Records. This little baby took quite some time to deliver, but when you'll see the scope and quality of the material, you'll understand why it wasn't done over a fortnight.

Our first official DVD, "Live damage" (2002), was OK for its time, but hardly spectacular, so this time we wanted to make sure that we could offer people something more substantial that would live up to the high expectations. For the main feature, we had our headline show in Milano last October professionally documented by Finnish production company Vasara Films. As expected, they did a stellar job with both the filming and editing and really managed to capture the vibe of the evening. Italy is home to some of the most devoted and enthusiastic D.T. fans on earth, something which is very obvious from the footage. The show is the longest one in D.T. history (and one of the very last concerts held at the legendary Rolling Stone club), and features a guest performance by Nell Sigland on "The Mundane and the Magic" and "Insanity's crescendo". For the mixing, we once again let Tue Madsen work his magic at his Antfarm Studios in Denmark, and the result is simply amazing.

In addition to that, Village Road films have put together "Out Of Nothing", a true stroll-down-memory-lane documentary about the band. All current members as well as Michael Nicklasson (ex-bass) and Fredrik Johansson (ex-guitar) are interviewed, and a host of people from the early Gothenburg scene share their anecdotes and memories. Among others, Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates, Grotesque etc), Anders Iwers (Tiamat, Ceremonial Oath) and Fredrik Nordström (Studio Fredman) appear in the film, which spans for approx. 47 minutes.

The DVD will also mark the premiere of the "Misery's Crown" promo video, shot earlier this year by Roger Johansson and Vasara Films. All our other promo clips from recent years are featured as well.

Furthermore, we undertook some extensive detective research, raiding our old homes to dig up long forgotten VHS tapes from the archives. A surprisingly large amount of footage was found, most of which never even got spread through the tape trading network at the time. In total, the "Live Archive" portion of the DVD features 21 tracks with a strong emphasis on old ("Skydancer" and earlier) material including some real rarities. Most of these songs were only performed live a handful of times, as shows weren't that frequent back then. Two of them ("Soulbreed" and "The Dying Fragment Of An Elderly Dream") are actually the only D.T. songs that were 100% completed but never recorded properly in studio. Both were written in the autumn of 1991.

To conclude - we're damn proud of this release, and more than sure that it will satisfy the high expectations of both old and new fans alike. Here's to the next 20 years!

Deathcore?[edit]

Found out that someone wrote about them as a pioneering deathcore band. Found it ridiculous and removed it. But of course, I might have listened to the wrong Dark Tranquillity all along and the real one might sound just like Bring Me the Horizon or something. Someone had edited the entire page, filling it with incorrect facts stating that Dark Tranquillity is a metalcore band. While melodic death metal in general have been a great influence on metalcore, it is important to remember that the only similarites Dark Tranquillity have with bands such as All That Remains and Killswitch Engage is the pedal point riff style - the metalcore bands differs in vocal delivery, punkier approach, and simpler and more straightforward song structures, while melodic death metal is usally a lot more experimental with song structure, more dynamic, harsher vocals, no punk influences and a darker atmosphere. A Closer End 2008[edit]

I've seen it all over the interwebs, in many, many torrents and wondered if it should be mentioned in the article. (URL redirects to a porn site) seems to explain it. It took me sometime to figure out it wasn't an official album... does it warrant a mention?

Objectivity and Citations[edit]

As others have mentioned, at times this reads more like a fan page than an encyclopedia entry. I have changed some phrasing to be more neutral, but I am still working on the article, so I have left most of the original content and will go back over it once I also have some more sources. I have added a whole lot of Citation Needed tags, partly to remind myself to find relevant articles to cite, and partly in the hope that other DT enthusiasts will take on the challenge. :) GlendaJanssen (talk) 21:17, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
